Ok so I got pulled over the other night saying I had no tail lights but my brake lights and turn signal lights work. Any ideas? And if someone could take a picture of the light switch with the wires that would be awesome. And could someone take a picture of under the dash wire harness for a 1974 charge? Thanks.

Hi,

I would give this advice to anyone who owns or has just acquired a car from the 60's or 70's. If you have the car you really need a factory service manual. In this case you need the wiring diagrams to trace through the tail light circuits. your problem could be any number of things.

You can often find service manuals in both book and electronic form on EBay. Don't waste you time on generic manuals like Haynes, get the factory manual.  these cars are 40 years old, you're not going to find this information anywhere else.

Ok thanks. I did not think of getting the manual

Spot on Pete!  Unless you plan to pay someone else to do everything on the car for you (and if you do, you can bet they have a manual), then the fsm should be an almost mandatory purchase. :Twocents:

do you have cluster lights, front parking lights and sidemarkers ?

I have cluster lights front marker lights aren't hooked up need new ones. But my rear side marker lights aren't on. Ad when I turn te lights with on it blows the bottom left fuse

Nacho-RT74

ok. let's see... the power route for the parking lights and cluster light on 3rd gens comes in this way:

batt source---fuse---input to parking lights------output to parking lights ( front, rear and sidemarkers )
                                             !
                                             !
                                             !
!_____________ output from dimmer wheel-------fuse just for cluster lights------cluster lights

if the first fuse blown, you won't get parking NOR Cluster lights UNLESS the cluster light network is somehow bypassed.

the first fuse on the line I describe also feeds glovebox light and map light ( if equipped ).

Thank you for the info. I won't be able to work on it for couple of days because I have to work as school and football practice but hopefully Thursday i will be able to. I have anothe question. The repair manual. Where is a good place to get one and will it have the wiring under the dash?

Nacho-RT74

forgot to say, HEADLIGHT source comes from a diff input prong, straight from batt, no fuse. The fuse link would be the protection.

Yes, FSM got all the info. 74 FSM Originally consist in 2 books... Chassis and Body. They are being reproed now and pasted in one larger book or like originally was, two books. Also CD Roms available

Could someone post a pic of the right manual to get? That would help a lot.

Nacho-RT74

There is or was one single book reprint option, containing both, but can't find one at this moment.

CD ROM is nice, but nothing like get the paper in hands. SPECIALLY on electrical diagrams. 74 books are harder to read than earliers versions. They are 24 continuous pages and very technical. Earlier books got separated sections showing every area or function. Way easier to read and showing plugs on diagrams. 74 doesn't, just alphanumerical plugs codes
