been soo long , since I done mine  , but yes  once the 4 screws are removed ,  should just pull off  , what I remember to actually take the core out , you need to take everything off  & or  apart ,

Core is loose, but for the life of me the tubes wont come off. I soaked it in penetrating oil and went in. Hopefully everything comes apart tomorrow. Next trying to get the evaporator out. Looka like a bunch of small sheet metal screws. Dash is out so now is the time to check all this... :-). Wonder if I will get to work on anything but dash this year? Ha!

think I might of removed the pipes , before I done anything else  ,  that way the heater core was held in place inside the box ,
also , nothing to do with the pipes being removed  , , did you remove disconnect  the  internal water valve connecting rod from the front air door ? core wont come out other wise .
I remember something  about the heater box  ,   that gave me a lot of trouble  :pullinghair: , once I figured it out , was easy   , forget what it was , maybe a spring on the linkage ....  :scratchchin:

Think mine is different being the dual heater core in 68 because there was a front access panel and a few screws and the core comes right out if these pipes come off. I was with you trying to get the pipes off first but when they wouldn't move I disconnected the core to hopefully wiggle it and get it to release.

Finally got it! Had to heat it with a map torch and pry. I see now what you meant about the door rod. What a PITA! Thanks for the help!
