I have a green 68 survivor.  Previous owner removed the peeling vinyl roof.  Any ideas what I should do with it or leave it?  Getting little surface rust.

thank you

Simple, replace it.
agreed    , obviously with a survivor you want to do as little as possible to keep it in decent shape and safe  but if its missing all the top bite the bullet and get a new one installed
GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE WE ARE ALL STOCKED UP HERE

I think he wants to know what to do about fixing/preventing the surface rust. Sounds like everybody is suggesting just hide it with a new top, I could be wrong :shruggy:

JB400

I'd seal the rust if it isn't too bad and add a new top

Dakota Daddy

I forgot to mention it is rusted through where the roof meets the drip railing on one of the back slopes.

cdr

it needs to be fixed properly, at this point what value does survivor mean with a rusted out roof

Yeah, I'd say fix the roof properly with small patches and keep the surgery as limited as possible.  If the rear window has the typical holes at the bottom corners too this could be done as well.  The repainting could be limited to under the vinyl top and the dutchman panel (between the rear window and the decklid) if work is done carefully.  Then replace the vinyl top.

This repair is very common on Chargers.  Just document everything with pics.  If you were ever to sell it I think anyone would understand this sort of repair has to be done at some point and seeing a well done job that was minimally invasive would be a plus in anyone's book.

:iagree:

Don't let a body shop talk you into replacing a bunch of whole big panels (roof skin, quarters, etc) over small holes around the rear window area.  Original panels on a '68 Charger have inherent value these days.  And the reproduction panels never fit as well.  A well-done patch job on smaller areas is preferable.  This is a job for a dedicated resto shop, not a collision repair shop.

I've been trying to post some pictures but won't let.  Thank you all for your replies/ideas.

Get them sized to about 1-2 Meg and rename uniquely.

ODZKing

Agreed, fix the rust, paint it and replace the vinyl roof.
