Hi KP,

Daily driver 69 Chargers are $50,000 not $5,000 methinks?

An assumption I'm making here is that the car you are looking for will not be your daily transport. If that's true you than your optimism is realistic.


I have to agree. Let's say you spend 7k now on a Mopar, you will very likely not get 7k back when you sell it because you'll be using it as a daily and the car is not the most desireable mopar to begin with. So, let's say in two years you get 5k for it. You're now down 2K towards the Charger. Plus, the cost of the Charger has gone up (likely) in the last two years. Don't forget too, a 30+ year old Mopar for 7K will likely chew up some of that hard earned money in maintenance and fuel if you plan on driving it daily most of the year. It may work well when you buy it, but it can start costing money very quickly. Again, that's more Charger money burned.

We all know you want to build a LEE1 replica, which is cool. However, as I said in another post in another section of the forum, do what you can to get the Charger asap because it its the car you ultimately want, even if it takes a few years to build up to being drivable,  let alone a LEE1 replica. Chargers are not getting less rare or cheaper. Using a less desireable, less expensive car as a stepping stone will very likely increase the time it takes to get a Charger.

He has to drive something... Lets say he purchased an '05 magnum for 7k. Owns it for 2 years and now can only get 5K for it.  I don't see a difference.  So, any commuter will eventually cost him.  So, if it is going to cost him a little bit after a few years, regardless, why not drive something that is less common on the highways? 

As for finding a 1st gen or 3rd gen between 5k and 7.5k, they are all over.

But why spend the 7k to begin with? From what I understand, he doesn't really NEED to do so, but he wants to do just to have an old Mopar. If his current ride is ready to be retired, then yes I agree he needs a commuter car so an old mopar (what he wants) would be cool to have. However, if his current ride still runs and drives (and maybe paid for), and he really wants a Charger, why spend the 7K that could go towards a Charger on something he doesn't really need.

I agree...

I'd spend ~3K and keep your current driver.  This will satisfy driving an old mopar and saving for your '69 as Dreamcar points out.

In my expert <cough> opinion, if your primary goal is a 69 Charger then don't spend a dime on anything. Old cars eat up cash whether you're in the middle of a restoration OR driving them. It's highly likely that you'll spend more on keeping a not-so-rare/pricy old car on the road then it is worth. If you have a limited budget you can't blow it all then magically have anything left over when a Charger comes your way. Unfortunately, I do this fairly often so do as I say and not as I do! I have four projects that would be super cool when finished but I often buy drivable heaps just because I enjoy driving more than working in the garage. For example, the $7,000 that I spent on a toy truck means I don't have enough in the "old car fund" to paint one of my Chargers. On top of that, I spent $190 on gas, $30 on gaskets, and $400 on tires over the weekend. That's about what I need for machine work for the Chargers. More cars means it's easier to justify more tools, more space, and buying in bulk - all budget killers. Unless you're made of money (and sometimes even then) every little thing becomes a compromise. Learn to save and focus on what would really make you happy. If you dream of a GL1 replica and nothing else will satisfy you then accomplish that goal without getting sidetracked! Take on a part time job, sell off collectibles, stop eating out, drink water instead of soda, don't smoke/chew, avoid strip clubs and sports events, etc.

On the other hand, sometimes our dreams are more about what would improve our standing amongst others and not truly what would make *us* happy. It's very possible that another car would provide as much (or more) enjoyment than you think. I used to dream of 1 of 1 Hemi cars and factory 427 Cobras and GT40s until I realized that I driving one of them as much as I drive my current cars would not be practical - and likely very nerve wracking! Having a cool car that's only good for sitting in my garage would be depressing to say the least. One of my biggest regrets is selling my 73 Barracuda 318 auto. It wasn't rare or beautiful buuuut it was cheap, comfortable, ultra dependable, and nice enough to generate a lot of attention. I piled on the miles in that car. Sold it for something that's still in pieces in my garage eating money/time at a high rate (actually, two somethings which is even worse). While I "traded up" in the car world I certainly lost in the quality of life department.

And some of you guys need to learn to "let go". Makes life a little less miserable.

He'd probably take $5,000 at the least. I thinks it's mostly original paint & interior & low mileage, Some old grandpa owned car. I'd drive it myself for daily driver if I had the funds. LEON.

This is the point I'm trying to make. If the OP wants a 69 Charger (based on the multiple threads he's created), this is an example of what can come up for sale and he wouldn't necessarily have to go through buying and selling (and maybe losing money) on a third gen.

I still say it's easier to cut expenses as far as possible and get a 2nd job. Flipping cars to fund a hobby is a TON of work for (usually) little gain. If you're serious you need to think about flipping multiple cars per week. Not just one ever.

So, I suppose I have been lucky - but I've never had a car fall in my lap for free. I was mainly lucky in the fact that I had cash when a car became available and I got it before anyone else did. Make your own luck. Get cash and start hunting for cars where no one else is and you'll have one way before your luck and hunches pay off. Unless your luck comes from benevolent parents/relatives.

Knightprowl: In the General Q&A section of the forum, you started a thread where you claim to have a 30k budget, and you kept us going about a LEE1 replica, and now it appears that you have no intention (or money or job) to get a Charger in the first place for at least a few years. What gives????  And if there's a way of enjoying my Charger and rebuilding it without a job, can someone please tell me how?
