I had same problem, but withouth vice grips like those and was already mounted on car... so I used cable ties crossed on body to keep the seal retainer as tight as posible to the coupler body, then hammer the tabs with a flat screwdriver... so far so good still hold its place untill now. That was maybe 8 or 9 years ago.

Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

I've tried every variation of that, no good. that repair clamp is the cats meow!

I got the clamp too ( after get the seal retainer in place ), just to have it in hands for a future, just in case
