I have a 71 superbee in great need of a passenger side fender. I just bought one off ebay that the guy said was off a 72, but now I'm not sure. How can yo tell a 72 from a 73/74. Thanks in advance for the help.

Measure the wheel opening.  If it matches your other fender its a 72, if its taller, its a 73/74.

After taking a closer look at that picture im leaning towards it being a 73/74 fender.   The reasons being that I think thats 73/74 SE chrome trim instead of the 71/72 trim.  Twilt maybe can tell you better than I can by looking at it.  Also, im not sure if 71/72 had those rubber pads that support the bumper, is that a 73/74 only thing?  Those are the only things I know of that you might be able to tell from by looking at that picture.

Looks like a 73-4 to me.I believe the rubber to be a 73-4 thing for the Feds and the Bumper Mandates.

The guy sells alot of this stuff on ebay so he probably is right about what year car its from...  Doesnt mean that it hasnt been swapped out in the past though and maybe he didnt notice or even know the difference.  I would just ask him to measure from the top of the wheel opening to the top of the fender and compare it to your car.

E-Z............Check the wheel opening molding. If its smooth, its a 72. If it has contour ridge in it...73/4

hemihead

Looks like it was a 73-74 SE fender.Just by the wide moulding stain on the dogleg but I could be wrong.

It looks like 73-74 to me. It looks to be cut out higher (wheel opening) than a 72 fender, bumper outline molding looks like 73-74 (71-72 wraps around deeper-on side towards bumper) and Hemi makes a good point about the discolored area on the dogleg which looks to be the exact width of 73-74 SE rocker moldings....................... here is a good shot of a 72 fender

After blowing the pics up some I think I can see a ridge in the molding like Twilt said. I am beginning to lean towards 73/74.

Nacho-RT74

several differences but hard to notice from the distance.

-73/74 wheel opening cut is around 1 1/2" higher
-valance splash shield is plain on 71/72.
-Headlights pedestal is shorter on 71/72

The gray rubber and molding attached on to fender is the same to all 3rd gens. Bumper filler difference is attached on bumper and that's the one just on 73/74.

The inner rubber cushion... I can't recall right now but I think IS NOT JUST to 73/74 and they also is part of assembly on 71/72 but shorter.

I'm thinking about is a 73/74 JUST because the SE molding area on dogleg. And compairting with pic about 72 posted by Twilt, opening cut looks pass over the sidemarker height.

Front splash shield looks also 73/74 one.

EDITING:- - -Headlights pedestal is shorter on 71/72 - - -  JUST ON 71/72 HIDEAWAYS SETUPS

Here is a comparison pic of a rechromed 71-72 bumper outline molding compared to a 73-74. They are different. Second pic is a NOS set of 71-72 moldings.

Nacho,  I know the headlight pedestals on 71-72 cars with concealed (hideaway) headlights are shorter than those on cars with standard grilles.
Are you saying that 71-72 pedestals for cars w/o concealed headlights are shorter than the 73-74 pedestals?

By looking at the front molding it kinda looks like 71-72 molding. Now I'm not sure

Measure from the top of the wheel opening to the top edge of the fender DIRECTLY above it. If it is the same as your car it is a 72, if it is a good bit closer to the top (Taller wheel opening) it is 73-74. From looking at it laying on the floor I am 99% sure it is 73-74.

I have a fair set of 72 Fenders and doors

Part number please??
That will tell the tale..

About the molding, yes they could be different just because a small cut out on top to be able to fit the bumper closer but I wanted to mean they were also an option and same look on earliers and laters, but not just on 73/74 because the bumper filler. The bumper filler is a different stuff than that molding and there is not relationship to take a conclusion about that.

About pedestal. Yes you are right. Regular grilles set ups are the same pedestals, just hideaways setups are shorter... my bad. I'm on automatic when think on 71/72 setups since is becoming common the change to hideaways LOL.

Bumper cushion or pad impact attached on fender or whatever you want to call is part of assembly also on 71/72, same as 73/74, but of course different between them ( confirmed by part number )
