3rd Gen Alt gages... deadly????

So I have the '72 dash out for A/C upgrade and the ALT gage catches my eye. Is it just as bad as 2nd gens?  The one in my '70 caused me years of headaches and finally did the volt model to it.

So is the 3rd gen just as bad or leave it alone (no issues since 2005)

Thanks

All ammeters are the same, just the face and indexing changes. After all these years is just about checking, mantenience and alt upgrade along with some of the wiring. Check the stickied thread you must know. Really, no need to bypass it and change to a voltimeter

If the condition of the gauge and harness is fine I see no reason to worry. The ALT gauge got a bad rap from being misunderstood. Stupid errors like charging a dead battery with the car and not maintaining wires/connections can toast things that later get blamed. Even getting labeled as an AMP gauge that it is not.  :2thumbs:

I guess you meant ALT gauge :2thumbs:

The other mistakes... source every acc added from batt side or upgrade the batt with a more powerfull one without considering the alt output able to recharge it back.

Of course after 40/50 years of use and mostly sure also abuse the best anybody can do is check the ammeter conditions inside and outside, check studs tighteness to the shunt ( abuses to the charging system can get the ammeter shunt stretched so studs some loosen ) as long as the isolator sheets on both sides of cluster housing. Yes, it gets some work since needs to get the cluster out, but is the safer.
