I have heard a few different reasons for this but does anybody know why some 440s are blue and some are orange.

It depends on the year and the horsepower of the engine. Through 1968 all 440's were turquoise, from 69-71 the 440HP's were orange, and from 1972 on they were all blue.

I can't remember if standard 440's were turquoise through 1971 or if that changed after 1970.

Has there not also been some debate about how hard and fast the rules are on engine paint?  I seem to recall that there are a number of exceptions that get through the cracks.

  How would you determine in your 440 was a "low performance" Holley, or a "high performance" Carter?  
      (I've got an Edelbrock 4bbl on her now)

I almost positive the HP's only came with Carter's. The standard 440's had the holley. There were different number Carter's depending on the tranny. For example, my '69 440 4 speed came with a Carter 4617.  According to my parts book for '68 if your car is an automatic it should be a Carter 4429...if it is a 4 speed it would be a 4428.

To tell if it is a original HP engine look on the raised pad above the water pump. It will have HP or HP2 stamped in it. This really makes no difference performance wise if an engine is going to be re-built. The only big differences were in the cam, exhaust manifolds, and maybe valve springs(?). The block, crank, and heads were the same with either. The other thing is the late 440's got cast crank's and lower compression, look for the wider damper on the front to spot those.

I have been told by older timers than me  that some HP 68 440's did come with 600 Holley's, I have
never seen one myself all of mine are the 4429's AVS single screw carbs and they work great for me.

But it makes no difference, all 68 HP 440's and non HP 440's are painted Turquoise.
