Hey Guys -

Anyone know the EXACT length stem to stern on a Daytona?

pettyfan43

Too long for your garage  :whistling: :whistling:  :D

Seriously, seems like it's about 18-20 inches longer than a standard 68-70 b-body.

Someone here should know exactly.

daytonalo

18 ft , 4 inches , if I remember back when I measured my Land Yacht :icon_smile_big:

nascarxx29

I though it was something like 22.6

I'm going from memory here but I think it's 18'-10" give or take an inch.  I figured 19' when spec'ing out a car hauler/trailer though.

A standard '69 Charger is 207.9" long (17'4") incidentally.

P.S.  Don't use the dimensions from the brochure that Dave just posted - I had noticed from looking at those spec's before that the length given was for a '70 Charger not a Daytona...  Never did figure out why Chrysler put that in there.   :shruggy:

Nice to know I was right when i saw that figure, and so,  if the nose is 18 as I've often heard... ?..   :scratchchin:
better get a measurment from an owner or three... you know ma Mopar..   :shruggy:

According to Mr. Isaac himself, it's a "country mile".

edit: it also lists: "Five Passengers"   Must be the rare bench seat option..  :shruggy:

Plymouth Superbird

History

1970

Introduction: The Plymouth Super Bird was created for the same reason as the Dodge Daytona -- a full on high speed race machine designed for the NASCAR races, but available to the public.

1970 Plymouth Super Bird

Comments: Trying to capture some of the success that their Dodge brothers had in 1969 with their Daytona, Plymouth tried the same thing in 1970 with their creation, the Plymouth Superbird. Although similar in appearance, the Superbird was actually quite different from the Daytona. The Superbird was based on the Plymouth Road Runner and the nose, airfoil, and basic sheet metal was different between the Daytona and Superbird. The special nose added 19 inches to the overall length (the Daytona's was 18 inches), and the trunk spoiler was more angled and higher than the Daytonas. On both models, the spoiler was two feet high so that the owner could open the trunk. Although it created quite an impression on the street, the wing did almost no aerodynamic good under 90 mph.

NASCAR only required 500 copies to be built in 1969, but in 1970, NASCAR required a manufacturer to build one unit per dealer. In the end, Plymouth built a total of 1,920 SuperBirds. SuperBirds were available with three different engines. The most popular was the basic Super Commando 440 V8 with a single four barrel carb rated at 375 bhp. Next up was the 440 Six Pack rated at 390 bhp. At the top, and ordered by just 93 buyers, was the mighty 426 Hemi, rated at 425 bhp. Despite the success of the SuperBird on the tracks, 1970 would be the only year it was made.

Production: 1,920
440-4: 1,162
440+6: 665
Hemi: 93

Engines:
426 V8 Hemi 425 bhp @ 5000 rpm, 490 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm.
440 V8 375 bhp @ 4600 rpm, 480 lb-ft @ 3200 rpm.

Performance:
440/390: 0-60 in 5.9 seconds, 1/4 mile in 14.26 seconds @ 103.7 mph.
426/415: 0-60 in 4.8 seconds, 1/4 mile in 13.50 seconds @ 105.0 mph.

I think the nosecones were about 18" long or so (maybe 19" for the 'Bird with the rubber strip on front), but that doesn't mean that it added 18" to the length of the car.  For a Daytona, the nose was grafted on to the '70 Charger front clip sheet metal without the bumper in place.  That undoubtedly accounts for the differences in overall length.  If you added the 18" to the length from the bumper/hood gasket, my guess is you'd be adding right at 16" to the overall length of the car.  Spot on with what the Supercars book says.

Jim, how long is the red trailer you use to pull your cars around with?  If it's a 20' box that has got to be a tight squeeze getting a Daytona tied down securely.  It seemed longer from what I remembered.

Pettybird, 62max or some of the other 'Bird owners perhaps can chime in, but I didn't think the wing extended past the rear bumper?   :shruggy:

Thank you to all those who responded. I am simply amazed at the wealth of knowledge that is on this list.

Cheers - Mike

The bumper definitely sticks out further than the wing.

Also, it seems like it's harder to park the 'birds in the 20x20' garage than the Daytona.  Not that the Daytona is a roomy fit.  When we go to a meet, mom puts her 911 in the garage, and it's an endless source of amusement to look at the teeny tiny spot that it occupies compared to the monsters.

The 20x20' thing sucks.  Subtract 4" front and rear for the stud wall, subtract room for the garage door in its frame...  If you gently bump the nosecones into the front wall, you can BARELY squeeze by the tail at the door, so if you don't, you can't even get by them.

Wouldnt it suck if you bumped into the wall too hard and damaged the nosecone and then the door came down and smoked the wing and damaged it too....man, that would be funny but if I owned the car..it would suck :smilielol:

Dodge sheet metal on a Plymouth... whodathunkit??

3--Daytona

Hey,Geno,,,,, My first enclosed trailer was a 20ft, box off of a truck, with house trailer axle's under it.
I was much younger, slimer and no Parkinson diese,,had to act like a snake to tie down.  My next trailer was a 22ft, and the trailer I pull now is 26ft.
Iv'e got a new Stanely tape,
I'll look around, see if I can find a Daytona to check for length.
