For the people who read the article in this months MCG about the overdrive kit available for the Chrysler 833 trans, I emailed them for prices. A little steep for me but  here it is.

The conversion kit is $1495.00 or you can order the complete trans for $2995.00.

Of course if you want an overdrive tranny, the kit is the cheapest way to go compared to Gear Vendors and Kielser.

That's cool. When I heard about it earlier in the year the price was closer to $4k. That would put it right in line with the Keisler but without cutting any non-factory holes. I haven't had a chance to read all of the article but it seems like they put a bunch of research into it. For comparison, they sell standard rebuild 18 spline transmissions for ~$1600. Their new OD has an 18 spline input shaft and if it comes with one of their aluminum cases then the price isn't too unreasonable.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Sounds like a decent price for a new 18 spline. Is it a 4 speed or 5 speed? I will have to check out the article to see what the gear spacing is. I picked up one of the factory OD units for the Challenger out of a '80 slant six van for $200 with the shifter. Chryco likes them so I am curious to see how it performs.

It remains a 4 speed. Of course 4th gear is overdriven. Just trying to remember off the top of my head, but it makes a 3.54 gear act like a 2.89 or there abouts.

4th is a .80 overdrive.

Not bad for somebody with 3.54 gears .   Takes that 2900 rpm 65mph in the right lane and makes it 2300 which is livable.
It's stilll the old long throw shifter but it's a viable option for somebody that's just out cruising.     A guy I know had Passon rebuild his 833 a couple years ago and he likes it... he just now rebuilt his shifter too.

Seems like a neat "bolt in" option. If price and install was the same for Keisler's 5 speed, I'd go for the 5 speed, but Passon will probably get my business when the stroker grenades my 23 spline 4 speed.

why not just get an OD 833 out of a late 70's truck then?

*Speed costs money son, how fast do you want to go, and for how long?"
*"Build the biggest engine you can afford the first time."
*"We normally wouldn't use a 383 for this build, parts and labor for a 440 cost the same."

Passon's "new" one has larger bearings and an 18 spline input shaft to make it much stonger than the Mopar OD 4-speeds. It's been completely redesigned but uses a factory sized case. For all of the changes you'll have to read the article.
