Was this work shown in these latest pictures done after the car had been dipped? Perhaps I do not have a very good understanding of how rust free a car is after it has been dipped. I guess in my impression of dipping a car I would not have expected to see that.   :shruggy:

They didn't use an acid dip (which is what most people refer to) so remember to compare similar procedures. The process is less aggressive than acid but I'm not totally familiar with it (or with what it leaves behind).

Troy (not Troy Angelley)
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

The first 2 pictures in this series where you see the B5 blue paint and surface rust are before dipping and all the rest are after dipping! Those areas that are spot welded together are rusted up pretty tight in between there after 40 years! There is an earlier set of pictures with the car just back from REDI-STRIP! There will be more pictures of the body and these type of areas coming up. Rust is pretty strong once it gets going it's like weeds in cement or blacktop maybe worse. I've seen metal components actually pushed out or distorted from rust growing in between. Then when you take it apart there is layer upon layer in there!

Thanks for the Pontiac 2 + 2 shots Dave! Those bring back memories!

The next item I will share with everyone is the door pillars. The first pictures are of the extra holes for the alarm system near the dome light switches. I had Troy weld these up and finish those areas since the Daytona didn't come with them! While I'm on the alarm system, during your restoration your shop can do a lot of things to protect the identity of the parts on your car! There are some parts easily removed that are worth good money today! An example would be letters or numbers stamped in the exhuast tip brackets that ride inside the rubber part of the hanger! Never seen but proof their yours should someone steal some parts. I hate to bring this up but you need to protect your investment!

Mopar John

Now let's move on to where the door pillar meets the rocker. This is the area that's partially covered by the carpet and sill plates. Again I am only showing one side of the Daytona. The same work took place on both sides! The first picture shows it as dipped, next is a peak looking forward and under and last is what it looked like opened up! You don't want to leave that under there and ruin a nice job later!

Mopar John

Here is a shot of the area opened up. Then there is one of it prepped and the weldable primer on. The last is of it welded back together ready for finishing work!

Mopar John

The next area that I would like to show is the passengers compartment floorpans. We expected worse but the original pans cleaned up real nice! I will show pictures from after the carpet was removed and then after the body was dipped! Last I will show the repair work. I am glad we retained the original floor pans! The first pictures are of the gas pedal area. This area only needed a few pinholes to be welded up!

Mopar John

Next will be the repairs to the drivers/left floor pan.

Mopar John

Here is the last of the drivers/left floor pan repair and then the passengers/right floor pan repair!

Dave,
I sent you a pm!

Mopar John

I have shown you guys enough rust repair for a while so I'm taking a break. The next batch of photos are of the rear shelf and sail panel area. These were all in very nice shape!

Mopar John

This next batch of photos show the body shell upside down with the roof supports removed! Troy wanted to make sure this was all clean and sealed before they were reinstalled! There is another shot of the rear passengers compartment that was all solid and in nice shape. The last 2 photos are of the finishing work going on the front floor pans. I was starting to feel real good about the front of the Daytona and the passengers compartment at this point. By the way the time frame on this was January 2009. ENJOY!

Mopar John

In other current events, I passed my over 55 NHRA physical and the BITTER LIME 1970 GTX passed the tech inspection for the 2010 racing season! Our 1st test and tune is coming up Saturday April 17th followed by our 1st points meet Sunday the 18th. I removed the transmission yesterday and am taking it to my buddy Keith Long the 727 SPECIALIST to freshen it tommorrow after work! I have also sold my original Superbird nosecone to a guy in Canada that is putting an original car back together! Speaking of Superbird I just won some NOS seals for the Z brackets inside the cone to add to the front end goodies. I also bid on a pair of NOS white PLYMOUTH quarter decals but was outbid so I'm still looking for a pair to finish up the decals. I have also firmed up the slot at Angelly Restorations to take the Superbird in for it's body and paint! This all is part of the plan for TALLADEGA 2014!!!
Only 4 1/2 years and it seems like we were just there! Make plans and be there!! Don't miss another one!!

Man, the sheetmetal on the car looked great, like you said, especially around the rear window. Thanks for the Kudos on the Goodyear GTII's, she drives even better !!!

Hopefully I'll be at 2014, if not with the Daytona, then my newest acquisition, the C500 that's on its very way RIGHT NOW !!!!

 After working about 7 - 12's in a row I'm back!

Mopar John

Here are more pictures of the trunk area when it came back from REDI - STRIP!

Mopar John

More trunk pictures!

Mopar John

About this time I get a call from Troy to disuss the trunk floor! My only concern was, how are the rear frame rails?? He told me that the quarter extension area and the frame rails were pretty good and could be saved! This was great news! I expected to replace the trunk floor. I almost bought a set of 2 piece replacement trunk floor sections a few years ago but decided against it. I was afraid they would start to rust in storage so I didn't. It paid off because AMD came out with a better stamping and was 1 piece!! This would make it easier to install and more like the original! Then Troy tells me that the taillight panel and rear valance have to come off the Daytona to install the new trunk floor!@#$%&*(! While discussing this we came back to the taillight panel. Troy was going to repair the area were it had been pried and bent. He asked me if I knew where an NOS taillight panel was? I told him to start work on the trunk floor and give me a few days. I had remembered one for sale not to long before that! Troy said the labor savings on straightening the old one would offset the NOS one and also would be less repair work on the body! The original floor extensions were removed at this time to be able to repair the bottoms of the quarter panels inside and out! Here are a few more pictures of the trunk area repairs!
