Hey guys/gals,

Need a little help here. Got a 73 with a 400, the car had A/C but someone pulled the compressor and the rest of the parts out  :brickwall:

The car has the big 100 Amp alt, and if possible id like to keep it for now. The problem is, since the guy removed the compressor i cant use the proper groove on the harmonic (sits one groove off), and if i put it so it lines up...it then rubs on waterpump/fan housing. Im getting real tired of the belt sqeal when she is reved up. Is it possible to use a different bracket? If not can someone direct me to the proper bracket and alternator.

Thanks,

Frank

a friend of mine get rid of AC ( suposelly temporally ) and also run the belt directly to alt. Also rubbing a little bit with water pump bolt.

you could use a shorter belt to make fit sightly far away from water pump

otherwise, use the Non A/C pulleys setup. Need diff water pump pulley ( deeper ) to meet with alt, and then use a diff belt to steering column

I think 4 grooves crank pulley can be keeped, but for correct setup, There are 3 grooves pulleys, or even 2 grooves one. I have allways get doubts about crank pulley kinds. Also for correct setup, use single groove alt pulley

As far alt brackets... A/C and NON A/C alt brackest are diff yes, but alternator keeps on same place so that won't change nothing on alt location to meet with pulleys.

Thank nacho,

Where can i find the non A/C pulley for the water pump? Or what does it look like? I'll be going to carlisle this week so ill just find one there. Is it smaller or bigger?

Nacho-RT74

is deeper... dunno if bigger or smaller, but the fact is deeper.

Probably bigger too. smaller are to make turn faster water pump when you have A/C

OK,

If i move it to the correct spot it rubs on the water pump housing. Any ideas?

I double checked and it does not rub on the pulley for the fan like i thought, rather it rubs on the housing (outside) of the water pump if i place it on the correct groove on the crank pulley. So i dont see how changing the fan pulley will make any difference. If the bracket was mounted lower i wouldnt have a problem with it rubbing.  :scratchchin: :scratchchin:

Unless the new fan pulley moves it further IN and the belt then goes around the pulley and the crank while the PS pump pulley then goes directly around the crank pulley?? Is that what you mean by "Deeper"?

Think i answered my own question,

So the new pulley should set things up like that? (similar) and the PS pump will then go direct to the crank?

Nacho-RT74

yes you answered your own question LOL

alt brackest are diff but just because A/C compresor use same bolt locations than non A/C alt brackets, then on A/C setup the bracket was moved deeper ( that's teh reason why alt bracket fits on back of front "ear" ), but alt keeps on same place.
