Always reading "muscle" car books... One mentioned the Hemi weight as excessive...

Carb(s) to oil pan:
  440+6 weight?
  Hemi?

Just as an aside to the monster motors:
  340+6 weight?
1973 Charger : 440cid - 727 - 8.75/3.55

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
      a liberal, oh fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
acceptable, respectable, oh presentable, a vegetable!

OEM Mopar Engine Weights
Here's a small list of [approximate] weights for stock engines.
Note most of these are fully dressed engines with stock parts.
We all know the savings to be had with aluminum intakes, ect...

331/354 Hemi with alum. intake and water pump - 504
392 Hemi with alum. intake and water pump ------ 564
Slant 6 --------------------------------------------- 525
273-340 -------------------------------------------  525
360-------------------------------------------------  560
361-400 -------------------------------------------  620
413-440 -------------------------------------------  670
426 Street Hemi ----------------------------------- 765

From personal experience (as reported by the engine builder):

my 426 Street Hemi weighed in at 843 before the modifications began (it's not called the Elephant for nothing). When finished at 505 ci, with every piece of aluminum and alloys that could be used in and on the original cast iron block, it weighs 610 pounds.

Now where do they square up in pounds per hp?

bobs66440

It's amazing that the slant-6 weighs that much...

I agree that surprises me I have had /6s, small block,B and RBs. I would have not thought the /6 was that heavy I guess it is long and tall if you straightened it up.

A buddy of mine bought a 64 Dart several years ago and the slant was sitting next to it, all rebuilt and painted, very pretty.  We figured we'd lift it in the back of the van real quick.  Yeah that didn't happen....
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

In factory advertised power?  440 six pack is better than a Hemi and a 340 six pack and 440 4bbl are equal. In reality, its all over the place.

Yes I have heard that a 440 4v is faster than a 426 Hemi stop light to stop light but not in the 1/4.

Right! That was my first thought.
Any idea what the early aluminum /6's weigh in at?
I may be schizophrenic but at least I have us!

Same gear ratio - Both tuned to the max - stoplight to stoplight

440-6 auto - win

Stick - Hemi - Win

Close in both scenarios

I can't believe a gen-II Hemi weighs 843 pounds.

The block is 240 tops.  The heads are maybe 50 pounds each.  The crank is 80 lbs.  I don't know about the I & E manifolds but they're probably not more than another 60-80 pounds total.  Let's say 20 pounds for some carbs . . . that is all the big pieces of the motor and it's only up to a little over 500 pounds so far.  I'm sure the small stuff adds a bunch more weight in total, but is it really 340 more pounds?

Welcome and congrats on getting your dream car. It's not a 70, but that's OK, it's still cool.   :icon_smile_big:
