- mild port edelbrock heads
-Street dominator intake manifold & 850dp carb
-MP distributor/MSD 6al box/Firecore 50 ignition wires/NGK plugs
-TTI 2in headers (1 7/8 would be better)
-X pipe exhaust system with Ultraflow mufflers & tailpipes

-727 trans with good internals & TA manual valvebody
-9.5in Dynamic street/strip converter
-Dana 60/ 4.10 gears

That sounds like a alot of convertor. Your right it sounds like alot of the members builds or even tamer. So it seems the difference is the details, duh. Sorta like how 318 2 barrel NHRA 'stock' drag cars can run 13's.

Here's some follow up data on this build.

(1) The heads were Stage 1 ported by Dwayne @ PRH with a competition valve job. Overall improvement was approx 15cfm across the board which is a nice gain.  :2thumbs:

* peak flow ; 301cfm intake/222cfm exhaust with some fat mid-lift numbers !  :icon_smile_big:

(2) Dyno results with a 17/8 in primary tube header which was a good choice with 446 cubes. The 2in headers lost 20ftlbs of torque across the board with NO gain in HP. Even on a 500in street/strip stroker the 17/8 primary would be a good choice, inmo.  :yesnod:

* peak power #'s ; 535hp/540tq in this configuration with 17/8 header

(3) Dyno results with a 2in primary tube header. This is a good illustration of what happens when you go too big...it hurts power output. This is the configuration that was run in the car ; 2in TTI's with an x-pipe system. It ran a best of 11.68@116 .... i'm sure it would have been faster with the 17/8 tubes....maybe a tenth or two  :scratchchin:

* peak power #'s ; 528hp/518tq with the 2in header

Interesting, and a little bit sobering to think about how much air needs to flow through a cylinder in order to merit the two inch header. :o

Yup, that's why I only used a 1-3/4" on my 505... my little itty-bitty cam & unported heads really didn't warrant the use of anything larger   ;D
The 1-3/4" gave me a nice flat torque curve from start to finish.

It is an eye opener for sure !  :o

Brian (OldSchool) recently dynoed his 850hp 572 build and it actually lost a small amount of power (5 ftlbs) going from the TTI step header (2 1/8-2in) to his custom 2 1/4 Headers that were fabbed up for the car. That was a suprise to me and Brian as well.  :yesnod:

My milder pump gas 572 will be using the 2in TTI's with the 3.5 x 3 Dr Gas X-pipe. I'm going to add a set of cutouts and do some back to back track testing to see if uncapping it is worth any ET.  :scope:

Agreed Mike....the 1.75 tubes are fine with your build given the cam & cylinder head package. In a heavy street car with mild gearing i'll take big torque over horsepower any day of the week. You did good brother !  :2thumbs:

ron, how do you think that motor would have run with the 1 3/4 headers like the doug thorleys?

BubBABFP

Those are some awesome numbers, Ron at what HP range would you recommend 1 7/8?

I'm sure it would've run just fine. There would be stronger bottom end power while giving up a little up top. In a heavy street car torque is more important than horsepower.  :Twocents:

I'd say the magic number for 17/8 tubes is 500-625hp give or take a few either way.

The calculator is showing 457 rear wheel horsepower to run 116mph @ 4100 raceweight. The 'ole 446 was doing it's job quite well.  :2thumbs:

So what happened to the 446? Did it get stored away or is it going to another home?
