Did I fry my MSD box?

I backed the '68 Charger out of the garage to do some work and when I went to put it back in she would not fire. After some troubleshooting I found the black ground wire was fried from the box to the battery. The ground was not loose. I have since switched over to an old Mallory solid state box and it runs fine now. Is this at all common and does anyone know if it is possible to save the box?

If not I have a cool door stop now.  :-\

Thanks

Expensive door-stop. I'd send it to MSD and let them repair it.

Have you done that before? I would hate sending it out and then having it cost more than a new one to repair. The box is probably 20 years old by now with very little use.

No I havent. I ran a 7AL-2 in my dragcar, never any problems with it. If yours is that old, it will probably cost more than its worth to repair.

Maybe a cool paper weight then?  :'(

I'm a firm believer in the MSD boxes.  The only time I had problems was having the positive battery loose.  It'll back fire like crazy and leave you sitting along side the road.  DAMHIK.  Pretty embarassing trouble shooting and all along it's the battery cable.  :-[

Were you running a fuse in line for the box, prolly not huh?  :-\

Yes I do/did have an in-line fuse on the feed side and the fuse was not blown. The entire length of the ground wire was bubbled up so this may have been occurring over a period of time and I did not know it.

The box then I imagine.  I hope I didn't insult by asking about a fuse, didn't know if you installed it or not.

When I got my purple car, I couldn't believe there wasn't one.  Of course there were a lot of things I couldn't believe.

I figured more than likely the box was toast.(literally)

I can't really complain about the MSD as it wasn't exactly new. Two newer Mopar orange boxes went out in less than a week on the '69 last year.  :rotz:

Thanks for the help.

I bought a new 6al to replace the 6a that was in my purple car.  You want the old one?

I need the rev limiter model due to eratic feet.   ;D
