I bought a steering column at the carlisle show for my 73 charger project. I am swapping column shift for floor shift.
Will there be any problems using this? The floor bracket has 4 holes as opposed to 3. That is the major difference I see.

I will post some pics if I can downsize them.

Yep, difference in length as 73 has a rag joint, 70 does not. You will have to modify.

AmadeusCharger500

I am not sure what a rag joint is. Any suggestions as to modifications?

Honestly i would get the right one

Since 73 the isolation system demanded extra isolation and ariculation on steering shaft using rubber couplers.

73 is one of a kind column, 74'is another one of a kind.

Can't talk about the 70 diff with 71/74 talking about lenght and brakets. Maybe if it was E Body could be easier due the firewall smilarity.

Aside that, 70 column parts are harder to find and expensive. Ign switch cilinder and turning switch are one year or one year and a half production. Ign switch cylinder gets a diff lock shaoe than laters, and ign switch hazzard knob is diff too.

Sell that one and get the right piece. Is not that hard

If you don't care to leave with the tranny linkage sleeve into the column being around, you could also simply use the 70 floor shifter collar parts and remove the shifter parts and collar  of your existant column.

I never have dealt with column shifters system to say if the shifter column sleeve can be removed without affect something else

Thanks for that info Nacho. I took the 73 column apart mostly, now at lock out tube. I am not sure if I want to go further. Floor shift columns seem rare. I found one from 74 Satellite, floor shift on craigslist a few states away from me. Thinking about calling.
You say 74 is a one off and so is 73.

Do you have any idea if they can interchange? Probable better choice then the 70 column I have. Plus I could sell the 70 like you said.

Nacho-RT74

With the 74 you'll get on a similar situation that you have at this moment with the 70. Firewall bracket is diff too, allong with the shaft composition. Maybe easier to build it mixing parts between those  than with the 70 ? Dunno.

Underdash bracket is diff to, but that's not a problem, you can keep the actual 73 on your column

As told, I'm not familiar with column shifter cars.

As stated you should be able to change the shfter collar taken of the 74, but I can't recall how would make with the shifter tube up to engine bay to the linkage, related bearings on firewall braket etc... more less same deal than with the 70 column.

Never have parted out a column shifter an loooong time ago since I dissasembled mi 74 floor shifter column to install a NOS shaft

Can the shifter tube be removed from the column assembly and still run the same bracket and lower bearing assembly? Thats my doubt.

After doing some reading I found this sight has "1971-79 Floor-Shift Steering Column Collars" for converting column shift to floor shift. http://www.tonysparts.com/newproductsB.htm

I called them and they said all the interior parts would simply transfer, minus the shifter.
I am thinking about trying this as I have the column completely apart now.
I am still having some trouble locating the correct seal on the lock out tube and the bearing inside the collar.

Being you are already in the boat with the 70 column, worths the try!

Pretty sure they make the diff betwen 70 and 71/79 just because the key cylinder lock and hazzard knob notch difference! I think both are "modifiable"

You'll see what I'm talking about when dissasembly the 70 column. As I tell, the turning switch and key cylinder are one year only ( although some earliers 71 could get them too ) on those items for 70 and not easy to come by!

The hazzard knob shape and column collar matched for it makes also the ign key courtesy light way different to ( if you want to add it ) and another one year only item.

Otherwise you still can sell the 70 colum and get any 71/74 without take care of the shaft or brackets difference, tu build your own one.

Can't recall which ones are those.
