Does anyone know how they made the #22 on the side of that car such a shiney gold? It looks like chrome only it's gold.

Ok, maybe it was Dick Brooks. Either way, about those numbers...

O/T alert:   What's up with the "305 C.I." on Dick Brooks' hood?  Why not 426 C.I. like Boby Allison's?

The winged cars were restricted to small blocks after the 70 season.I don't recall the exact cube limit.

I have seen Bobby Allisons name on both the #12 car,and the #22  Daytonas. The 305 cubic inch limit was imposed on all aero cars in 1971. The 305 trans am engine was placed in the #22 Mario Rossi prepped Daytona, and I beleive it was the only wingcar to win a race with the 305 inch engine! Richard brooks was driving it when the victory occured!

Mike DC

It was a 305 C.I. limiit.  So when NASCAR kicked the Hemis out of their wing cars, the racers basically put a 305 Trans Am series motor in it for a while to see how it would do.

But the writing was on the wall about NASCAR's opinion.  I remember reading some old racer's comment about the 305 Daytona: "If that car woulda actually won some races & caught on, NASCAR probably would have turned around & stuck a 105-inch limit on it!  They wanted the Daytonas taken off the tracks, pure & simple."

----------------------------------

That top 1970 racer (#12) is cool.  The 500/Daytonas always get so much press that it's actually kinda rare to see footage of a regular rear window 2nd-gen Charger on the oval tracks now.  History is preoccupied with the wings.

Wow!  I had no idea about the 305 thing.  What did they do, sleeve a 318...bore out a 273?

Late 60's Indy/ ISAC, stroked 318  w/ Keith Black reworked T/A crank= 305 cid, engine in  single 4 bbl would make 500-550 real horse, in F.I. form would make 800 horse.........the wingcars were not wanted by the oppersistion, so forceing any team that wanted to run them in 70, they were limited to 5 litres (305 ci) by NASCAR, well even with 305 cubes running against 430 cid chevys, 429 Fords, 426 hemis, these cars still kicked ass!........................why do you think the 71 wingcars didn't make it!................305 or not!, 3 years running on a 71 platform, would allow running that body into the 73 season!, against what,.............torinos,lagunas,cutlass's............they couldn't stand to see Mopar dominate NASCAR from 69-73......or more!

 :iagree:
this is the exact reason the 305 was mandated if you ran an aero car
Mopar is always banned in the rule books to level the playing feild

Any idea who owns this #22 Daytona clone car?  (not the one that looks like a 4x4!)
This one was built by Pat McKinney and his brother, many years ago.

Some nice Birds in the pic!
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Aero426

Now up in Canada, I believe.

Just to recap, there are four different #22 Daytonas out there now:

The Pat McKinney built car shown here
The 4 x 4 looking vintage race car tribute
The Tim Walker built #22 tribute car
The Bill Rossi car (still under construction)

the 22 is probably gold leaf

Gold leaf would have a texture because of it's nature/application, the 22 decals would best be cut from chrome gold craft adhesive vinyl sheet for that smooth polished metal look
