What is the best way to clean the contact and coil in a '69 headlamp rheostat? Mine has become a little finicky and only wants to work at certain points on the rheostat.

I have very lightly sanded the contact with 800 grit paper. You can also have the paper facing the coil side, hold it between the contact and coil, and rotate the dial. Just be gentle.
