How to tell differences between P/S pumps

Found in parts catalog that I have one with key slotted shaft(sounds painful) they don't say which type is which. Parts catalog shows same# for both reservoir while there are differences, ie return line is on back of one and on side of the other one.

I think the saginaw might have a slotted shaft, but not sure, and not sure about the others.  For what it is worth, the pulley I have on my 70 (federal) pump (it originally had the early Saginaw) looks like the one on the late Saginaw on this page).

Hope this helps and that someone who knows more than my pipes in.

Or maybe it protects us. 

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

Federal gets a hose coming from the front, Saginaw both on rear.

Saginaws could get two reservoir shapes, round and triangular ( tipically on laters ). Pump itself is the same thought.

As far I recall my 74 got a slotted pulley saginaw. Tipically GMs get theated shafts for the pulley

My '71 383 had the keyed shaft Saginaw. While the pumps are pretty much interchangeable, the reservoirs are not. The return hose fitting on the back side of the reservoir comes out at different angles. I tried just using one from my parts stash, but the return hose fitting hit the engine. So, I had to swap my old reservoir onto a rebuilt pump. If it's not already too late, crack the nut on the pump shaft loose while it's still on the engine and the pulley's being held by the belt. Much easier than trying to break it loose on the bench without damaging the pulley.

of course, reservoirs are matched to the brand or even the car model... On Saginaw pumps you can tell which reservoir is to GM or which is to Mopar by the return hose tee location and not just the angle, aside the pulley kind/shape

Even the shaft can be interchangeable. You can get ANY pump... keyed or threated shaft and use it changing the shaft/pulley assembly and reservoir from your old one. Of course need to get dissasembled, to remove the shaft snap ring and pull out the shaft to install your one.

the deal is get the new vanes and rotor kit, which are made from "unobtanium" from parts dealers. It seems these are just available to rebuilt shops and manufacturers... bad! this pieces are really easy to be serviced by any of us without any special tool. These are the parts what usually gets damaged and needs to be serviced to get them rebuilt

I got lucky could find locally a rotor and vanes kit from somewhere new on its box and service my old pump. But that was just luck. Not cheap thought

I just received the Borgeson adapter that you have to cut steering column to fit, would have preferred the Bergman but I can't justify the cost. Of course now that I have the Borgeson, the Bergman price has dropped. Thanks, XH29, the link was very helpful with my planning in the future for a hydroboost, was worried about the pump pressure, if I have problems I'll dial up the pressure by shimming, and respringing
