Cool picture.  I have to agree... I love the fatter wheels and tires on the backs of these cars!  It is very fitting for the rest of the car's crazy attitude.  I love seeing pictures of vintage customized wing cars... or just vintage muscle cars for that matter.  Not like I'm going to go install wheel flares, chop the top, and hang carpet from the roof.... I just like looking at the old pictures to see what was trending during the times.

Thanks for the nice comments. I'll post my "One Owner" Daytona story later today. In responce to the questions; The original steel wheels and dog dish hub caps didn't last a week before I put a set of "ET Unilug" mags on the car. I have 3 of the wheels and all 4 of the hub caps, oh I also have the ETs. My car is the red one (R4) with the rattle can strips on the hood. My brothers car was faster off the line with his 440 4 speed and Dana but I know I would have him on top end with my 440 auto and 3.23s if the two of us had the nerve to stay on the gas long enough to reach "terminal velocity". Here's a pic taken July 14th 1970, the day I brought her home.

If I was a millionaire ( Not even close ) I would buy Jims old car and put it back to what it looked like back in the day...Loved the look of that car.It looked the part ( STOCK CAR )

By no means am I suggesting that your car didn't originally come equipped with this combo, however I'd be very interested in knowing what its fender tag codes are.  Based on those three criteria alone (440/727/3.23), the car should have been equipped with a 2949053 22" radiator rather than the 054 26" variety.  We've seen vintage magazine photos of a Daytona with a 22" radiator so the chances are high that they made at least one such 3.23-equipped animal.  Some documents indicate the lowest (numerical) gear ratio was "supposed" to be a 3.54/3.55 rear end, probably in an attempt to keep the cars' potential top speed limited by engine speed rather than "nerve" as you so aptly mentioned.

I'm really curious to know if that's the original combo and how its fender tag codes read.  Yours would make the first confirmed such car, for me anyway.

Incidentally, GREAT story and photos!!!   :2thumbs:   Even though I'm more of an OEM guy now, I don't honestly remember seeing stock-condition musclecars much in the '60s-'70s.  Most had mag wheels and fat rear tires, air shocks, incredibly loud exhaust, and every bolt-on go-fast goodie in the catalogs.  Pretty much the only cars that stayed "stock" were the grocery getters.

Man! You guys are good! My window sticker says D56 Axle Ratio 3.55. Also A36 Performance Axle Package Includes 3.55 Axel Ratio, Sure Grip Differential. $92.25. I think the center section was swapped out to a 3.23 when the car sat at the dealer from 8/69 till 7/70 when I got it. When the car had about 4000 miles on it the rear end started crunching in a turn. Problem was no Sure Grip oil in the rear end! Years ago I put 3.55s in it but didn't like it on the freeway so the car has 3.23s now. It has a 26 radiator in it. I'll post the window sticker and fender tag if you want. Jim

Thanks for the info, although it'd have been kinda cool to see an oddball equipment package.  It's REALLY cool that you have the original window sticker, etc.  I had an '89 GTA (my first new car purchase, during my misguided Pontiac phase) whose rear axle spider gear & other third-member components went out after less than 10,000 miles... it never donned on me that maybe they didn't put the correct limited slip additive/lube in the case like they did with the ratio swap in your car.  Makes sense!
