hi guys!it might sound stupid but i think i can confidently ask questions!my car has 2.76 sure grip in now and would like to swap it to 3.55!what do i need to buy and where?know nothing about rear ends so no clue!if i had 2.76 sure grip would it stay sure grip with 3.55 or have to get a 3.55 sure grip!can picture this whole thing!is it hard to swap it?thanks

clanton

You are gonna have to change your speedometer gear. Depending on what kinda of car it is, the trans gearing might have been built around the 2.76, you wont be starting out in first, that and crusing at 60, motor will be winding.

First you will need this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DODGE-MOPAR-8-75-3-55-89-case-RING-AND-PINION-USA-GEAR-/120684899205?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c19616b85 or similar, and one new nut, one crushsleeve if its a 489 housing, gasket for housing and some tools, this can give you some help http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/howto/mopp_0308_mopar_rear_end_gears_set_up/preload.html I used it myself when I did mine, check first out what house you have 741 742 or 489, sure-grip is the same for all house, maybe something forgotten.

I highly doubt its a sure grip with 2.76. thats granny gearing.

I bought a e-body 8 3/4 with cone sure-grip and 2.76 .

Mrs.Caveman

ok thanks!my car is not here yet still on her way and just wanna get the parts that i wanna change or missing!know clue what housing.its a 727 383.was told got posi end in it!is 3.23 would be better for cruising but enough for fast launching?mostly will cruise with her but also want to be able to burn so rubber!

John_Kunkel

The 3.23 is the best all around gear IMHO. If all you want to do is burn rubber you don't need Sure-Grip, a one-legger is easier to spin.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Piston_Freddy

I also believe that the 3.23 would be the best gear. And if you want to to a lot of rubber burning, then this mod is a must! http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,13216.0.html
Or get a torque strap.
Max rim size:15"

Back N Black

I have a 3.23, its a good cursing gear and still can lay down rubber if the need should arise.

Yes, your Top end Speed will be better with 2.76's as opposed to 3.23's or 3.55's and your gas Mileage will be better with 2.76's but...Slow take off!  :eek2: I have 3.55's on my Charger but I have 28 inch tall Tires on the back (I think your's are 26's?) I'm thinking about going with some 3.9's for a even better take off (low to mid range driving is pretty much all I do) I hardly drive on the Highway at all. I drove a Charger with 3.23's and it felt slow compared to mine with 3.55's (The take off) But I agree with the Guy's you can't go wrong with 3.23's  :Twocents:

Cooter

I can't believe no one has asked about tire size yet..All the 3.55 gears in the world won't do any good if she's running a 30" tall tire....
" I have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours researching what works and what doesn't and I'm willing to share"

flyinlow

I assume you have an 8 3/4 inch axle. Why not have more then one carrier. I have a 3.23, 3.55 and a 4.10 carriers. Spares are aways nice if you like doing burnouts.

mikesbbody

Cooter, i mentioned tires i took a look at her charger not 28's on the back for sure! Taller tires do make a difference regarding lower gears so im not sure what you mean? No matter i love my 3.55's with my 28's on the back i personally dont like 3.23's but whatever each to his own

I'm kinda in the same situation and agree. I have 3.55's in the Car now, and have a nice 489 with 3.9's ready to go in at some stage.
In the Future, I will have a taller tire than a 28 (29+) due to my 17's if I can get 2 18's for the back, it may be even Taller! I have another Suregrip (741) but I havent got around to putting it back together I won't put 3.23's in there maybe 3.7's  :scratchchin:
You gotta understand these rear ends are not cheap (good ones) espicially for overseas Charger Owners.

thanks guys!i was told she has 14x7 wheels with 235/60/14 tires all around!dont know how tall they are!when i get the 3.23 sure grip gear do i have to take off the axel from the car or can do it on it!to be honest i can't picture,as i never seen it before, what it involves the whole gear swaping!have to start to learn somewhere!ordered the service manual from ebay thats gonna keep my stupid questions away!dont wanna do a lot of burnouts but knowing myself...thanks again

Brass

I had those tires when I bought my car.  They are 25.1" according to this:

On an 8 3/4 rear you can simply pull the axles and then the gear chunk. Very simple really. 3.23 will be about perfect with those 14 inch wheels and those tires, but if you get taller ones 3.55 is better as the taller the tire the more it raiser the final ratio.

ya the 8 3/4 pig  swap is one of the best designs. The only one I like better was a ford 9" base in a race car which the axle shafts were splined on each end. Take 3 allen bolts off a cover, thread in a small bolt and slide out the axle by 6" on both sides and go to town.

Mrs.Caveman

im planning to get some 15x7 magnum 500s,love them, with 255/60/15 all around!is 3.23 good with it still?what the widest tire i can go with those 15x7 magnums?thanks guys,Veronika

In that case I would run the 3.55.  :Twocents:

:iagree: I don't really know why everyone thinks 3.55's are "Too Much"  :shruggy: 3.23's are a bit too mellow IMO but how are you going to drive your Charger? long Drives? short Drives? these are questions you have to ask yourself.

six-tee-nine

That will give you a 26" tyre. That means with a 3.55 gear you need just over 3000 revs for 70mph with a 3.23 you'll be more around 2800 revs
Greetings from Belgium, the beer country

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

Mrs.Caveman

hi guys!i would use her for short drives and a few long ones but mostly short distances!so 3.55 i have to get!thanks,Veronika

mikesbbody

IMO, with a 28 (or taller) Tire, and mostly shorter drives I think you will like 3.55's a lot depends on how fast you will be driving over the longer distances  :2thumbs: if your not doing 70 all the time I think you will be fine  :Twocents:

Wow - a REAL burnout!  :o I didn't think they made those anymore. Good on you, 1969Chargerrtse.

I don't have any vids but can also attest that 3.23's can lay rubber.
