I have been running this for about 3 years now and have only had 1 thing I had to mess with, reluctor needed to be moved closer and tightened down. However yesterday i got the car out for its second drive of the season and it started hesitating when i would take off, then it would not idle correctly, for example i would have my foot on gas trying to keep idle at 1000 rpm to warm it up and it would bounce all over 200-300 rpm's, step on the gas and it would almost want to stall out. I finally had it running ok, closed the hood and it shut off. I'm thinking there may be something off  with the distributor on the inside, any thought on where to look first?

Hey Comet,

What coil are you running ? What voltage regulator ?

The RTR requires a CD style coil. An OEM style voltage regulator (Points/Mechanical) does not play well with the modern electronics. Hopefully your VR is an upgraded electronic version.

Suspect fuel related?  :scratchchin:

That's what I'm thinking  :scratchchin:

Ok,

That coil is the right one....no problem there  :2thumbs:

What Voltage regulator are you using ?

Have you checked for spark ?

I'm running in internally regulated https://www.tuffstuffperformance.com/i-24486888-alternator-100-amp-1-wire-single-groove-pulley-factory-cast-plus-8509dsp.html

its getting spark for sure because it runs, volt meter is normal 14.3 when running

fuel is half way in sight on carb

its almost like the timing cannot advance or something.

Pop the cap loose and check rotor action. See if it springs back when moved and check for binding, a bit of oil here and there may help.

I will check this tonight...i did pull the cap the other day and moved the rotor and if I remember, it did not snap back

When I stored it in the fall it was fine if that matters lol

comet_666

So apon closer inspection, looks like the reluctor (I think its called) is chewed up, i'm guessing this got loose again and was hitting the pickup?

firefighter3931

Good detective work  :2thumbs:

Yep....the reluctor is chewed up ; but even if it came loose and was spinning on the shaft it still wouldn't have contacted the magnetic pickup.

The only way that damage can happen is if the pickup is loose on the mounting plate or the mounting plate screw itself loosened off. Either will close the gap and result in the damaged reluctor and/or pickup.  :scope:

Pull the rotor and grab the dissy shaft itself, try to move it side to side and see if the bearing is holding firm. There should be no side to side slop in any direction. (A problem I had run into with several A1 Cardone reman units.)

comet_666

ill check for wobble tomorrow... thanks for the suggestion!
Is it replaceable? I would hate to chuck this in the bin.

if these are damaged, are these the correct replacement parts?

Comet,

Yes, both of those items will work.

(1) the pickup will have to be transferred to the FireCore plate. Simply drill out the rivet that the mounts the pickup to the plate and mount it on the FC RTR plate with a new rivit. When setting the gap I like to use blue Loctite on the set screw to lock things down.

(2) the reluctor has two slots ; one for BB and one for SB. It's important to make sure the reluctor is mounted in the correct orientation. If it is mounted incorrectly rotor phasing will be off 30* and you will not be able to properly time the motor.

I did the loctite trick once on this thing already. Manufacturing defect?

comet_666

I think the pickup is ok?
How do I go about replacing the reluctor?

The reluctor wheel is pressed on and there is a small roll pin the locates the reluctor in place. You can use 2 screwdrivers opposite each other to pry up on the bottom of the reluctor wheel to move it up on the shaft. Wait until you have the replacement so you can install it correctly with the roll pin in the right spot for BB rotation.

comet_666

whats the gap between the reluctor and the pickup on these?

comet_666

So come to find out after I replaced the chewed up reluctor , re installed it and it would not fire...found out it chewed the rotor (tab on inside of rotor)
I had a spare sitting around, put it on, fired it up and set timing. just went to fire it up again...no dice...pulled cap..ate another rotor?
Any ideas why this would happen? I am ready to throw this thing in the bin and get an MSD.

comet_666

and i found the issue...
i had some wiring running right next to the distributor and the cap was not seating 100% perfectly...geez  :brickwall:

Nacho-RT74

Is that an RTR unit really ? Do they still use the stock pickup coil ?

comet_666

yes, its a RTR. Not positive but I believe its stock pickup

Nacho-RT74

And where is the "ignition module sytem" installed?
