Title: TALLADEGA '09 THREAD
Post by: pettybird on April 18, 2008, 10:15:13 PM
I'm bored, and there have been more than a few people saying that this should be started...  16-month sticky FTW!!!

THIS IS THE ULTIMATE DEADLINE FOR YOUR CARS.  Do NOT miss this!

Who's going, in what, and what needs to be finished?

I'm planning on taking the Petty 'bird as the B5 car's been there twice now.   My car runs fine but it's really never been apart, so I'm hoping to do a mechanical rebuild beforehand.

My friend Steve Kay is planning on taking his B5/white 440/4speed 'bird as he's taken his Q5 'tona those same two times.

I'm going.. :yesnod:  I'm so ready to start a resto on my C500 this summer to get it ready for next summer but i know that a one year project can turn into 5 or 10 so i'm a little leary to start.  Maybe one more car show with the hillside hemi is the best move.  No, at any situation, i will make sure i get there.
My spouse has relatives in Atlanta, so she will be flying down and we will spend a week there.

Count me in. Odds are that it won't fall on the same weekend as it did in '04. That I couldn't make it to as it was my son's 1st birthday. Although if it does, I don't think he would argue about going for his birthday as long as some T5 bronze 500's show up. He seems to be in love with those.

I've been planning everything related to my Daytona's restoration around this particular show since before the 2004 reunion.  I even started the resto on my car in 2006 just to make sure that I had plenty of time to get EVERYTHING done and sorted out before Oct '09.  If it makes any other event prior to that, fine.  Talladega is the drop-dead date though.  The wife and family have been given 7 year's notice as well   :P

This should be a fun event, with as many DC.com folks as are planning to be there.

Oh, and this thread is definitely forum-sticky material...

Looking forward to seeing Gene's Daytona once its completed, and hopefully its done long before the Talladega meet next year. I'm hoping to get to shoot tons of photo's of it this year at some point once its done and painted. Who knows maybe Troy will be rolling to the Talladega meet in a Wing car too, hopefully that is, if not I'm sure I'll drool all over Dana too.

Haven't been back there since 93 or 94.  What exact dates are we talking about.  It may be impossible to bring a car if it's during the school year as I can't take that much time off during class time.

Count me in, I went for the first time in 1994 and had a blast. I didn't even have my Daytona done then and still enjoyed the heck out of it. Of course thanks to Troy I was ale to cruise with them at Dega in Dana, so that made it that much more special. Hope to see all of you Aero-Car fans out there. :2thumbs:

I definately plan on going.  It will actually be my first wing car show at Talladega.  I think it will be awesome.  I am currently restoring the 'Bird that belongs to my boss.  I told him about the show and I think he plans to go also.  Hopefully I will have his car finished in time to attend the show.  You can watch the restoration here.... http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,43102.0.html

If it's monetarily possible since I can't get time off from teaching to tow the C500 out there, I may have the car shipped and then fly out to the hotel in Birmingham.  Do we have a firm date(s) yet?  Since my car has never been east of the Mississippi River it would be a lot of fun to get it out there and let it stretch its legs on the way to the track!

My wife showed me something yesterday..... On one of her HGTV shows on hidden treasures, or something like that, what do I see?????  a panther pink  '70 Charger R/T driving up the driveway..... Well, it's Tim Wellborn's v-code '70 and the hidden treasures house is his !!!!! It was cool seeing it since I visited it back in '05........  But, they didn't go into the "hidden" treasures of his garage....   :icon_smile_big:

Looks like the race will be on November 1st...

QuoteAug 19, 3:21 PM (ET)

By MIKE HARRIS
Ladies and gentlemen, rearrange your calendars!

Three NASCAR tracks will swap dates on the 2009 Sprint Cup schedule released Tuesday.

Atlanta Motor Speedway will move its fall race from October to Labor Day weekend, with Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., giving up that date to move into the Chase for the championship and Talladega Superspeedway moving its second race nearer the end of the season.

Atlanta will run a Cup race at night for the first time on Sept. 6. The second race at Auto Club Speedway will be run Oct. 11, in Talladega's former slot, while the Alabama track will hold its second race of the season Nov. 1, on the date formerly held by Atlanta. All three tracks also have Cup races in the first half of the schedule.

There also will be an additional off-week for the Cup teams before the Labor Day weekend event, giving them a break before a 12-week stretch that will end the season. The 2008 schedule ends with 16 consecutive weeks of racing.

Otherwise, the 36-race Cup schedule for next year will remain the same as this season.

"The 2009 schedule reflects realigned dates that are good opportunities for everyone involved in our sport - fans, sponsors, tracks and teams," NASCAR president Mike Helton said.

He said requests from Auto Club Speedway and Atlanta initiated the changes in the Cup schedule.

Auto Club Speedway - formerly California Speedway - officials have been talking to NASCAR for several years about getting away from a date that doesn't draw well in Southern California, where there a multitude of things to do on a holiday weekend, and is typically very hot. Last September, the Sunday night race began in temperatures approaching 106 degrees.

"The 2009 schedule is a victory for race fans," said Gillian Zucker, president of Auto Club Speedway. "From a weather standpoint, I can hardly think of a better time to visit California than early October. ... (and) we look forward to being part of the championship puzzle."

For Atlanta, the switch offers the chance to move to the traditional end-of-summer date and run under the lights.

"We've been desiring a night race in Atlanta for a number of years. We've had a number of conversations and I'm sure Mike Helton can tell you about that," said Ed Clark, president of the Atlanta track. "We're bringing Labor Day racing back to the Southeast and doing it with a nighttime event. ... It's a win-win-win situation for everybody."

Before the track in California got the Labor Day date in 2004, Darlington Raceway held the Southern 500 each year on the holiday weekend. The South Carolina track now has one Cup date in May.

Rick Humphrey, president of Talladega, said the attraction for him was moving from the fourth to seventh race in the 10-race Chase.

"We've been a big part of the championship battle and we believe that moving even deeper into the Chase makes Talladega even more significant to the championship," Humphrey said. "Also, by moving to the end of October, coupled with Atlanta's new date, that separates our two events, which is very beneficial for both parties."

The Atlanta and Talladega tracks are only about 100 miles apart.

Schedules for the Nationwide Series and the truck series, which is still awaiting a new series sponsors to replace Craftsman, were also released Tuesday.

A new event at Iowa Speedway on Aug. 1 will replace Mexico City on the 35-race Nationwide schedule, while the Atlanta event will switch from March to September, moving the race in Montreal to Aug. 30.

The Nationwide race is a coup for the 2-year-old Iowa track.

Former NASCAR star Rusty Wallace, the designer and co-owner of the track, said he believes the new race could draw as many as 70,000 fans. The problem is, the track has only 25,000 permanent seats and it's biggest crowd to date was the nearly 40,000 it drew for the IndyCar Series race in June.

"Seating is a real hot topic right now," Wallace said. "We're going to have to add seats."

In trucks, the 25-race 2009 schedule will replace the late-season event at Atlanta with a night race at Chicagoland Speedway on Aug. 28, giving the series another major market.

Good thing for me that the date did move from the first week in october to November though. Considering my kids b-day is October 2nd, and the anniversary is October 5th, and neice's b-day is October 6th, kind of puts some kinks in the family time with leaving for that week. But if its going to be November 1st, ALL IS WELL in the Liebrandt household.  :2thumbs: Putting in my vacation time for that week today at work.

going by previous rules you're welcome everywhere but the parade lap and the group photo.  no one's gonna stop you from coming down--there's going to be a quarter million others there for the race, and there's always an extra seat for the parade lap ;)

heck we took a car and I rode with 70Sbird last time!

Cool, the parade lap is the biggie because ,well, I don't need to tell anyone here do I?  Now, if I want to drive something on the parade lap that doesn't leave me a whole lot of time to win the lottery. (since that is likely the only way I'll be scoring an aero car within the next year)

A couple of friends from New York flew down and hitched rides--that's who Mom drove around while I was with Scott.

in '99 my sis rode with my friend Steve Kay in his Daytona--

as long as there's a seat I don't think you'll have a problem!

Alex City is abut 1hr south of the racetrack. The ride from there to the track pretty cool as well.

Yep, it's about 60 miles from the hotels north to the track, but it's an easy ride on low travel two lanes through some beautiful countryside skirting the Talladega Mountains.     It's a more pleasant ride than fighting the race traffic when we used to come from Birmingham.

So i just did another google maps on how to get there from here and it looks like my half way point is St. Louis.  Anyone going thru St. Louis on there way there?  I could meet up with someone and continue driving there in tandem.  I would probably be doing my 1st leg one day, staying the night in St. Loius (maybe i can park at the Mopad), then the second leg the next day.  I'll be staying in Atlanta with relatives of my spouse, she is flying down and i will meet her there.

Going to St Louis seems a long way out of the way.

I'd look at taking I-94 to Madison WI, and take the short jump on I-90 to I-39 at Rockford.  I-39 shoots straight south to Bloomington/Normal and is a nice road with relatively low traffic.   Then take I-74 east towards Indy.   There's bound to be some central IL folks you can hook up with.

The google maps route (from my house to Atlanta) gave me that one (1,144 miles), and the mapquest route gave me the St. Louis one (1,120 miles).  I've driven that 94 stretch from here to Milwaukee about 1 million times and would just like to putz along thru Iowa for something different.  But if there are FIB members to hook up with along the way that would be better to have someone to caravan with.  thanks Doug.

Ouch...

Somehow I'll be heading through St. Louis, as there's really not a good way to get to any South/Southeast-bound interstates from where I live.  I plan to be trailering the car though, considering how fresh the restoration will be next year (assuming it gets done by then!).

Just watch - it'll be my 2007 truck that breaks down...     :rotz:

Ahh. I hadn't realized you were in Indy.

I will be over there Wed. and Thurs. working at the ProMax Carbs and Performance shop (30 Gasoline alley) assembling/dyno'ing a stroker motor. I was supposed to get there today, but got too busy at work. If the weather is nice there is usually a small cruise at the shop on Wed. Evening.

I work over there anytime I'm slow, and for all the trade shows they setup at.

I have been spending enough time over there I was thinking of joining the Indy Mopar Club, but haven't yet.

I am trying to get my buddy to let me take one of his 3 birds down!

If your back over here, feel free to give a jingle or stop by. We don't do much during the fall, and honestly the car hasn't even been out of the garage since Carlisle.

I "want" to drive my car the whole way just to say i did it, but common sense tells me i should trailer it also.   :shruggy:  If i can get the 440 5-speed in and running great i would like to drive it.  But if i dont and the /6 stays in it, then i would not trust it that far.  I'm going to do my best to get the 440 in though.

Hi Gary,

The track will have a block of tickets set up for us, and a 800 number to call to get them.  So for now do not worry about that.   Hotel info is still coming.  There is no problem.    Hold tight for now and mark the dates.

Here's an updated event schedule of what's going on.

The dates are October 28th through November 1st.     The event base is in Alexander City Alabama, about an hour south of the Talladega race track.    Tim and Pam Wellborn will be our hosts.

Wednesday – October 28th – Arrival day

Thursday – October 29th – The event formally kicks off in the afternoon at Russwood, the home of Tim and Pam Wellborn.    Cars will be gathered around the house and grounds for a relaxing day of camaraderie as in 2004.     A picnic style dinner will be served.    This was the highlight of the 2004 event and is the photo shown below.   The house is a replica of Mount Vernon built in 1936 by the founders of Russell Athletic.   It had fallen into disrepair and has been beautifully restored by Tim and Pam.

Friday – October 30th -  We will gather mid-morning at the Wellborn Museum with special guest Dennis Gage of "My Classic Car".  Tim has refurbished an older car dealership into a 1970 Chrysler dealership.  If you were there in 2004, this is the building next to the Sonic drive in.    We will display the cars all around the building.      For the ladies, there will be a shopping expedition.   Noted artists David Snyder and Michael Irvine will also be at the event.

Saturday – October 31st – We will shift gears to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at Talladega.
Cars will display outside the museum and we will take the panoramic photo as in years past.
Event guests and drivers roundtable in the museum.
Return to Alexander City in the evening.

Sunday – November 1st -  Parade Lap before the Amp Energy Talladega 500 Sprint Cup race.

Hotel info will be forthcoming and will be based in Alexander City.    There is a brand new hotel opening up, but as I write you today on February 7th, their staff is not in place yet.  So hold tight on reservations.   There will be plenty of rooms in the area.   I will be sending out a special notice on hotels to you as soon as I receive it.

Race Tickets:  there will once again be a special block of race tickets available on the backstretch where we were in 2004.   Info from the track is forthcoming.

Can't wait!  I've never been to a Nascar race before, would have been nice if the long rumored track in the NW would get built.  Getting an alignment done on my 500 today then it should be about ready to go, just need to get some miles on it.  Will be doing a test run to Mopars at the Strip or Spring Fling in Van Nuys this Spring.  Will I get long distance?

Looks like a really nice ride. Nice set up too with it being a HEMI with those nice highway gears. Would make for a sweet ride to just cruise down the interstate. I'm hoping to get the set of 2.76 gears into my C500 before Talladega. Was hoping to do it before winter last year, but seems that everytime I make plans to work on my own car something comes up.

Stuart here is a little know fact about going 170+ mph in a daytona--somewhere above 160 the passenger side wiper arm blew completely off and the rear tires started smoking due to the down force of the wing and the tires are 10 in. wide which does NOT clear the top of the inner rear fender. I pins through the wiper arms/shaft and air shocks on th axle.

I am friends with the guys that come down from the NW, I really regret not going 5 years ago.  Right now it looks like my 500 SE and Garry Keay's six pack Bird are the only ones making the trip from the NW this time.  Should be four of us, two in each car.

Hey pettybird--nice cars  :yesnod: :yesnod: the wheels are the same as the real nascar teams use--AERO wheels--Summit Racing has them--they're only about $50 a wheel. I notice you have the stock front fenders--stay with 15x8 for turning clearance. My front fenders are not stock--I run 15x10 all the way around with 275/60 tires.

Its back on the road, been trying to get some miles on it to get the bugs worked out.  I think the inaugural cruise will be to Williams Lake, BC, Memorial Day weekend.  Its a nice 800 mile round trip cruise instead of the 2500 mile trip to Spring Fling, so in case something goes wrong I can get it back home easier.  Thinking I'm going to take my 70 Charger down to Spring Fling, but we'll see.

Regarding hotels, it won't matter too much which one you stay at.   All the hotels will be packed, and most of the action will be over at Tim's house and museum.   We're only going to use the motels to sleep, LOL.

There is one other option I did not mention, which is the new Hampton Inn in Alex City.       When Pam Wellborn spoke to them, they were talking $139 and later on, came back to her with, "Oh, that's a race weekend, it will probably be more" .   We dropped the conversation at that point.   They are on Travelocity right now with a $179 rate for AAA.

It's just a blast to see so many Aero vehicles in one place! When I got there last time I was getting fuel at the Shell station down the road which was pay before you pump.. I went in to pay and the lady told me I could have paid afterwards because its not like I could get away driving a vehicle like that.. ;) about that time a yellow bird pulled in along with a blue one and even a dega' the lady just dropped her jaw!

We're in at the Best Western

(We had some customer service issues with The Jameson in '04.  Like they wouldn't give us a hose to wash the cars, and be sure to the first in line to check out early Sunday morning - when the entire place empties out at 4am the lone person at the front desk was a bit overwhelmed.)

And in the little breakfast room, if you used the waffle maker and the toaster at the same time it would trip the breaker.

I truly hope they have all of these issues worked out so everyone staying there has a pleasant time.

Question?

This will be my first Winged Warrior meet.

Is there some sort of welcoming committee or check-in info package when you arrive that has a schedule and directions?  Or does everyone meet in the parking lot and wing it from there?

I booked a room at the Jameson a night or two ago for Thursday through Sunday nights.  It surprised me that the rates went up that much for Fri-Sat. considering the distance to the Track.  Is this area like Bristol where there's not much around for an hour in any direction?  That might explain things...

Now that we're starting to make hotel plans, what about travelling plans?  Do we need to set up another thread for meeting up and/or travelling with people along the way?

Tentatively, I'd like to leave Wednesday afternoon, travel most of the way, and finish up the last couple hours of the drive Thursday morning.  I could adjust that schedule though, if a group of us wanted to travel together.  Have caffeine, will drive...

If we don't meet up at the hotel Friday morning, just follow over to Tim's museum and pick it up your packet.   There will be directions and signs.

As to registration, nobody is registered yet.   I will have that registration form in the May-June newsletter.  The March-April newsletter mailed out on Tuesday, so if you did not get the email edition, the smail mail copy should arrive in your mailbox today.

Sounds like it may be a good Idea to see who is coming from where, and when.
Dave K, you're leaving VERY early on Thursday, what route are you taking?
I'm planning on being up at 0 dark thirty on Thursday and driving down that day, trying to minimize driving in the dark, mostly to avoid deer and such (I hit two in the last two years traveling at night - luckily in rental cars!).
I figure if I get on the road at 4 - 5 AM  in central Illinois, I should be in Alexander city shortly after dark, remember the days will be shorter then and we set the clocks back on that Saturday night anyway. I'm planning on running South through Southern IL to I-24 to Nashville, then I-65 to Birmingham. I'd love to convoy if anyone is interested. At least we could share a list of cell phone numbers between folks coming from different regions in case one of us needs help or is trying to meet up with each other.
I'm getting excited just thinking about it!

We will mostly just head down I-65.  In '99 a bunch of us met up in Nashville for breakfast.  Maybe that would work out?  I would get there somwhere around 7 am.

I like the cell number exchange.  How do we do that without just posting them on here for every phisher to pull off and sell to telemarketers?

We do have Personal Message's here...send numbers in a PM

 Hi All,
it seems that Hagerty may be able to insure me for my trip!
The downside is that they require secure overnight parking if I drive from L.A. to the meet, I have to ship the car out of Florida, as the return trip to L.A. would be too many miles for them to cover me.
The question I am now asking myself is: would it be better to ship in and out of Florida and be able to drive to the meet in a day, saving the questions about overnight security? This option will also allow me to attend the Ocala show on the way home the following weekend.
Are there any board members travelling from Florida to the meet that I could travel with?
John

Awesome, that's great news John!
Is there a big price difference between shipping it to Florida vs. L.A.?
I can't imagine it's an inexpensive endeavor either way.
I'm curious.  Are you going through the Panama Canal or coming around Africa?
You are making one heck of an effort to be there, that's for sure!   :2thumbs:

I'm really looking forward to the event.... Just not sure if I will be able to make it all four days.  Saturday for sure I will be there and possibly Friday.  If I plan on going to the track on Sunday, do you still have to buy a ticket just to drive the car around and then leave??  I don't plan on staying for the race.  Just trying to watch money... don't really need to spend a lot.

The track has an $80 ticket package that gives you Saturday museum admission, Saturday lunch and truck race and the Sunday race ticket.    They have come back to us and asked for each car doing the parade lap to have a race ticket.    I read that as one race ticket will make them happy.   Even if you have to head home, stay if you can and watch the opening laps.

Sat. night is an open night but since Sunday is such an early start to the track you need all the rest you can get, last time a bunch of people went down to the Sonic for a self made cruise in.

What a trip! I'm never likely to do anything like it again. It was good to meet a few of the members here and put some faces to the names.
I must say a special thank you to; Joe, Sean, Dan, Dave, Gary, Dick, Jason, Dewey, Gary and Bill, you were the best bunch of people to be travelling with!  I apologise to those that were following me and got covered in an oil film, but that was fixed, I still haven't fixed the rear lights, Gary! :brickwall:
We have made it to Daytona Beach, funnily enough we are not using much oil at all now, perhaps it's because we are cruising at 60 rather than those higher speeds  :icon_smile_big:
Just taking it easy for a few days before the Ocala show, and then we head back West to L.A.
Thanks again
John and Derek

It was great meeting everyone!  :2thumbs:

Sorry that I was such a drama queen.   I saw my doctor today and he's gonna run a bunch of tests to determine if I did have an episode or not.

Despite that I had an amazing experience bench racing with everyone and listening to all the stories.  There is so much information accumulated about these unique cars with everyone that it was "sensory overload".  And how cool was it talking to those people that were there and experienced it back in the day?  I swear, I could have stayed there for weeks and listened to them until they lost their voices.

And kudos to the Wellborn's for being such gracious hosts and showing off the most awesome Mopar collection I've ever seen.  I'm still trying to soak in everything I saw.

If I have any complaint it would be the parade lap.  That was incredibly boring cruising around Nascar's fastest track at 35 mph  :brickwall:  When I went to Texas Motor Speedway I was able to hit 150 down the backstretch and I heard that the Mopar Nationals in St. Louis lets groups go out according to how fast they want to go.  If Tim Wellborn has any pull out there maybe he can get us up to a speed that we could at least climb up on the banking next time.  It's ridiculous to drive around at a speed I use to find a parking place at the mall.  Yeah, I know that the Nascar officials are a bunch of jerks.  Maybe they're afraid of us because we don't have restrictor plates slowing us down, huh?   :nana:

wow 35 mph you got to go fast other years have only been 20mph.

The fact that your tires touched the track is the fact that Tim does have pull other wise it would not have happened at all.

Monster Mopar at St. Louis are laps at 50-60 mph now........because of legal issues and people that did not obey the rules when they used to tell us to not pass the pace truck.

The fact that the cars are allowed on the track is a privilege allowed to us, and we need to remember to appreciate what we get to do and respect the rules of the events so that the opportunities do not go away.......St. Louis is watched closely every year by track owners and I am sure that other events are also.

Hope your tests come back ok.

When we were there in '99, some asked why we were not allowed on the high banks...answer was that our carbs were not "correct" for the track...something about the floats not shutting off the needle & seat inside the carb and allowing it to flood over when on the high turns

Scott,  thank you so much for picking me up at the hospital and then taking me back to the hotel to get my Petty outfit for the Halloween Party.  I really appreciated the way you and the guys went out of your way to help me.  Troy, a special thanks to you for being my "wingman" and keeping the wife informed.  It was awesome to meet you all!

And to answer your comment about turning down the opportunity to drive your car....first off, I was shocked that you offered and was so taken aback my first thought was, no, I really shouldn't. Secondly, if something would have happened and I damaged your beautiful car you would have had to take me back to the hospital but this time to the morgue!  :slap:  Maybe next time if you're feeling generous again, okay?

****

As far as having the "privilege to parade at the track".  I don't see it that way.  I'd rather leave my car in the garage instead and take it out when I can at least run her up to 70 mph legally on any highway in America.  I don't know about your car, but mine doesn't even wake up until it hits 50 mph and those slow parade laps threaten to overheat these small fresh air intakes on these cars.  I don't understand how Doug was able to keep the Ramo Stott car going that slow. I heard Charlie Glotzbach say that he'll burn out the clutch unless he changes out the rear end gears going that slow.  Just my 2 cents.

A 100 cars at 100 mph,,,what a mess,,,,,, enough said--

The parade lap at Talladega is painfully slow.  Yes, it is way too slow.   Having said that, there are a bunch of reasons it is that way.   In 1988, we had a car get up on the banking a little and catch fire.  It was extinguished with no significant damage.  In 1999, we had a Daytona lose a wheel (!) and the errant wheel hit another car.

As to Monster Mopar, they put you out with a pace truck at 60 mph.   But there is no unlimited running or anything like that.    It is also on a non-race weekend so they do not have the crowd control issues with spectators crossing from the tri oval grandstands to the pits like Talladega.    At Talladega, we are lucky the track lets us do what we do, and they did try to put us out there a little later this time so more people would see it.

The other new wrinkle that I am sure most are not aware of, is that most collector car policies now have an no-coverage exclusion for any kind of on-track event.   It used to be that timed racing events were prohibited, but "non-competitive lapping days", or "driver education" events were allowed.   Well the insurance companies have now closed that loophole by saying that any time you are on the track surface, you are not covered.    My interpretation of this is that a claim resulting from an accident that occurs on the track has potential to be easily denied, even if it is a parade lap.

