So im shopping for my dream 68, and found a guy that is selling one. Its a numbers matching 383, with an auto. Owner said the car has a high output 383 engine (which he said was super rare). We talked about the car in detail, and seemed knowledgeable. He stated that he rebuilt the engine, put a mild cam, high compression pistons, lifters,  increased compression to 11.5 and the car put down 490whp on a dyno... I was surprised and said "wasnt the 383 rated at 325hp", he said that the HO (high output) was rated at 425 stock. I tried to look up info on any of this, and am coming up empty handed. I asked him if maybe he's confusing 325 and 425, and 490whp with 390whp (which 390whp id believe in), but he insisted that it was 490. Now, i know i have insisted sometimes on things because i remembered them wrong(not too hard to be confused about 100hp in both directions), so im still inclined to believe everything else he said... Figured id check with you guys... Was there such an engine?

OEM 425 HP 383?  No.

But the bore is 4.25.   :scratchchin:

Maybe he confused the hp with torque? The 383 4 bbl (1970) has 425 lb-ft.

V8-383   4-bbl   4.25 x 3.375   10.0:1   HP 330 @ 5000RPM   425 lbs torque@ 3200 RPM

Maybe it's the torque spec he is confused about.

No.

The 425/490 numbers belong to the Hemi in 1968.

U said 1970? Was 68 different? He sounds convincig that its numbers matching.

Its a good assumption that he has the two numbers mixed, which is a fair mistake. However, 425 crank and 490 wtq is quite a difference, is it possible with listed mods? Is the reability affected? How much horsepower would this equaite to?

No, its the same. I couldnt remember the torqe output, so i googled 383 4bbl and found the specs for the 1970 engine :)

Troy

The 383 2bbl had 290 hp/390 ft/lbs, the regular 383 4bbl had 300 hp/400 ft/lbs, and the version that came in RRs and SuperBees (but not Chargers) was 330 hp/425 ft/lbs. These were all essentially the same engine but with exhaust and intake upgrades (maybe a cam in the 330 hp version). I'm gonna say he's not getting the power he thinks through that stock air cleaner and exhaust manifolds - but since he's upgraded a lot you'd expect more than the stock numbers. I wouldn't stress about his claims unless he wants an extra $10k or something for this super rare motor. They made a LOT of 383 powered Chargers.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Maybe with his mods he put down 490 ft/lbs of torque.  That's my guess.

rebuilt with mild cam,  stock manifolds... 490 hp?  um.....maybe with a 150 nitrous shot.  :yesnod:

Anyway drive it, or have him take you for a ride, you'll know if it's pushing over 400 HP instantly.  You'd be like   :o

WOW!  then one has to wonder why all the confusion  :smilielol:

1968 Charger 383 2bbl = 290hp & 383 4bbl = 330hp

per DODGE 1968   numbers were manipulated for many reasons, check out the varied RPM for listed ratings  :scratchchin:

& I  realize the pictures don't represent 100% what was installed in the specified cars (and things changed during the model year)

Engines are like fine wine, they increase in horsepower with age.

Sorry, I was in a hurry and I copied something from the internet. But my point is the same - it's a BS story.
