i just bought a complete dash out of a 68 runner to put in my wifes 69 runner.  from what i was told, they are completely interchangeble, but i would have to get 68 runner engine and light harness to match up with the dash harness.  i need to switch the vin plates.  what is the best way to do that.....do i have to notify dmv?

Why do you want to change the whole dash frame? That will involve removing the windshield as well. As long as you are doing exactly what you have said I don't really think what you are talking about doing is illegal. You are not supposed to tamper or swap VIN's but, you are mearly changing a part out. The special rivets are available from time to time on Ebay. The other approach I have heard of is to drill the rivet from below and then epoxy it back on the new dash...this keeps the correct star rivet look.

i want to change everything, because someone took a hack saw to the radio area and i think it would be easier to just pull the whole thing out and put a new one in instead of trying to make junk look like better junk.  thanks though, that was a lot of help.  that's been the only thing holding me back from starting that project.  i'll look around for those rivets.  oh, and why would you have to take the windshield out?

There are bolts that hold the metal dash frame in place in the windshield channel. You need to remove the windshield and rubber seal to get at them.

the windsheild has to be removed
you can carefully remove the rivits & restake them to the other dash frame , you need to carefully bend in the splyed end of the rivit behind the dash frame to remove them
