Scaring Ricers & Setting off Car Alarms since 1984

« on: August 20, 2008, 11:52:48 AM »

I remember in 1969/70 there was a Craig Breedlove Special just after the DAYTONA was introduced, well i finally found something on it..
it used a number of streamlining pieces that were to be sold for both the track and street, a full color cover of the car was on a late '69 motor trend cover,.. i do recall, the DAYTONA was mentioned as an inspiration. i never heard of the car again intill i just found this on the web.
also if intrest this article dates from Dec. '68.  shruggy

If anyone else has any info please feel free to post up.

If I read it correctly, AMC didn't choose it, Craig Breedlove did.  It was a body kit that he developed and hoped to sell through AMC dealers.

yeah, seems right, perhaps he was wanting to do a Shelby type thing. seems to have died out though..
i know i have that motor trend article buried downstairs somewhere since 1970...  shruggy

What about it?  I think rav440 asked the right question, if AMC were going to do an aero car, my personal opinion is that it would have been based on the Matador.  Of course, the aero wars were pretty much over by the time it came along.

Brock, I don't think the Daytona could be an inspiration when the article on the AMX was December 1968.....the 500 hadn't even failed yet.

I've always liked the AMX but that aero package is FUGLY.

breedlove was doing all sorts of salt flat runs so it was probably his own project he was hoping to shot to AMC Brass..
my memory of the motor trend article is they wrote it to seem like it was a factory type special breedlove was handeling for them,..
as i recall that issue came out in fall '69 or early '70. way after the date on the one above.
These old magazines i picked up last sunday at the flea market are a real hoot.
there's all kinds of little gems in them. like the t-bird rumored to be going front wheel drive, the up comming chysler turbine cars due in 1966 and G.M.s upcomming rotery engines...  lol The letters to the editors and brief takes are absolutly facinating, the best ones are the sports car graphics then the Road & Tracks then the Car Lifes then the Car and Driver then the Motor Trends which reads like it was written my automobile company P.R. writers.
One of the real gems is the Champion spark plug ads that give two page ads with all the latest race winners and photos.
i may go back tomarrow and get some of the late '50s issues. My personal collection started about '66.
  but i digress...  Tongue
