Another upper door pad medallion thread (with early 68 caveat)

I've been thinking of getting some new upper door pad medallions but I've run into an issue as usual. In the reproduction realm there seems to be three different kinds of paint schemes. Red only around the outside, red with black Charger script and red with black script and inner circle. Which one is correct?

Now, before you answer that, there is evidence that the early 68s came with red white and blue around the outer ring. So when did this patriotic paint scheme come to an end and did they have black script and inner circle on those or not?

The last three pics are from Megaparts and BE&A, the first is from the site.

there was a thread on this very subject some time ago , just done a search but cant find it as of yet !   the red blue & white medallions  were found on very early build 68 chargers , (( 67 built as far as I know )) i'm far from an expert , but  from what ive seen if the car is original and has a   red , blue , white medallion , its normally got the chrome square buttons on the map pockets too .  as well as the skeleton frame deck lid & extra tail lamp panel supports .

as for the charger script in black , think they were all picked out in black may be   :scratchchin: :shruggy:  use to think they were just a plain silver disc though at one time  :scratchchin: , mine were when I got it 24 years ago , but could of easily wore off I suppose  :shruggy:
if you watch the car chase in bullet  the charger scripts  look like they are picked out in black I think or could be shadow , same as in dirty mary crazy larry , look black , will have to look later & double check   :P :scratchchin:

like I say i'm no expert  :popcrn:

The previous thread I saw (pic with red pad) showed red white and blue on a Sept. 67 build car but I haven't heard much about when that ended exactly. None of this stuff seems to be exact anyway. My car was finished in early January so I'll have to assume it had red ones. :shruggy:

The medallion I posted above in the black pad came with my car but that pad was previously white so I know it's not original to my black interior car. The pad is torn up so I won't be using it anyway. The other side had a pad that was originally black with a red medallion so I tend to believe it's stock.

So according to the movies you think it was just the script itself that was black or the script AND the inner circle?

well  cant remember ever seeing a clear shot of one in magazine road test articles  back in the day ,      the chargers from back in the day movies ,  pretty sure charger script  was in black , will have a looking  into it the weekend ,  take some screen shots , & anything else relevant I can find

Here's another abiguity to toss into the mix. I went back to look at the Megaparts site and found that they list the blank medallion (pic 2) as a 68/69 scheme and a second medallion (pic 3) as being for a 70. :rotz: He said that's stock according to his supplier.

The BE&A medallion (pic 4) is listed as 68-70.

When things start getting this convoluted I tend to stop caring.

nothing is ever straight forward  :-\
:scratchchin: see I always thought they were like the first  picture below , even when I was a kid & went to car shows & drag strip  with my Dad in the early 80s , I must of been 12 , can remember every second generation charger I looked in , had just the plain medallion like below , & any other I saw in magazines were the same ,  watching DMCL & bullet back then before DVD , picture quality wernt good & trying to pause to look at stuff , like I did even back then  , was next to useless really to see detail , when I  got mine  24 years ago , the upper door pad medallions , were like the first picture below too , it was only after watching DMCL & bullet on a DVD with the good sharp picture quality & freeze framing , saw they were like the second picture below , with just the charger script picked out in black  :scratchchin: , when I looked at the door pad medallion closely on mine   , found  no traces of black on it , :scratchchin:  could easily wore off I suppose as every charger I had seen ,  did not have a black charger script , except in the back in the day movies . I then looked closely at the old charger ads I had in various books  , although in black & white , you can see the charger script in black like , also can see a couple with the red blue white medallion too with a black charger script ,
never even knew about the red blue white medallion till a few years back after a thread on here  :coolgleamA:.

Thanks! I'm finding it difficult to focus on the medallion in that first pic.

Help me out with what I'm seeing. Near as I can tell it looks like the script is black but not the inner circle on both cars. Now I wonder if the DMCL interior is the 68 or 69? :shruggy: What's strange is I can't even see the red outer circle on the Bullitt car.

yep no black inner circle  , that's what I see too , no  red outer circle on the bullitt car either by the looks of it now you mention it  although looks a bit of red on the bottom of the  medallion  in the last picture below  :popcrn:    :scratchchin:  :shruggy:

A 1968 I parted out had these red white and blue style. It also had the chrome squares on the ends of the map pocket. I still have some of the interior, I will find a date on some of the panels. From what I recall, it was very early.

Has anyone watched Bullitt lately to see what those cars had?  It'd be definite proof of what was available.  They only used 68's in the movie.  DMCL had a combination of years.

Was Bullitt filmed in early fall of 1967? If any later, you are dealing with cars possibly made post change.

Imdb.com says it was released on Oct. 17, 1968. Just the 10-minute chase scene took three weeks to film. It's difficult to say for sure how long the entire shoot lasted but if you consider the time spent on filming, editing, promotion, etc. it's very likely the car was an early one.

For what it's worth my 70 (Early build) has all red border and Charger script is not black.

All photographs behind the scenes are from 1968. There is even one that shows an April 1968 newspaper in a rack. Even if the car chase was done before that, it was still likely in 1968.

Hey Bull this may help. My SPD was 1-18-68. My medallions are red circle and NO black script or inner circle. I held a light (shown in pic 2) to show evidence of no shadowing to see that there is NO black at all. I really do believe that these are original to my car and that the there was no rubbing off any would be black highlighting.

You're right this phase is a nightmare for correct restoration!

Dino

I'll see if I can find a pic of my old 68 but I'm pretty sure mine were like VegasCharger's.

Unless that black paint just fell off I tend to agree on the script and inner circle. How much rubbing could their have been with the medallion being recessed inside the pad like it is? But then they did still manage to get dinged up so...

Spekaing of that, does anyone know if that inner stick on center piece is still available? Seems like Charger Specialties has/had them for sale at one point. Are they just glued in?

Brock Lee

Not sure if they are still available. They are indeed glued in with some sort of transparent rubber adhesive. Warm them up a little and it almost falls off. I believe there is a tiny nib in the insert that keys into the base for accurate alignment.

Dino

I don't know if it's what they used but you could use a hot glue gun or even a piece of double sided trim tape.  3M makes a good one.
