1970 voltage regulator

Hello everyone!, I putting together a 1970 Charger. I say putting together, because when I bought the car, nothing was hooked up, including the guages! My question is, I have 2 voltage regulators on this car. There is the newer style electronic type with the 2 wire plug in that resembles a triangle. There is also the older ('69 and older) style regulator on the firewall also. Anyone know why? I have installed a complete Autometer guage set up. I have replaced the old ammeter with a volt meter. Anyone done this before? If so, how is the best way to hook up the wires for the alternator? The alt wiring is the last thing I need to fix. I have installed an American Auto Wire conversion kit. Everything now works fine. I hope to get the Charger on the road so I can have some fun before ol' man winter sets in!  Take care!  Jeff

Hi Nacho,  You'll have to forgive me, but I'm new to the Mopar world. I have bled Chevrolet orange for the last 35 years, and I've just now "seen the light" and bought a Charger. Anyway, my alt is a stock unit I bought from Car Quest. It has 2 field terminals and one BAT terminal.
One of the field terms has a plastic protector the other is just a spade terminal.  Thanks for the reply!  Jeff

both alts use two brushes:

single fields are one grounded bolted directly on alt housing and one isolated and with a prong.

double field alts are both isolated on plastic enclosures, both with prongs.

double fields are designed to work with electronic regulator ( 70 and laters ) for a while single fields are designed to work with mechanical regulators ( earliers )

Normally single field are roundback with pressed in Diodes, and double field alts are squarebacks with bolted diodes inside but visible from exterior, HOWEVER both are easy to modify to work with any of charging system designs.

All alts needs input creating magnetic field inside to get output, regulator is what regulates the input level to create the correct output.

single fields are constant negative by the grounded brush and wired brush gets the regulated positive by green wire.

double fields are constant positive coming directly from ignition switch by blue wire and now is negative what is the regulated source by the green wire coming directly from regulator.

There is a way to mix both regulators to work together and there is a website what explain that but honestly I don't see it usefull.

Nacho, So mine must be a single, because only one is isolated with a plastic insulator. So back to my question, why do I have both types of regulators and how do I get the charging system to work?
I haven't changed any wiring under the hood and there was plug-ins for both style regulators. On GM's (which I'm more familiar with) there is a direct connection from the "BAT" term to the battery itself. The other wires are for the guage (if internal regulated). Could I run a wire directly to the battery? If anyone has done this type of mod, I need some help.  Many thanks in advance!!!   Jeff
