73se 400 magnum

Just for a baseline number I'm going to have this place dyno it and see. Engine is a 400 magnum .30 over pretty much all stock but a 4 bbl carter afb 625 cfm and a new air cleaner. The car runs really good now but it sat for almost 10 years in a garage and has had a complete tune up. New plugs and dist. and plug wires. That's it. No headers yet. It will still lay some rubber but I can tell it's not quite as strong as it once was.

Very nice car.  I dig the third gens.  I am going to say about 275hp.  They really detuned the 400's in 73' and 74'.

Now what you need to do is stroke that baby! yesnod

Hey guys. I finally did the dyno. Tan top was really close. 194 rwhp and 251 tq. Not bad for an original 34 yr old car. Rev-ed to about 4800rpm. I was hoping for 250 but like I said this is just a baseline number for me. I have big plans for the engine, within the next 2 years I hope to double those numbers.

Yes it's the original engine. But I still may build a 440 and just store the 400.

 iagree
I would stroke it.  You would get a much cleaner original look.  And I think you would not be dissapointed with the stroker. If my engine had not already been swapped to a 440.  Thats exactly what I would have done. icon_smile_big

Let's say I go with a 451 stroker kit from 440 source. Is there a cam size best suited for that? I have Don Dulmage's book and he says a 310 ad. dur. with .525 lift is what he put in a 400 race block. The only ones I see in summit are 235-275.

Better to be a "has been", than a "never was"

« Reply #15 on: May 27, 2007, 09:12:31 AM »

Cam selection, or rec's, are usually based upon many factors.

Some considerations to finding a good cam choice for a "given" engine application are;

Comp. Ratio, Heads/flow/scfm, Intake & carb, exhaust, Gear ratio, Tire Diameter, trans & stall speed, vehicle weight, driving style & "where" you want the power band.

Try and provide as much info as possible, and I'm sure you'll get lots of great Cam reccomendations on here.

Or I could just buy one of these. www.ebay.com #7997141602. What do you all think of this crate motor compared to the expense of building up my existing motor with a 440 source kit and a good top end.

I think that guy low balled me on that dyno to try to sell me some headers. He just left it in D and accelerated, wouldn't it have done better if he had shifted using the slap stick?

in a word ?  no...     if you're pulling for hp and tq numbers all that matters is your top end power...    shifting the transmission either soft or hard has nothing to do with effecting the HP reading....
