What's the indentation on the rear panel on the C500 for?

Looking at that blue hemi c500 on Ebay again and saw the rear panel has a kind of rectangular "indentation" and some holes.
The holes are maybe for rubber bumpers for the bottom of the license plate, but what about the indentation?

I never really thought about why its there, but its not 500 specific, on all 68-70 Chargers.... :shruggy:

maybe add strength , when the holes were being punched  ,  extra strengh when the licence plate is attached   :scratchchin: :shruggy:

Not disagreeing with you but then why don't all Mopar tail panels from that era have them?

Perhaps it's for license plate drainage  :smilielol:

Nost Mopars of that era didnt have a rear valance either most had a bumper all the way down.


I agee with the strength adding opinion.
68 Charger R/t white with black v/t and red tailstripe. 440 4 speed ,black interior
68 383 auto with a/c and power windows. Now 440 4 speed jj1 gold black interior .
My Charger is a hybrid car, it burns gas and rubber............

When the parts were removed from the stamping press, they would be stacked up and "stick" together during shipment to the assembly plant. Being a long narrow part it would likely bend (causing damage) in the middle when removed from the stack before being installed on the vehicle.
