here is a little project im doing for lennard, he gave permission to post this. im going to be building a little ratmuscle driver out of his base model 68. in light of my rat muscle project it sparked lennard to use this base model car he had just sitting, to make a fun driver out of it as he knows his 69 r/t is going to take much more time and money to finish. this car is not going to be a full restoration but rust will be fixed and all aspects of a reliable driver will be done plus a few performance mods. he has a 440 lying around from his 69 r/t that i will be building for it aswell and i think i have him talked into a 6 spd swap aswell behind the 440 as im going the same route on my rat muscle project "daisy". ive done them before in mopars using a t56 and a tr6060 (tr6060 was a lot more involved) thats just a quick run down of whats going on, ill get more in detail as it goes on.

got the car stripped of all chrome, glass, bezels, wiring, bumper and front body. then drilled the spot welds for the driver quarter and removed it.
the car needed both quarter skins, rear window patches, trunk pan, right hand corner and a passenger outer wheel house at first glance but after cutting into it i found it also needs a package tray, rear window filler, valance, driver outer wheel house and driver corner. a little more than expected but he agreed it needs to be fixed right. im going to cut all the metal away and get it blasted in all the rust areas. my "daisy" project is also going to need all the same metal so both will have panels removed and blasted at the same time.

I hope you are saving those rear wheels. They are unobtanium!
The fronts are nothing to throw away either. Plenty of General Lee guys want 'em. The new repro Vectors are okay but they don't look quite the same.
I'm trying to talk out of a pair of those 15x10's....hint hint lennard lol
wow how long was that car sitting in the weeds?
Very cool that a car that not long ago would be considered a total loss will be on the road turning heads again!
@ RalleyMike: The rear wheels stay. The fronts will be swapped with 15x8,5s when the project is finished and then the 15x7s will be for sale.
@Chris: I'll trade them for labor. ;)
@crj1968: I bought the car in 2005, so it's been sitting at least ten years. It was already turning heads "as is" when I trailered it to Chris.
Soon to be another Charger on the road. Cool project :icon_smile_cool:
:coolgleamA: :2thumbs: looks a mean mutha already with the rear wheel & tire combo :yesnod: :popcrn:
I already knew...but I'm finding out again that there is no cheap way to put a second generation charger together.
I need almost everything new sheet metal wise for the rear.
Example:
Deck filler panel for a '68 Charger: $250
Deck filler panel for a '68 Camaro: $45
:pity:
are you doing 1/4 skins, or complete 1/4 ?
Skins on both sides. It doesn't need full quarters.

I don't know if I have seen Vectors that wide before, those are cool! :2thumbs:
Nice looking project, it's nice to see another one coming back to terrorize the streets.
lets go 6 speed...heres the last one i did, had to make the factory console work with the six speed and shape tunnel to contour the console with mounting brackets. then modify the shifter to come out the 4 speed shifter boot.

lol ok, are we going to use the 4 speed you have out back or auto?
6 speed! I just upped the budget. ;D
There goes my plan for a low budget rat muscle build. :slap:
Cool project :2thumbs: ,wish i could have a rat charger!
Tell me about mopar prices :flame: i even needed full rear frames, basically everything from the back seat to the rear valance!
Nice work going there cbr! :popcrn:
didnt tinker much on it today, but did get the other side ready for blasting

Those rear wheels look great!
I had some 8.5s on my old charger.
I have the new versions now. They're nice but I prefer the old ones.
Looking forward to seeing this one evolve.
I just sold a pair of the same 15x10 original vectors on ebay for $500, but they were chevy lug pattern.
I'd love to find a mopar pair. Just wondering, are yours legit 4.5 mopar or unilug?
They are unilug. I've never seen a 15x10 vector with just mopar bolt pattern. Only Chevy and unilug.
there needs to be a vector wheels love thread now lol
I'm their biggest fan. I have 3 classic cars and all 3 roll on Vectors. :2thumbs:

I'd consider it, for the right price and since they're worth their weight in gold......
It already looks like its going to be too nice to be a "Rat" build. I love the used hot rod look. Here is one of my favorites. Color is close to yours.

the passenger rocker was beat up pretty bad and had previous repairs, all hid with bondo. i had a rocker patch panel for my new 70 charger and so i used it on lennards, never again will i buy that piece of junk rocker patch panel, had to cut the damn thing up to fit correctly. all the bends were in the wrong spot, but i had it and wanted to get it ready for epoxy coat soon.

Same reason as why all Charger specific parts cost at least 3x more than what Mustang or Camaro parts cost.
They made way less Chargers back in the days so they will sell way less reproduction parts so to get their development and production costs back they need to charge more $$ for the parts.

I new we paid a bit of a premium but I did not realised it was so pronounced. The cost of cool I guess!
Good mark valance and corners do not agree with Amd quarter panel, even though Amd corners have issues too. I'll get it all flush and clean gap in the end. charger 2 gen bendix brake caliper kit $49 per side :rotz: dodge dart 1972 $17 per side, mustang 1970 $8.75 per side :nana: really development look at the dart price and the second gen charger price. similar kit and same amount of parts. how much demand is there for 1972 dodge dart to 2 gen chargers

I'm about 1/3 the cost of a body shop, or free if you have charger parts I want lol. Lennard has paid for probably half the work in swapping parts I need lol. Wheel houses and trunk extentions welded, wheel houses didn't take too much modifying to fit but the trunk extentions took a little work.

If you don't mind me asking, how much do you charge to put on quarters, valance, and a trunk pan? I need to replace this metal on my 70 and I'm trying to figure out what a realistic body shop price would be.
Very good work by the way! :2thumbs:
Oh and if you don't want to advertise the price then send me a PM.
I just do it by the hr as I suck at estimating lol, with rust and damage that can be hidden under old bondo and paint. I'd rather just charge what it actually took me to do it vs. Overcharging to cover what might be there. I'm $35hr...For both quarters, trunk and valance I would say it's gonna be around 2k. The cutting off is the easy dirty part, making everything fit right is the pain lol.

So while mocking up the drivers side it had its own issues, the bumper recess didn't have the same angle of recess causing the flange that attaches to the tail panel to stick out farther than its supposed to, so cut out the area and reshaped it to bring back the flange. Also had to reshape the quarter to fit the valance corner. I also had to pie cut the valance corner to keep the top of it at the same plane as the valance. I post a pic of the cut out piece next to the passenger side so you can see the difference in angle. Passenger side is almost 90 while driver was about 45

When you weld all along the side of the car like that do you do anything to the back side of the weld after you are done ?
Would the weld just burn off any paint or sealer that might be there and be a place for rust to start ?
Second last picture what is the wing thing in back ground ?
Just grind it smooth and spray some epoxy on the back side. It's a Daytona clone

been doing alot of trimming and modifying on the fiberglass fenders and since he did go with fiberglass i suggested the the front clip be braced so i made soome braces off the firewall. the fenders had some huge pad that was supposed to fixed to the radiator support but there was no way it was going to work so just cut it off and bolted a simple piece of aluminum in its place

Pretty convenient.
I had an 84 Chevy truck for 9 years. The 73-87 Chevy trucks had a gas tank on each side. You could pull into a station and get gas anywhere.
You can do that with just one filler over here.. The fuel hoses have to be long enough to reach both sides of the car...just as well as I drive so many different cars I can never remember which side the cap is!

havent post anything on lennards car in awhile, i think its safe to say the rat muscle theme went out the window long ago. its just been body work and custom stuff here and there. for example the fiberglass fenders didnt fit the grill for shit and had to add more taper in like the originals to contour the grill. that was just one of the many fiberglass body panel issues of many. i also rolled and pushed out the quarter a little for the larger wheels. anywho...she be tight now, just a final primer coat to wet sand out sanding marks and she be ready for satin black. now lennard has a twin turbo'd 440 on the mind and wants that. so that will be fun to build headers and piping for.

Did you get new carpeting yet? If not I might have a deal on some 68-70 B Body carpet (black).
Cool deal on the modern transmission upgrade. :2thumbs:
I have new carpet for my '68 but if it's a good deal I'll buy it for my '69.

Probably going twin turbo making between 800 and 1000hp. Going to be a dependable/streetable power cruiser, not a race car.
Keep it under 800

Only in America can a guy claim 800 HP and call it a street cruiser!

How is the engine/car coming along Leonard?

The front suspension is done.
The 4 link has been welded onto the car.
The rear axle has been narrowed 2 inches on each side to make the wheels fit perfectly inside the wheel wells.
I bought a 6 speed manual out of a 2013 Challenger and bought the engine conversion mounts to put in the 3rd generation Hemi that Chris gave me.
The windshield wiper motor is restored and i just took the vent window frames apart to take them to the chrome shop.
This project certainly snowballed! ;-)
Very cool!
Pat
Thanks Pat, it sure did. Chris is full of great ideas.
When it is done, you will probably forget about the money you spent and just enjoy what you did. Often times when an original plan is changed , the new plan is a better one. :2thumbs:

I'll cut labor to $10 if I get the car in ur will 😂
I don't think that's a great idea.
Ridetechs bolt in 4 link setup is ok, but overpriced for what it takes to make it fit nice. Should of just built one from scratch. they want you to Swiss cheese ur frame rails which are only a thicker sheet metal already. Plus it was too narrow to fit in between the rails. I lengthen'd both cross bars 1/4" and used the supplied Swiss cheese holes to plug weld and stitch around edges. Then for Lennard's 10" vectors to fit up in the wheel houses I narrowed the rear end 4".

I appreciate the offer but the wheels didn't come with the original center caps, so I bought a set of "special edition" caps on ebay.
No problems. They fit the special edition caps if you want the old school look, just gotta grind down a small molded bump in the center of the cap.
Looking forward to seeing more updates :yesnod:

I'm surprised that you could still find this topic... it must have been on page 50 or so. :icon_smile_big:
Rear transmission mount is done and trans tunnel is finished, short shifter mounted, the bottom of the car is "lizard skinned" and Chris is now working on the roll bar.
Oh... and I also bought a 2.8L Kenne Bell mammoth blower. :drive:

His house is at the end of the street. There is a road next to where he's working so nobody can cry about what he's doing.
Just thinking the noise of drilling and grinding. I know I drove my neighbours nuts building my first airplane in our garage.. and we were all 150 feet apart.
He's been living and working on cars there for years, so apparently it doesn't bother the neighbors too much. ;)

It's going slow, been waiting for 2 months now on Milodon parts to convert the Hellcat Hemi to a mid sump oil pan.
It's been almost 4 years ? :scratchchin:
I just seen Lennard's car a few weeks ago in person while visiting Las Vegas at CBR's. Although moving a bit slowly his '68 is going to be BAD A$$!!!!
Great sheet metal work done by Chris. Lennard's Charger is going to be unique.
Give it time, it will eventually be hitting the streets. :vert:
