Glove box locked

I locked my glove box a few years ago, I was curious if the key matched.  It worked, I locked and unlocked it a couple times; then I couldn't get it to unlock.  It's been that way ever since, every time I get in the car, I try and unlock it, but no luck.  Does anyone have a suggestion on how to unlock it?  Should I just try graphite or a dry lubricant, or has anyone else figured anything out with these old cars?  I don't want to break anything, but it'd be nice to be able to use the glove box.

My glovebox lock wouldn't open again yesterday.  It's happened before, and I've given it a shot of graphite, which helps for a while.  I have a can of WD40 that has a small red tube attached to the spray head.  I inserted it into the key slot and gave it a small squirt.  Then I inserted the key and worked it in and out.  The lock opened, but still didn't work smoothly.  With the glovebox open I pushed in on the small latch on the lock and gave it a small squirt of WD40.  I reinserted the key and worked the lock open and closed several times until it worked smoothly.  I know that graphite is recommended, but my lock is working well now.  Hopefully it will continue that way.

The glove box was closed when I was cycling the key.  It no longer turns.

I'll get some graphite, and try that. I was a little wary of WD-40 because it's not recommended for locks as it can attract dust.

Gold Rush

Pick up a can of Liquid Wrench spray silicone.  It does not attract dust and is an excellent lubricant.

oh right closed,
just for curiosity sake i would  try  with fingers or carefully with  a sutible tool  try levering a little  or rocking by putting something under the bottem edge of the glove box door & dash frame  ( dont know the correct word for this action should be  :slap:   / pressing door  in & out \a little while opperating the key ,  i'm not very good at explaining this  .......anyway its  like you would to test to see if any door is locked etc but turning a key gently at same time ,
the glove box latch/ striker on dash frame might be out of adjustment  ... to far in or out putting pressure on lock so difficult / wont turn ...... just an idea  :scratchchin:  after ive typed all this prolly  seized & just wants some lubrication

Thank you tan top!  I wasn't able to cycle the lock, but the door did pop open,  I can now fix or replace the lock/latch.

Which way is the key supposed to turn to unlock?   Also, is the button supposed to be compressed while locked?  Wondering it the assembly failed.

thats good you got it open  :yesnod: :2thumbs:

the button stays out all the time,
just press it in to open door,
to lock glove box turn key clockwise to 3 oclock,
to unlock counter clockwise ,  & the key returns to the 12 oclock position ,

what type of latch / striker have you got on the dash frame ?  is it the cast base & spring loaded bar  or bent wire  type ?

I'm guessing this is the bent wire type?

I found another button/lock assembly that matches my key, thanks for your help.

thatsa good you got it sorted  :2thumbs:
yes wire type,

not sure if i'm remembering this correctally but think the bent wire type was the  superseded part to replace the  cast base spring loaded bar type , see picture below , to stop the glove box popping open at random times by its self , i might have this round the wrong way though :shruggy:
