Title: NICE SUPERBIRD CLONE ON EBAY . HIT THE RESERVE ALREADY
Post by: BigBlockSam on January 13, 2012, 06:26:08 PM
Hi guys

check this car out . that's kind of a lot of money for this car, isn't it ?  that rear wing looks kinda tall . maybe if it had a 440 in it but it's got a 383 . i figured 28k but it keeps going up . sorry firefox won't let me save any pics but here's the link.

Same seller as that red Daytona clone recently.

Wing appears to be a little too far forward.

:shruggy:.  The door gaps and fender alignment looks good in the pics. looks like it has a rollbar in it. That would scare me, probaly been down the track allot. Just remember pictures are deceiving unless you look at it in person its a gamble, especially at that price. Also who knows whats under the paint. I have seen body men that I do not know if i should shake there hand for sculpting all the bondo as an artist, or hit them in the chin for being stupid.

I like how all his ads state he's always selling it for his "friend" ;).......so when the disillusioned buyer reallizes what he really got in the deal (another carved car) :slap:....he can take it up with the "friend".....nice

ok, im no wing car expert. but wouldnt this be a good way for someone to break into the aero world for cheap? of course we dont know what is going on underneath. but i see what you guys quote on pieces to put one of these together from a RR. and we know what a real one costs.whoever gets it could slowly correct anything wrong, but cruise that thing and have fun at the same time. :shruggy:

how does a clone, no matter how nicely done, equate to "breaking into the aero world" ?

there is a bit of difference between owning a clone versus owning an aero car, wouldn't you agree? clones may be invited to an event, but it's a stretch to equate that with buying one's way into a hypothetical "world" with a pretend car.

i've never come across an aero car owner with a sense of entitlement like is implied by the gucci/hamptons reference, but the same cannot be said for a few of the clones. why is that?

ok, well lucky for me i dont own either. and if i were lucky enough to own one and was told my pretend car had to park in the alley so the real cars could get their due, id find a more fun bunch to run with. :2thumbs:

For me owning mine will be about 90K less difference and a personal feeling knowing that I built it instead of just buying it.  I'll complete it to the best of my ability and doesn't matter who will snub it, I only have to please my own tastes and at the end of the day, as long as I'm satisfied with it, I'm happy.  I would have liked to have been fortunate enough to own an original off the lot Birdy or Tona, but I'm not.  I won't pretend or pass it off as a real deal or even expect anyone to accept it as a close clone because it won't be. It's a lot of work to build one only to have it look like everyone else but that's just me; I like different.  I have come into acquaintance with both cloners and real wing car owners here and all have been a positive influence or help for me and the hobby  and doubt anyone would want to kick me off the car show pavement because I had a "pretend car".  I like them all, although some more than others, either real, fake, pretend, clone, tribute, or whatever one chooses to call theirs.

:yesnod: well said, no haters here. real wing car owners should take it as a compliment when you see a clone . we loved your car so much but couldn't afford one . so we had to build our own.

i remember the first time i seen a superbird ,i was 13 and it took my breath away . i've been chasing one ever since.

when i completed the transformation of my car  into a daytona. me and my wife stood on the porch looking at it . we both had tears in or eye's. it was a long hard road to build my pretend car .

my earlier post asked a simple question, in response to the comment that i quoted in that post. that comment specifically mentioned "buying into the aero car world on the cheap".

buying into this mythical world seems like it might require actually purchasing an aero car, although the implication was the purchase of this clone makes one an aero car owner. i still do not understand that connection. cubic zirconia is not the same thing as a diamond. if it is, why bother putting a diamond on the wife's finger. she should look at a cubic zirconia ring as a "compliment".

my disdain for clones of any make or model is no secret, although there was no clone bashing implied in the earlier question. that my personal opinion is offensive enough to unite the clone camp only bolsters the comment regarding their insistence on entitlement, more so than any aero owner i know. that said, i'm finished throwing gas on the fire. feel free to have the last word, and we can then agree to disagree on the concept.

"buying ones self in to the aero world".........i only know 2 ways to get in and i dont see too many people giving these cars away. so how else do you get in? there are mopar clubs where the wings belong, and there are wing clubs, which only wing cars belong. ala "aero world". sorry if i labeled it improperly. the car in question is a (dare i say it) "CLONE". but to some who want to drive a winged warrior and cant afford huge money,a great alternative. ala "cheap buy in" compared to an original.i just made an error in thinking that these guys that have the clones were excepted by the real wing owners into the group. heck, i even seen them park together at monster mopar.

I find that the mopar community and the wing car owners are very accepting of my car and treat me no different than any other aero car owner .
That being said there are always a few who dont .   I offer no appologies its my car , my dream , I build it the way I wanted  it . Sure i would love to have a real wing , but that never came to pass . I'm sure i will have a real wing one day but I will always love the birdible just as much .  To much fun and great memoires in it already and many more to come .   :Twocents:

Ive never seen a clone car in person, I really dont know how many there are but it seems like less because of the WWW.

I have always been asked if my car was "real" which I always thought to be funny since I started hearing it around 1986. I never heard of a clone back then.  :shruggy:

also , i've met a lot of great people that are wing car owners . made some great friends and have been having a lots of fun . many people went out of there way to explain how some things worked on wing cars . like the lights . i was so confused on mounting my nose and getting the lights operating.

that to me is what it's all about loving these cars and great people . i hate no car.

emotional attachment causes a misplaced bearing on value when a seller unconsciously/consciously adds sentiment into a sale price, or worth.

Wing Car collectors can be real pissers at times when it comes to impressing people with the originality, uniqueness, and enviability of THEIR car....

"Mine still has the original air in the tires"

"I have the original paperwork from when the assembly line tech went to the bathroom"

"That sealed jar on the back decklid has the original exhaust fumes from when it first started"

"My build sheet was actually rolled up and used to roll joints with in 1970, but I managed to rescue the ashes and I've spent 40 years piecing it back together one ash piece at a time."

"My car has minus 2,700 original miles, because I drove it backwards from the day I got it"

"I've got a correctly date coded traffic ticket for parking too close to a fire hydrant because the nose overhung the parking space line."

............ disdain for clones of any make or model ...............

LOTS HATE AND STRESS OVER A FEW WORDS,,DONT YOU THINK?WHAT IF SOME ONE TOOK A REAL DAYTONA ?AND MADE A HALF BREED CLONE OF A REAL CHARGER? DAYTONA ASS, AND VIN WITH CHARGER NOSE?

i have no clue what the hell the first part of that statement means. am i stressed? no, why would you think so? do i hate the idea of a cloned muscle car? absolutely. clone a daytona into a "half-breed charger"? impossible, it's already a charger. the opposite action, magically turning a charger into a daytona, is also impossible. a base camaro is forever just a camaro, it will never be a z/28 or SS.  a base mustang will never become a shelby or boss model. a satellite, never a roadrunner, nor will a coronet 440 become a super bee. my disdain for clones is not aero-specific. it's fraud, no matter the reasoning. per merriam-webster:

fraud
noun \ˈfrȯd\
Definition of FRAUD
1 a: deceit, trickery; specifically: intentional perversion of truth in order to induce another to part with something of value or to surrender a legal right
b: an act of deceiving or misrepresenting : trick
2 a: a person who is not what he or she pretends to be : impostor; also: one who defrauds : cheat
b: one that is not what it seems or is represented to be

clones are like a girl wearing a strap-on. both may look the part, but neither is what it so badly wants to be. there was once a time when people did without the things they could not afford, or settled for what they could. not anymore. today it's "i can't afford what i want, so i will just pretend i have it, and expect everyone else to agree that it's ok". well, not everyone does.

i thought you were done and man your long winded and negative . you sound like a ball of fun

fraud, yes, if someone is trying to sell it for what it is not . if someone is just enjoying it for it's look and performance. i find nothing wrong with that . it's just fun . you do remember what fun and light hearted-ness is don't you .

The "clone" debate will always rage on, whether it be about artwork, antiques, cars etc, etc,....IMHO it boils down to those who let mystique, emotion, elitist attitude, etc that want claim to owning or possessing an individual uniqueness,.....those who want cloned items seek a desire also, yes some want bragging rites among the above mentioned elite, some just the desire to have whats denied them because of their financial restrictions,.....and then there's the ones that see no sense in spending wasted money on something that can be had at a substantially reduced price by building/buying a clone,...plus it's tailored to one's liking, rather than settling for "less"

The "purists" will always look down on the "cloned", because it dilutes their sense of entitlement sub consciously, or consciously....now I can see a purist having issues if a clone is poorly done, and reflects badly, I have issues with any vehicle done poorly, "original" or not

Personally when I clone a vehicle, and I've done many over the decades for myself and customers, it's for the desire to own/build/create that particular vehicle because it appeals to me/them, like many others do, or create a vehicle that never existed before...cloning allows one to have their cake and eat it too...something which is hard for the "purists" to swallow, or perhaps fathom

Some are allured or trapped by the so-called "historical value" of a vehicle, and feel it should be left "untouched",...in my practice, I've "destroyed" countless vehicles by parting them out (hundreds over the decades) or cloning them into other marques,.... base models, V codes, U codes meant/mean nothing...again my opinion they're just machines to modify to suite ones taste/desire

This is definitely a case of the have-nots putting thoughts into the minds of the haves.

I have Porsche 944's, including a Turbo S.  I have one for a DD/winter car with snow tires on it--I really do live the motto "Porsche everyday."  The Turbo S is a rocket, and was one of the fastest, best handling cars of its era.  It's widely overlooked, though, because it's not a 911.  I absolutely love the cars, especially the turbo.

That said, 944 people can be annoying.  it's like they're stuck with the automotive equivalent of short guy syndrome.  Best part?  911 people don't care OR look down on them.  It's all perception from the bottom up.

Dave, Just what Brian said,..".he has a clone and enjoys it",...thus,.. he has his "cake" and "eats' it too....old say'in, maybe before your time?

The comparison I was making, is with most guys holding out for an "original" either they're waiting for the "right" car to surface, or waiting to build the cash reserve, and they sometimes settle for what's avaliable...where as the "clone guy" builds what he wants, how he wants, when he wants,...often enjoying it years before the guy holding out for an "original" to surface,...in the end the "clone guy" is "having his cake, and eating it too"...kinda like when I do this :nana:

as limited production vehicles, it stands to reason they would rarely be seen over forty years later. heck, they were rarely seen, even when new. you don't often see any forty year old car, even models produced in the thousands, on the street anymore.

it is still amazing the backlash resulting from one simple question. in the time since then, two of those in disagreement with my view have called me negative and narrow minded. character assessments? seriously? although i find it interesting one of them is a moderator on this forum, i assume his comment was made solely from an opposing viewpoint, rather than as an official stance. if it was a warning, i missed it. either way, i stand by my opinion.

i do not expect anyone who supports the opposing point of view to see mine as having any merit. however, i did expect the debate to focus on the topic at hand, and not turn into a pissing match. clone supporters have been quite vocal, and even i do not summarily dismiss their opinions. i also appreciate the fine craftsmanship that several of them have demonstrated in creating a vehicle that must measure up to no one's standard but their own.

while i expected dissent from the clone supporters, the general silence from the other side speaks just as loudly to me. i am less diplomatic than most, and do not apologize for that. even so, had i not asked the question to begin with, this thread would not have over 1300 views. now i share responsibilty for promoting the very thing i am so against. that bothers me far more than anything else, since this thread would be well on its way to obscurity.

Quoteeven so, had i not asked the question to begin with, this thread would not have over 1300 views.

I think  Bigblocksam's orginal post about a "superbird clone" is the reason there is 1300 hundred views. Alot of people are interested in these aero cars...even the clones  :o  Heck, the post about superbird interior colors has almost as many views too.

I've met a few aerocar owners over the years, and most have been great guys, but a few have been arrogant, and a few have even been arrogant to another aerocar owner...until the found out he had a real Daytona...then he was "accepted".... ::)

Personally, I like clones, and I am currently building a 500 clone...the way I want it. I can also appreciate the prestige that goes along with owning a "real" one too. I think anyone into these cars WANTS a "real" one. But I'll never forget a few years back at a major mopar show I was taking some reference picts of a newly restored 500. I was talking to the owner (dont remember his name anymore) about his car and mentioned I was building a 500 clone. He looked at me like I was an idiot and said "A clone?!?!? Why don't you just buy a real one?!?!" That really left a sour taste in my mouth.

Not everyone has a gazzilion dollars, or has a family member that was into these cars back when they were new, or may have been around back then to buy one new and still own it. Some of us are "regular guys" with wives, and kids, and mortgages, and clones are the only way into "aero car" ownership...

...and even though I was fortunate enough to buy a "real" 500 project a couple years ago, I'm still gonna build my clone and have fun with it, as I am more "emotionally attached" to that Charger since I've owned it close to 20 yrs...and if time and money permit it, I'll restore the real one later...

Shut up and go away.  I don't care about the bubble you live in but I'm tired of it bouncing here.

"These cars never get driven," but when you are shown PROOF otherwise, you choose to mock?  Are you that stuck on your stupid idea?  Yeah, we all sat around thinking, "hey, some moron who wants to turn a Dart into a Daytona might join some message board someday and question whether wing cars are driven in the rain.  Better take some pics to prove him wrong!"  Trust me, you're not that relevant.

Do I go LOOKING for an opportunity to drive the 'birds in the rain?  Obviously not, genius.  Then again, I don't want to drive ANY 40 year old car in the rain!  I prefer decent wipers, decent lights, stopping distances not measured in astronomical units, etc.

Do I drive it to work every day?  No, for much of the same reasons I just listed.  Keep in mind, I HAVE A CLONE, and I don't drive that one to work every day, either!  Name someone you know that drives a muscle car, real or not, every damn day.  I don't.  12MPG, lousy handling, bad radios, windows that don't seal, vinyl seats...I'll have my 944, thanks.  I did that when I was 18 and don't want to do it again.  Do you drive a Dart every day?  i did, for three years, rain, sun or snow.

In 2009, I drove to Talladega for the third time.  It rained both ways.  I took it home and sent it to a body shop.  I got it back this summer the day of the Indy meet, and drove it home at 5:30AM in a DOWNPOUR.  Shit happens.  It rained every day we were at the meet, too.  We had 25 wings at the meet out at various times, and Indy had close to 100 cars.  No one escaped the rain.

This year's meet in Cleveland was soaked, and I'm pretty sure WE had the only clone, and we left it at home one day in favor of a real, numbers matching Petty Blue 'bird!

I can't speak for people who don't drive their wing cars.  I don't understand why they don't take them out more, but more often than not they have more than just a wing and don't drive those, either.

funny...I enjoy the real Superbirds here much more than I enjoy the fake Daytona here.  I doubt you'll find many original wing car owners suffering through their ownership.

yes you can get caught in the rain with a real superbird and daytona . you don't drive a real one as much as you drive  a replica . there just worth to much . what if a  stupid person runs a stop sign and destroys your real 440 6pack superbird . that's destroying history.

my truck was in the body shop for a month . i used my daytona replica every day . went to  shoprite , gym , everywhere . left it in the parking lot for hours  (it has an alarm)

i would never do that with a real one . you can't there just worth to much .

you show a picture or two in the rain,  that's cool  ,you where on a club run or going to a show and it rained.  with my replica  i've looked out the window and it was raining and took the daytona out . wouldn't do that with a real one. show me that you put 5 or 6 thousand miles on it a year and not just going to far away shows . driving it like  a  car. i got 6k miles on my daytona this year . no shows no cruise with the club . just driving her like a car .

doing donuts, burnouts , drag raced . high speed runs. there fun cars replicas . cause you don't have to worry . if it gets f-ed up . i'll savage what i can and build another . no history or pedigree lost .  :Twocents:

you've now gone from making mostly no sense to making no sense at all.  I don't see any ships from the Chinese Navy cruising around, so they must not have one.  I don't see fighter planes except at air shows, so the Air Force must only use them for exhibitions.  i don't see Giraffes except at the zoo, so they must not otherwise exist.

if you've NEVER seen a wing car out, you really don't go to many Mopar shows.  With a 200 car turnout at least one USUALLY shows...

I have to admit that I like to see all Mopars, real, clone, or otherwise.
I am however, fortunate enough to own a factory built Superbird and do drive it to long distance meets, to local shows, even to Lowes if I need a gallon of paint sometimes! Is it a daily driver no, But I'm not afraid to drive the car....IT's just a car. If it's wrecked or damaged I'll fix it.
In the rainy picture from Milwaukee that may be my B5 car in the line. It seemed like it rained that whole meet. And here is another pic most of you have seen before, Yes My "Real" superbird has even been caught in the SNOW! I just get tired of being cast as an "Aero Snob" because I have a Superbird. I'm pretty proud of my slant six Demon too. I just don't see the where the sniping is coming from, my "real" car will probably never be as "nice" of a car as some of the clones discussed on this Forum (look at 1Hotdaytonas car - mine will Never be that nice)! Some of these clones are beautiful cars and very well put together, as long as they are not sold as "original" cars when it comes time to sell, Who cares?

telling grown men that the cars belong to my mother?  it's priceless.  you can't even imagine.  my friends like telling people they're my mom's cars just to see the reaction!  If I don't feel like making conversation I tell people it's mine.  it's no secret who holds the titles, and I don't have a problem with it.

the only one who sees 'better than thou' attitudes are the ones with clones.  sorry you don't see it that way.

Not everyone should be lumped into that. The ones who are acting like they are better for having an authentic aero car know who they are.

Truth be know , Id love to have a real Daytona, But until I can afford the price that goes with a HEMI 4 speed xx car I will be tickled with what I have.

Some are allured or trapped by the so-called "historical value" of a vehicle, and feel it should be left "untouched",...in my practice, I've "destroyed" countless vehicles by parting them out (hundreds over the decades) or cloning them into other marques,.... base models, V codes, U codes meant/mean nothing...again my opinion they're just machines to modify to suite ones taste/desire

mike

even though i have an original.... i would consider one of your creations because they are artwork unto themselves.

"My car has minus 2,700 original miles, because I drove it backwards from the day I got it"

"I've got a correctly date coded traffic ticket for parking too close to a fire hydrant because the nose overhung the parking space line."

"I have a photo of Richard Petty looking at a magazine which references a Burger Hut in Flatrock, Michigan where the lead designer for the Superbird once stopped to use the men's room AND I have a receipt for a hamburger from that same restaurant dated November 1969."

"The actual build date for my car was in reality 10,000 B.C. because the Star Trek Episode about Time Travel was broadcast on the day my car was supposed to be built, but because of the time travel effect it caused by car to be built about 10,000 years earlier.   And you can see I have a TV guide from 1969 to prove it."

"My build sheet was actually rolled up and used to roll joints with in 1970, but I managed to rescue the ashes and I've spent 40 years piecing it back together one ash piece at a time."

PS I didn't make those up.... they are all things that are true about my car.

i never thought i would have to bump my own post to shed light on this entire thread!  Sheesh, get over it already.  The only person that anyone should be pissed off at is a person who represents a clone as an original (because their is a dollar difference in the value) but there is no difference in enjoyment.  (Maybe that's what ticks off some of tehe original owners - a guy with a replica is having more fun than they are.)  Fun is a state of mind!  I don't drive my car, because I can't afford to wreck it.  But I still have a ton of fun!

yes you can get caught in the rain with a real superbird and daytona . you don't drive a real one as much as you drive  a replica .

we have a:

real superbird
real superbird
fake daytona

I'll drive the real birds over the fake daytona any day.  after a while, "is that real?" gets annoying

But, How often do they ask if there your moms?

Man,I just cant stand the better than everyone else additude that this thread has brought out. .....................

telling grown men that the cars belong to my mother?  it's priceless.  you can't even imagine.  my friends like telling people they're my mom's cars just to see the reaction!  If I don't feel like making conversation I tell people it's mine.  it's no secret who holds the titles, and I don't have a problem with it.

the only one who sees 'better than thou' attitudes are the ones with clones.  sorry you don't see it that way.

--real wing cars don't get driven
--real wing car owners are jerks
--real wing car owners this and that

we drive our cars, I'm not THAT big of a jerk, etc.

I have something to say. I owned a genuine factory built Superbird at one point in my life (drove it daily for 2 years in the mid 90s). I now own a "clone" or "replica" if you will. EVERY wingcar owner I have ever had the pleasure of discussing my favorite car with has been a pure pleasure with no attitude what-so-ever. The rough generalizations are inaccurate.

Now let me get this straight. The guys who are throwing the biggest stones here dont actually own a wing car???!!!   :smilielol:

I agree with rainbow4jd, real? clone? who cares, it all depends on what you want and are happy with, the problem I have is the people, like others have said, that make their car out to be something it's not. "this is one of one becasue a guy named larry installed the muffler clamps on a tuesday" -- thats a bunch of crap. There's a guy around me that has a orange clone bird. Ok, it's a decent car and I'm sure it's fun, but it doesn't have the correct rear window, it's a post car, but at least they are painted orange, and he's used blocks of wood to prop up the headlight doors. But unless you're knowledgeable, he'll pass it off as real. When he's at shows, I don't knock the car or "challenge" him about it's originiality, I would just walk by and say " nice car".  I've only talked to the guy twice and won't any more because he wanted to be a big shot in front of his friends and tried to make it out like I wanted to buy his car! Perhaps he was jealous because I had an AAR? I don't know, but I don't think anybody should knock anybodys car. Now if someone is being a stuck up douche bag, then put them in their place. I saw Danes car when I was in oregon at the shop thats doing mine, and Danes was awesome. When mines done, i wish i could afford to have Dane do one of his seamless nose cars for me. Hummm... candy plum crazy with white pearl stripes coming from the door indents blending to a white wing, 440 with a tunnel ram and 2 4's (can't afford a blower) lol   It's all about what you want.  I'm sure when my car is done, there will be some that will knock this or knock that, say that the Graveyard Carz shop should have done it this way or that.  I'm simply viewing it this way. My car isn't the best to start with, to some it's just another r4 440 automatic, the original front was missing as is the motor and tranny, the floors are getting replaced as is the trunk, etc, etc,  but as a single divorced guy raisng two kids, it's all I could afford and was lucky enough to get it.  At least I'm saving a real one and who can knock that?

i mention locking the thread,  since it is obviously no longer getting anywhere. it certainly shows no sign of getting back on topic. i personally don't care whether it's locked or not, or if it goes away. i can play along, as well as anyone.

SURE LIKE  that daytona and color combo. think wires got crossed? i never said ''never driven'' and said nothing bout afraid of rain or weather.i did say rarely driven or seen out , and that is from my oregon west coast area view. some guys live in areas where more wing cars are and get to see them more. r4daytona's car is only real 1 i've seen in many years, and it is from some other state?  i roam all over oregon and washington to car shows and have only seen 2 daytona clones out and about. would love to see more wing cars around. i enjoyed seeing 383wing and daytona guys cars very much and never looked at vin tags. cause i look at and enjoy the cars and the way there are built. sorry no offence meant to any wing owners, ride on...dj

Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks.
'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?'
'Sure..'
'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks.
'No, I can remember it..'
'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so
As not to forget it?'
He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.'
'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?' she asks.
Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!'
Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, The old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs.. She stares at the plate for a moment.
'Where's my toast ?'  :smilielol:

............ disdain for clones of any make or model ...............

2 a: a person who is not what he or she pretends to be : impostor; also: one who defrauds : cheat
b: one that is not what it seems or is represented to be

clones are like a girl wearing a strap-on. both may look the part, but neither is what it so badly wants to be. there was once a time when people did without the things they could not afford, or settled for what they could. not anymore. today it's "i can't afford what i want, so i will just pretend i have it, and expect everyone else to agree that it's ok". well, not everyone does.

your damn right i pretend i can afford something that i can't afford, and if the wife doesn't like that i call out Jessica (Beal-sp) when having sex then she better stop calling out Brad (pitt)

The real ones would have more value and come with more prestige and bragging rights but, you could have more fun taking the implanted clones away from home on a daily basis knowing they are easily replaced should something bad happen.

That was kinda my point Doug...a well done clone can be just as much fun and enjoyment as the real deal. The amount of fun you have really comes down to the owner, not so much the car...

And I agree with Earnie's quote above as well. There is definately a big difference between a real car and a clone, hence the big $$$ real cars command. But with only a few hundred of these cars made, and not all of those surviving 40+yrs, not alot of us can afford the real ones. Clones are as close as we'll get. And with so few real ones around, clones are also as close as many people will get to seeing one cruising around. I think they definately have a place in our hobby, as do the real ones. And as long as the distinction between the two can be maintained, everyone should be able to get along.

I can appreciate the work that went into the white car above.  That said, what the hell was the total bill on that thing???  It's gorgeous, and that doesn't come cheap.  If it was someone with the time and talent to do it themselves, more power to them, but if you have to pay for something like that you're in for tens of thousands of dollars, and you still have a fake car.  There are enough driver Superbirds lying around that you could have (and there are sales in the past 2-3 years to prove it) that you could have had a real live car for about the same money.  Driver clones are one thing--you really DO have less money in them--but the flawless recreations leave me scratching my head.  If I couldn't have what I wanted, and I had the skills to create something so beautiful, I'd pull off the bodywork equivalent of Troy trades until I did.  I know a lot of people who did just that to get what they wanted, wing car, Chevy or whatever.  One of my good friends here flipped in and out of six cars to get his 'bird, and my best friend had to flip four.

I don't get the 'clones are as close as people get to seeing one' thing, either.  Honestly--there are over 1,200 surviving wing cars vs how many clones?  In northeast Ohio there are more than 15 real cars to two clones, and one of those is ours.  Obviously we're not a normal area, but again clones aren't clogging the streets.

when i do see one at a show i don't bother looking at the VIN, i could care less whether it is real or not, usually there is a sign or something to tell u anyway, i just like looking at cool cars and they don't have to be 100% bone stock to be cool either

I immediately look at every VIN of every car I like at a show.  Then I read the fender tag.  No joke.

funny on that moparts thread.  more fake car owners assuming that people with real cars can't have any fun, or do burnouts, or whatever...

hot rod=personalize to your liking

clone/tribute/fake/replica=building the car to look like a different factory car of similar specification

I also check the VINs at shows. I like to know which plant built the car and how far along in the model year it was built. Sure would be cool to find the car that is consecutive to mine. Fat chance of that though. I like clones if they are relatively correct looking and cars with period correct modifications but I admire the originals more. As for Charger and Charger Daytona/Superbird convertibles, cars with triple wings and so on, sorry, don't want to offend but, I don't like em. I think cars like that just confuse the public to the point that nobody outside our group knows what a Charger is anymore.

the car looks funny. but cool hot rod.  and most wing people i've met  were really cool guys. they love talking about the car. gotta say never met a winged asshole. never.  most mopar people seem real cool. we all seem to bunch together at car shows. and the wing guys do the same. dont know where you all live. but in colorado mopar is mopar and were all equal. wing or no wing. but got to say this you tag readers need to get a life. it's a car. nothing more. i get tag readers all the time and just tell them to move on. and then i tell them YES IT WAS A 318 CAR.  it's not wing car people who are jerks. it's the tag readers.  who cares what it was. its a beautiful 440 car now.  it's not factory and i dont care. clone or real there just the coolest car ever. it's your car do with it what you will. if someone dont like it.....fuck them. :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

I don't get the 'clones are as close as people get to seeing one' thing, either.  Honestly--there are over 1,200 surviving wing cars vs how many clones?  In northeast Ohio there are more than 15 real cars to two clones, and one of those is ours.  Obviously we're not a normal area, but again clones aren't clogging the streets.

:yesnod: yes, you are right...clones aren't clogging the street either. Obviously my comment isn't true about most of the people in this forum, but was meant more so about the general public. Anyone really into mopars is gonna see one at most major shows...Carlisle, Mopar Nats, Chrysler Classics, etc...or if they live near someone like you who does take their real car out alot. But I think (and please don't take this the wrong way Doug) your perspective is a bit skewed because your family has always had wingcars, so for you that's the norm. I'm sure over the years people at shows have asked you "what is that?" about one of your wing cars. A few years ago I was parked at a "all makes" carshow next to Gary's B5 Daytona clone and heard several people ask the person they were with "what is that thing?" So for them, the only Daytona they've ever seen was a clone...not to mention all the A12 clones, Hemicuda clones, Shelby clones, LS6 clones, etc...some people have never seen a "real" car and don't even known it...

...and yes, you can spend alot of money building a clone. But often times the buy-in to get a real one is just too much. I'm betting you couldn't build a real hemi Daytona for double what Brian (1hotdaytona) has in his white clone. We've all seen the burned out, rotted out shells sell for $30-40k, essentially just to buy the VIN....these cars are rare, and desirable, and the demand far outweighs the supply...I guess it really comes down to how badly someone wants a real one...

edit: I meant to say the white Daytona clone is Brian's (1hotdaytona), not Larry's (although the black and red one he made is awesome too).

well, everyone finds their own way to enjoy the sport. or mabey car owning isnt a sport but a hobby. anyway, if a guy likes to read tags, thats what he does. thats the way he enjoys the hobby by finding the past. whats wrong with that? that doesnt mean he doesnt like your car, just likes to track history. those are usually the guys that could tell you statistic's of every plant etc..........they also see what # in the chain these cars were produced.in the collector car world, its all about those vin's and tags.im not a tag watcher, or statistic keeper, or option guy. but we all read the crap out of the knowledge that these guys retain. just enjoy the hobby how ever you choose.

I take great offense.  not only my perspective, but overall I'm highly skewed.  ask anyone who knows me

can you build a real hemi daytona for the cost of a clone?  of course not.  could he have had a driver Superbird for the cost of the build?  yes.  would I rather have a driver 'bird over a perfect hemi clone?  i think I've demonstrated that!

I also love tag reading.  I even like tag reading when a car isn't what it should be.  The coolest mopars (aside from aeros, of course) are the oddballs that were made.  We have a gorgeous purple '70 hemicuda clone here at work that just happened to be sand pebble beige with black body side moldings and an F8 bench interior.  How retched!  then again, who the hell would have ordered that?  it's fun to see the combinations.

I get positively giddy when I see cars close to ours, and I just about fall over when I see another Canadian Daytona (VIN starts with 414!)  There are TWO Canadian F8 Daytonas in NE Ohio...awesome!

Did I mention I'm skewed?

two things:

Labors of love have no price tag.   I knew a guy who spent nearly three years trying to build a ship in a bottle.  He was damn proud of it when he was done.  But for the life of me, I can't understand why anyone would put that much time into something NO ONE really cares about but him.   Until I realized, he didnt do it for anyone else  - he did it for himself.

I don't have a problem with anyone having fun and I don't think its any of my business to be a grump about it.  I have fun with mine, you have fun with yours.

sorry pettybird - didn't realize that it sounded like I was directing my reply AT you.

It was a rhetorical.

By the way, I think the real issue, which causes the animosity, is that there is a fear that if ENOUGH clones are out there, then someone with a REAL bird or tona may lose value.   i.e. Mr Moneybags comes along and says, "I don't care whether its original or clone, I just want one to have fun and I'll pay ONE MILLION DOLLARS because I think his clone looks better than your original"

It's all about fear in my mind.

WOW!  I don't know where to start.  I am lucky enough to have a real car.  And anyone who knows me knows that I drive the heck out of it.  From Seattle to the 1999 reunion.  7,500 miles in 2 weeks - IT WAS THE BEST 2 WEEKS OF MY LIFE IN THE CAR WORLD!!!!!!  But when I got there the grief I got was crazy.  Everyone told me I was nuts to drive it there, but I was the guy who had the most fun!  Weather real or a clone we are lucky enough to have one.  There is no reason to be an ass to anyone for any reason.  Before I got the wing I had a very nice 70 Charger R/T V code and was looked down upon by ever hemi owner I met.  Right then and there I told myself that I would never be an ass.  We are a family and let us enjoy our hobby to its up most.  I always tell everyone that the guys who made our cars WERE NOT making something special, it was just a job and we have taken and made them more than they were ever intended to be.   :2thumbs:

....And Im fine with that. We are all allowed to have our opimions. Its the fact that some people want to cram thiers down others throats thats a problem...

you don't see the contradiction, let alone the irony, in your own words, do you? you were one of the two people on here to take someone else's differing opinion about the subject, and use it to make character judgements about them. if that isn't trying to cram your opinion down someone else's throat, what is?

in your defense, i also might it find it hard to think positive of those who dislike what i have built with my own hands.

sure, i get it.  i'm even capable of stating my opinion without getting personal about it, nor having negativity beyond the topic at hand.

excuse me? show me where i've gotten personal anywhere in this thread, or where my "negative" and "narrow minded" opinion has gone beyond clones, which ARE the topic at hand. i will gladly eat those words, and apologize to whomever i should.

The topic started out about ONE particular Clone. You turned it into your own debacle about how much you despise clones. Thats the part where I suggest you keep it to yourself. It just plain wasn't need, wanted, or asked for.

Point is: If you dont like clones ,fine. Just stay out of clone threads. Its simple. All you do is creat trouble when you enter those particular threads.

i asked one question, with no intention of causing anything. my opinion of clones did not weigh in to that question, and did not cause trouble within this thread until after clone supporters took offense to a perceived slight. you state this...

... then you suggest i should not have expressed mine. was it needed, wanted, or asked for? no. neither were twenty other opinions, none of which were needed, wanted, or asked for. you are right, this thread started out in regards to a single clone. why not take exception to the negative opinions expressed about the car itself? i'm sure whoever built it would find none of those opinions needed, wanted, or asked for.

the only reason you have an issue with my opinion, is because it is different than your own. am i sorry i shared it? no. would i do it again? probably not, if only to keep a clone thread from gaining continuing exposure. as far as expressing regret for the continuing nonsense, i did so six pages ago.
