I have a 69 Charger with a 440 in it, Last year was my first year with it after a fresh rebuild..I am running 3:91's and personally don't like them since it is more a cruiser not a racer. I want to be able to get it out on the highway without rapping things out so badly but I still want some punch out of the gate, What do you guys recommend putting in him without sacrificing performance. The tranny has a 1500 stall and here are the cam specs....
                     Intake   Exhaust
Gross Valve lift .488      .491
Duration at .006 Tappet lift 274    .286
valve Timing    Open    Close
at  .006 Int     31 BTDC   63 ABDC
          EXH      77 BBDC   29 ATDC
These specs are for cam installed
at 106 intake center line

                                     Intake     Exhaust
Duration at .50                  230        236
Lobe Lift                           .3250     .3270
lobe seperation                 110.0

Any help would be awesome....

Thanks

I am guessing 3.23 gears....      but...    what do i know ?

With 230/236 duration @ 0.050 you have a pretty big cam in there. First, I think you have too low of a stall converter. One above 2500rpm would probably work much better with that cam. As far as gears go that camshaft will work best with the 3.91's you already have and a higher stall converter. I would definately not go below 3.55's or it will be a dog off the line.

If you just want a good street car you might want to pull that cam for something around 220 duration @ 0.050 and then you could get by with your stall converter and 3.23 gears for highway cruising. I don't know what you are expecting but, 3.23's will run approximately 2500 rpm at 60-65 mph depending on your tire size.

i have roughly the same setup-69 charger, 83/4 suregrip, 440, hedders, mild cam, 750 cfm eddy carb, stock stall converter, 28" tires (275 r15 60), eddy dual plane intake.  i run 3.23 gears, they are great, not to revvy on the highway, about 2800rpm at 70mph, still launches hard, still easy to lite up the tires eaisly.  but depending on what carb you have, you probally will have bog off idle, but i fixed it in my car by changing to harder springs, and smaller metering rods.  a big heavy car like a charger also likes timing to come in early, all mech advance in by at least 2500rpm.  otherwise they are a awesome all round crusing gear.  but they still launch hard. :icon_smile_big:
