Early 68 dual snorkel air cleaner - which one?

It's my understanding that my January 68 Charger would have come equipped with a dual snorkel, silenced air cleaner (if it had come with a 4bbl). It originally came with a 2bbl and a single snorkel air cleaner but it's not going back on. Trouble is I see two different types of the dual snorkel air cleaners so I need your help. Which one is right? You've got your straight/round (which I'm leaning toward) and your tapered/flat:

If it makes any difference to you, I don't think a pie plate will fit on top of the one in the first pic.  It looks like the one that came on my 67 and I'm not sure it was original to the 67 but an engine callout plate won't fit in it.

That seems to be the story, according to the Nick's Garage link Mopar Nut left above. I don't care much about a pie tin but it seems either air cleaner would be correct, or should I say not incorrect.

Also, according to Nick's Garage, the air cleaners with the breather nipples are taller than those without them. :scratchchin:

To the best of my knowledge 67 383 4bbl was the last year they used the round snorkle.
Oval and shorter if it is a stock 383/440 or longer if it is HP.  My  :Twocents:

But many parts from '67 spilled over into early '68.

i'm no expert  , my thinking on this is

first picture below  is the one you want ,
the second picture is a 67 one , very much doubt that would of been fitted because there is no breather pipe nipple &  that was a new thing in 68 i believe pcv valve  closed crank case vent set up ,
& in 67 they had duel open breathers ? :scratchchin:
the first picture you posted shows a twin snorkel , with round snorkels  , pretty sure thats 66 & earlier , although 318 &  383 2 barrel motors had that one , well  in single snorkle form ,  in 68 & 69 too i think :scratchchin:
have seen  / read about  early 68s   , that supposedly come with  the large 67  unsilenced air cleaner ,  but that had a breather nipple on it , so must of come from a 68 - 383 /440 A body :-\

Yes, some of the tapered flat snorkel air cleaners (as pictured above) do come with the breather pipe fitting. So you think that's probably correct?

the tips of the snorkel were really close IMO to the inner hood frame  :scratchchin:

According to my research, the very first pic you posted is what a 383 4bbl car came with.  That's the one I'd go with.

bull

It might come down to whatever I can find for less than $200.

Mopar Nut

Isn't the 68 dual snorkel air cleaner the same on a Charger 383 HP and a Polara 383 HP? If it is, you can find Polara's in junkyards still, not like a Charger.

I just found one like you posted above with the flatter snorkels.

Dans 68

I don't believe that there was a wiper motor clearance "notch" built into the '68 Charger dual snorkel air cleaner.  :scratchchin:  I'll check my info when I get back to the Ranch....

Are you talking about the last pic, Dan? I see the notch you're referring to in the one above but they've all got clearance modifications of some sort.

Dans 68

Nope, I checked all my references and the photo is fine - the wiper motor notch is there. My mistake. But I think the finish on the dual snorkel air cleaner you showed is not correct. It should be a smooth black finish. As I'm in the middle of a move all my reference books are tucked away nicely in boxes, probably going to suffer the same fate as the Lost Ark of the Covenant. Here is a photo of a properly fitted dual snorkel air cleaner, imho.  :Twocents:

Dan

Edit - the air cleaner should also have the word "FRONT" on the front. Again, imho.

So does the air cleaner in the pic above have the flat or really flat snorkels?

Dans 68

I'd have to say flat. They are oval at the ends. Here is a photo of an Oct 11 1967 build date dual snorkel Dodge Charger for another perspective.

had a flash back !!  when i said the twin snorkle i had ( 68 ) was really close to the inner hood frame  , well  cant see it ,  being a problem with a 383  , unless you got some kind of torka intake etc  cause the 440 block  is taller than the 383 , not sure by how much though ,   1/2"  :shruggy: :scratchchin:
