what makes a magnum a magnum?

the 440 mag had duel valve springs a 460 lift cam verses a 430 lift cam {I think thats right} and a windadge tray in between the oil pan and crank also had a differnt oil pan had excelaration baffels in it,with a diferant oil pick up.
life's to short have a blast before its gone.

Yes.  Unless it is a numbers matching block from a two barrel 383 car as an example.  The part number and casting number on the block would remain the same but the vin number would be for a car which may have been a two barrel version.  It becomes a question of semantics possibly at that point.

Are you talking about the modern Magnum small blocks or the older ones?  Because if you mean a 340, they only came as a high performance engine so it's a moot point for them.  Did the 360 (the 70's versions) come in standard and Magnum?

I think that is specific to the modern versions though.  Same terminology as they used in the 70's but with a new definition.  The blocks may be the same as the old ones but the new style Magnum heads are certainly different from the old ones.  We're kind of talking about two different things now.  A new Magnum and an old Magnum.

The noteworthy differences between the 350hp and 375hp 440 engines were the camshaft, pistons and exhaust manifolds.

On the smallblock magnum engines ; the older 273/318/340/360 are referred to as LA engines while the newer versions are simply "Magnum" engines available in 318 & 360ci displacements. The newer magnum engines use different heads, stud mounted rocker arms (like GM) as opposed to shafts (older LA engines). The newer magnum's also run roller cams from the factory.

Paul, i'm no smallblock expert but my understanding is that they're basicly the same block that use different heads. The newer Magnum engine blocks don't have the internal oil passage drilled for the rocker arms because the magnum heads use pushrod oiling with the stud mounted rockers. The (new) Magnum engines also have their own unique intake manifolds as well.

There were not any 440's without at least a 4bbl were there? Maybe in a marine or truck application perhaps?

Yes you're right.  I got reading along there and started thinking about Magnum engines in general and the 383 and forgot all about the original question right there at the top of the page. DOH!

There were 3 LA blocks , the normal block used up to 87 , the roller cam block used 87 - 92 with TBI & with provisions for the roller lifters which earlier blocks didn`t have & the magnum block used 93 up with roller cams , pushrod oiling system & MPI

There was a 230 horse 318 Magnum in 1992 that I believe had a slightly different cam profile than later 318's. We had one in a 1/2 ton pick up and it was a strong little engine.  I think the 360 Magnum 1st came out in 1993 though.

Carburetors were also different. For the 440 engine in 1970 there are 7 different listings for 4 barrel carbs. Both Holley and Carters were used

Boy, that topic generated a lot of opinions over on the Moparts A12 forum here about 6 months back.  There is not a clear consensus on whether the dipsticks went to the inside or the outside of the exhaust manifold.  They were posting pictures of various survivor cars that had the dipsticks both ways.  Not to mention whether the tube was painted or left bare.  Sheesh...  I though I was bad about trivial details, but those guys are nuts...

intresting   , i have only seen them inside, the one i have in  my charger now  is  E440 none hp , runs to the out side was  originally un painted . wasn't there some thing about HEMI dip stick also  handles being white or brown or something      :stirthepot:
