I'd like to not have pop ups! I clicked the popup but it takes you to some page which tried to download spyware onto my computer! I'm not saying that I don't liek the screensaver, just that I don't like the popups featuring it and then trying to download crap onto my computer.  :icon_smile_big:

You can tell Windows XP not to allow pop-ups.  Click the following link for a quick tutorial to fix that:  http://groups.msn.com/AlaskanCreations/popupdisable.msnw.

LahTera

Note:  That fix only works with dialog box pop-ups, not Internet Explorer pop-ups.

:iagree: I've got Firefox on my home confuzer...I think I've witnessed ONE popup in a little less than a year. :boogie:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Netscape is about the same.  Been using it for several months, and I get very few popups.
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.  Especially if they have access to the internet.

Drache

If you are getting popups no matter what websites you go to and if you are getting them every three minutes or more, download an anti spyware program. You just might have a spyware program that instantly sends you pop up messages.

Ack!

ME is Win98.  It just has a few differences.

Don't bother getting Spyware or Webroot.  Just get Windows XP and upgrade, and get a decent anti-virus software, like McAfee or Norton.  Right now, McAfee is the user-friendliest.

Spyware and Webroot will just pop up and ask you annoying questions, as does Norton Internet Security these days.  If you get McAfee Internet Security, you won't get pop-ups.

You're looking at about $70 for McAfee (unless you can find a deal, sometimes CompUSA has 'em on sale) and $99.00 for your Windows XP upgrade.  Takes a little over 200 Megabytes on the 'puter, you can set it up to look like your classic Win98, and you can follow my tutorial link to block pop-ups.  It'll run better in most cases, too.  When you install it, keep a back-up of your Win98 on board (it'll ask if you want to during installation).  Keep the back-up until you're satisfied that the Win XP will work.  (Get the upgrade version of XP and save $50.00, too!)

My computers have only XP and McAfee -- NOTHING else, and I get no pop-ups or viruses, etc.  (Now, if you go to a bunch of porn or raunchy download sites, well, you're asking for trouble -- LOL!)

LahTera

Drache

XP is one of the insecurist windows I've ever dealt. I so called "downgraded" from XP to ME due to alot of problems with security issues. Not to mention I do alot of online gaming and when a grenade that you throw comes straight back and blows up in your face just because you have Windows XP... it kinda makes the gaming experience not so fun lol.

Like I said before I've run Ad-Aware Professional and it stops the aw-aware BEFORE it gets onto your computer. The only better you can get is a firewall for that. Every week Ad-aware downloads the newest upgrades for stopping the newest spyware and adware.

Avast is the only bloody anti-virus I trust now ever since both Norton and McAfee failed to stop certain viruses from coming onto my computer. Avast is not only really easy to use and fast, but your updates are all completely free unlike Norton which you must purchase the newest version every year just to keep getting their upgrades which my step mother keeps doing.

Man, I don't understand ... I have no problems whatsoever with viruses or gaming performance.  How old is your computer?  Just curious.

I don't know if it's because of our ISPs up here or what, but as long as I keep everything updated, my computers run like a breeze.

Must keep them maintained, ya' know, in order to keep them from having problems.

What sort of ISP do you have?  Do you have broadband?

I just don't understand, unless you didn't update everything?

What is it that I do that keeps mine going fine?  <Sigh!>  I'd like to answer THAT question some day.  I tweak Windows XP myself and never have problems.

LahTera

Drache

LahTera,

I used to run a computer store and such. My computer is exactlly now 4 months old and it's updated to the most latest. Anyways I just prefer the look of 98/ME than XP. I tinker with windows here and there just for the fun of it.

But as for Ad-aware and Avast anit-virus, no one will ever get me to change back to anything else I've already tried.

I have the same problem, just different year car and movie. I hate when people ask me what my car is (a '66) and then say "Oh, like in Bulitt" after I say it's a Charger.

Back on topic, though: Internet Explorer does a great job of preventing popups, if you up the security settings. The trade off is that you can't visit some of "those" sites.
Sixty-eights look great and the '69 is fine.

Huh??? Remind me not to go to that computer shop for advice...  :eyes:

You know, I haven't spent a dime (or hardly any effort) on anti-spyware, anti-virus, anti-trojan, adblockers, pop-up blockers, or any other gizmos. If you have any idea what you are doing it's very hard to actually GET a virus. Virus/trojan writers prey on the least common denominator and pop-up ads and spyware rely on the fact that most people never change default settings or pay attention to what they are doing. I use XP "Pro" or 2000 almost exclusively because any of the 95/98/ME versions are garbage if you actually have to do any development. I am always amazed when the most common answer to any problem is "reboot" (which is almost always from someone using 95/98/ME). I hate rebooting - the only time I ever shut the machine down is if I'm adding hardware or an update requires it. Hardly any of the software I need to use even works on unsupported versions of Windows and all of my games work perfectly fine on XP. If you are unfortunate enough to have to be on a network with a bunch of Macs ( :icon_smile_big: ) then XP and OSX will make things a lot easier. Both also play nice with Linux file servers. I'm around a LOT of geeky people on a regular basis and there's not a single one who would ever recommend "downgrading" as an option.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Drache

Well I have never had any problem running 98/ME! Since there are aot of family members who use my computer and such and don't really know is the reason I switched back from XP because all I ever did was XP was scan the bloody thing every night with anit-virus programs. With 98/ME I can upgrade it myself since I've been working with it since the very start and I have yet to get a single virus whether I use the computer or a family member.

Everyone has their own preferences, there are no right or wrong about which windwos to use and which one is better than another.