I went in to get an MRI of my brain yesterday. They'll find out for sure if that saying "In space, no one can hear you scream" is true or not!  Today I'm scheduled to get the carotid ultrasound that the surgeon that was sitting with Dan Kanofsky (sorry, I've forgotten his name) advised me to get ASAP and my doctor agreed with him.

Oh yeah Doug,  now that you mention it...when we were trying to get temporary insurance on John's Daytona when he was coming over from New Zealand they freaked out over the idea that we would be taking a Parade Lap, even if it was at a slow pace.  Just the fact that we were going to be "on" the race track was an issue.  If I remember correctly John had to forget to mention that we were doing that parade lap and take his chances.

I guess that I shouldn't bitch about taking a slow lap anyway.  I was lucky to show up with a running car at all, much less one that could run at any speed.  I probably would have been the one that caught on fire after a wheel fell off the way that my luck was running, huh?  Then you guys would have really had something to talk about!

When they have the Good Guys show at Kansas Speedway they let like 20 cars out on the track at a time and we run 3 laps. We get to go like 60 or 70 unless you lag back then Hammer it.

Yeah, that's where I was when I hit 150mph, at a Goodguys show in Fort Worth (Texas Motor Speedway) cruising behind a car club buddy's GTO when a lime green '57 Cadillac with a blower sticking out of the hood blasted by us like we were standing still.  How he made it through turn three without crashing I'll never know, but it sure was cool!   :2thumbs:

Speaking of my car club buddy with the GTO, he just called me yesterday from the SEMA show in Vegas and as he was getting Richard Petty's autograph he told him that just a few days ago he was loading up a Petty car on his car hauler (the one I borrowed) and watched it go to Talladega.  He stopped and stared at him for a second and then asked him "Do you mean that guy from Texas that has my Superbird?"  Funny, he still calls it "his car"!  At least he still remembers me!!  :icon_smile_big:

Yep, the insurance company were quite specific, if I went on the track I wouldn't be covered.
Had a bit of bad luck in Ocala, the oil pump seized and sheared the shaft, luckily it was as we were pulling out of one of the host hotels. a 2nd hand pump and shaft were obtained from one of the vendors at the show who pulled them off a complete engine and didn't want any payment. I'll see him in the morning to offer my profuse thanks!
An early start tomorrow crawling under the car, hopefully it will all go together without too much trouble and then on to the show.
Thanks again to all those that have helped

Hello John,  We made it back to CA Wed Night.    The broken drive gear is a common issue.  They brake inside the pump.  Culprit is the brass bushing up near the cam shaft under the gear.  You will have to pull the pump.  The pump is easy to pull on your car.  They do make drive gears with hardend tips.   Is Derek still with you?

Wow John, a seized oil pump as you're leaving the hotel.  Is that something that would have wasted the motor at highway speed?  If so, that was lucky.  I hope that the rest of your trip is trouble free.

Question about photos....did anyone take photos of the Halloween costumes?  My wife wants to see how the Petty racing uniform that she made for me came out.  I stupidly didn't have someone use my camera to snap a shot although I know that I posed for several other people.  I'll post this in the other Talladega threads to see if anyone has one.

Actually, I wore it at the Talladega Museum the next day when it was cold & raining and found out the hard way some of those patches she made for the uniform weren't colorfast.  That was a shame because I thought they looked great.  If someone has a shot I'll post it up here.  What was amazing was Tim Wellborn's museum had some real vintage uniforms on display and it looked just like them.  For a budget costume I was really proud of what she did.

Here's an updated event schedule of what's going on.

Wednesday – October 28th – Arrival day

Thursday – October 29th –

Friday – October 30th -  We will gather mid-morning at the Wellborn Museum with special guest Dennis Gage of "My Classic Car".  Tim has refurbished an older car dealership into a 1970 Chrysler dealership.

Saturday – October 31st –

Hey Guys,

I was watching an episode of "My Classic Car" with Dennis Gage today and it got me to thinking that I thought he was scheduled to be at the Talladega meet.  So, I went back in the thread and sure enough I found it mentioned in the edited post above.
Was he there and I missed him?
