What modern features have you integrated into your car?

QuoteI definitely want a wide ratio. I know I can get a wide ratio T56 with the close ratio 5th and 6th, which would be fun on the highway at high speeds, but is it really worth the extra work? I wish I could try them all out first.

Look hard at the T56 ratios.  I mean the bottom 4 gears too.  The "wide ratio" (2.97 first gear) is more like a close ratio in the first 3 gears with a big oversize gap between 3rd-4th.

This calculator is the best one I've found for graphing out gear ratios in a useful way.  Then you can see what I'm talking about:

https://www.blocklayer.com/rpm-gear

Tremec probably did it that way because it matches some modern factory 6spds.  But the OEMs might have done that to hit a dragstrip time.  It wasn't necessarily done for ideal cruising.

Tremec's 5spds all have smoother spreads in the lower 4 gears.  But they do some hard jumps with many of the overdrive gears, to get the cruising revs down as far as possible.  Lots of OEM modern muscle cars have 5-6spd manuals with big gaps too.  Lots of owners are fine with it but it would bug me.

If you want to see an absolutely stupid set of gear ratios, look at the overdrive 833s.
First is something like 3.09, second is around 1.67, 3rd is 1 to 1, 4th is what... .80?
The rpm drop from 1st to 2nd is a punch to the dick.
Conversely...
The Tremec TKO has a 2.87 1st, a 1.87 2nd. The closer spread means that you don't shift from 6000 rpms down to 3400 from 1st to second.

The goal for the 3rd/center brake light is not for the immediate car on rear, but next ones behind it, to see it throught the windshield of the ones in front.

Sure that gives more time to brake, knowing the car 3 or 4 cars away in front of you is braking.
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

Good point.  That's a factor too.

My 74 has quite a few modern features.
505 stroker, Fuel injection, gearvendors od, Braum seats, HUGE brakes front and rear, 20" wheels i just got made to look like kelsey hayes recall wheels, custom dash with a double din radio, custom center console. Basically i have the shell of a 74 charger, but not much else.

I wish i could figure out how to post a picture on here again, its been years.

Lithium battery.
Holy cow, you'd be amazed at the cranking power and light weight. I'm talking 13.6 volts and 7 lbs!
Yeah, just a measly 7 lbs!

I'm just busy teaching kids how to work on cars, so I dont come around much.

The 5 day road trip showed how some modern touches can make an old car easier to live with.
Modern seats. The wife sometimes gets sleepy on road trips so having the ability to recline and snooze a little is quite a nice asset to have.
The rearview mirror has a thermometer and compass. The thermometer is pretty cool. I don't usually need a compass during the day but it was overcast so it helped there. It also helped at night.
The Lithium battery allowed the car to spin over so fast, the car starts faster than our 2 late model cars do.

I'm hooked on the Wolfbox mirror. Cameras front and rear. Clock, speed, compass. And the one touch power windows, and power doors and trunk are the best.  I'm doing this to all of my cars for sure.

Wolfbox - What do you use most on that thing?  The front & rear cameras?

Kern Dog

I'm still considering power windows. From what I read, they are no heavier than the stock manual crank stuff.
If it could be done in a clean manner, I'd be open to a small rear view camera.

Mike DC

I don't want power windows.  I've dealt with too many busted ones.

I tried original motors but they were so so, even after cleaning them out. I have light weight Dorman motors from Rockauto with DEI 530T window modules, and the windows zip up and down fast and smooth. All 4 close automatically when locking the doors as well. Very handy. It's a pretty simple mod.

Ford, Subaru, Chrysler, Toyota, I've seen problems with lots of them.

They can have my manual windows when they pry them from my cold dead hands.

Honestly I get the appeal of electrics, but only if they were built well enough.  And considering that the OEMs don't even build them to my satisfaction, I don't have much faith in the aftermarket.

If I was gonna go electric, I would probably still leave the driver's door manual.  IMO the biggest appeal of electrics is being able to control all the windows without reaching around.  That's not an issue on the driver's door.  Meanwhile, the driver's door gets the most wear & tear (read: it's the first one that fails).  And it has the most safety implications in a wreck.
