Is the Dana that much better than the 8/34?  I have the 742 case it seems to handle fine for me personally, but I don't have traction per say.  Would dana be worth it in the end as the final rear end I will ever need.

If you can get one at a good price.

tan top

IMO   big heavy full weight  B-body   & any or all of the following ! ... big sticky  wrinkle wall slicks  /  fully prepped track that's just been sprayed with glue /  manual transmission /  500 plue  lbs of torque  , think it wont be long  before the 8 -3/4 lets go ,   prolly break a Uj  first , then your go to 1330 or what ever  joint , then  maybe / prolly twist or break a axle shaft , then ....  :Twocents:

depends on power / torque of the motor & how/ where  its going to be driven  :shruggy:  ,

I agree with Tan Top and look at the question as being like asking--Is a hemi that much better than a 440?

Some of this is just about having the good stuff in a cool car.

Originality of a restoration is another reason for choosing parts. :Twocents:

I will NEVER WAIST my money on another 8 3/4  unless it is a plain old stock driver.

Seems moser will build you one for 3200 bucks compelte with drum to drum setup....if I can sell my 8/34 for 1k I will buy it.....

do I really need it per say I don't know for the new build up because im not a racer per say.

If you abuse it, dana, traction or not. I have nowhere near 500 ft lbs, but i do have sticky tires and a stick. Broke sevearl 8 3/4's. The stock 7290 joints have not failed. Put a dana together for it and side step launches have not hurt it.

3200 is steep. If you are a good fabricator, you can do it yourself for half that or less depending on how patient you are shopping for parts. even including buying the jig for the axle tubes. I picked up a gm truck housing for 25 bucks at the junkyard. Mopar ends are around 100 bucks, i went overkill with stange 35 spline axles but i planned for power down the road.

c00nhunterjoe

Better yet- why do you need a dana? Just watch me launch my baby little 383 at 2500 rpm. 8 3/4, 742 case, 4.30's hardened 30 spline axles......

NICE!!!!  I can always just keep my 742 setup till it breaks im just adding up my expenses for new build.

c00nhunterjoe

I dont know about nice, lol. But i did expect to break it again so i trailered it to the track. Snapped on the 1st moderate launch. I did tree the other guy....hahaha

Dana 60s add a lot of unsprung weight and 3.54 the tallest gear ratio.  Not the best choice for a highway cruiser.

The Dana certainly has its place.  But I wouldn't spend $2-3 grand just to get one if the 8.75 wasn't breaking.

Big traction + stick trannys will break rearends more than high horsepower numbers.

X2. If it aint broke, dont fix it... unless its about to break. In this posters case, i would say it is NOT needed. As far as weight goes, you can do alot to a dana. Next time mine is out, im going to weigh it because noone beleives me how light it is. My dana weighs less then my 8 3/4.

It depends on the application  :yesnod:

Aren't you planning to build a 572 Hemi and install a Passon 5spd trans ?   :scratchchin:

If so.....Dana is the only option with 1350 u-joints :Twocents:

I got a complete set up minus the drums from Strange, it is their S60 with the pinion snubber bosses on the housing. If I recall it was around $2100 or so but that was a few years ago.
