The most important aero warrior?

So what do you say folks, if you had to pick the single most
significant aero car, what would it be and why?

Mine would be the four speed Charger 500 from the old Hot Rod road test because that was the car that turned me on to the whole aero car thing.  I know there are others of more importance historically but I chose to answer my question personally.   Feel free to pick either way.

Not really sure....don't have a definitive answer but I'd say the 200mph Daytona was pretty significant :yesnod:

It's got to be the 200 mph ride that Buddy Baker took in 1970 in the Hemi Daytona. :o  Nothing was the same in the motor world after that.

Personally speaking to me the most important AERO car is 409045. It would be the first Daytona that my dad bought and the first one I rode in.

As far as the famous cars go I would say that the most important one would be Jerry Service's HEMI 500 that is a 68. Thats what got the whole ball rolling in my opinion.

The stolen 4-speed 500 is the one that reportedly became the #88 Daytona.   So you are killing two birds with one stone there.   I believe both cars shown in the test were actually automatics, since the 4-speed had been liberated by then.

I'm still on the fence on that one Doug. I'm still under the impression that the stolen HEMI 500 is currently located not too far from cotton Owens shop. Just my opinion though. I'm sure you done a lot more digging on that than I have though.

Aero426

I'm just going on what I've heard, but wasn't the west coast PR car was pretty much gutted and stripped out when it was returned.  In other words, it wasn't practical to use or repair as a street car.    I know there is that other car out there, but wasn't that one recovered mostly intact.

Isn't the four speed car from the Hot Rod road test 110610?

Alaskan_TA

The one at this link;

Ugly, but close to a decade ahead of the much more common wing cars. ;-)

Yes 110610 is the 4 speed car from the Hot Rod test. Per letter from Hot Rod anyways.

Probably the most important would be the Daytona DB finally got.....which would become a tie when Danny gets his... ;D

Other than that - all of them - just puts an exclamation point on how jacked-up and crazy Detroit was back in the coolest era of muscle, music and culture to field a winner.

I have a feeling that whichever one I wind up with, will not be for a very long time. So I hope no one is holding their breath until that happens.

Danny, what is the letter from Hot Rod?  Is there a copy of it?   Is 110610 the car that Cotton got his hands on, or is that a different VIN?

I think that, for anyone who has one at home, it's that car.  it's most definitely the B5 car here for us.  the petty car is definitely the cooler car, but we've taken the dark blue one everywhere.

I do like the Pearson comment, though  ;)

Aero426

A few significant Aero Cars:  I haven't put them in any order other than separating race and street cars, but these are some personal favorites of mine.  It is late and I am sure I have missed a couple...

Race Cars:
Daytona 093 - the #88 Engineering Daytona Baker drove to 200 in March 1970
Daytona DC74 - Raced by Isaac as a '68 Charger, this car became the "first" Daytona used at the Proving Grounds.  Currently the Museum #88 at Talladega
Bobby Isaac Daytona - as covered above
Pete Hamilton Superbird (probably doesn't exist) - the 1970 Daytona 500 winner. "If" it existed, this would probably be my number 1.
Pearson Talladega  (John Slikeerveer's ex-Goodyear tire test car or Doug Schultz's restored car in California)
Wood Brothers 1971 Mercury Cyclone - a race Spoiler II in a previous life.
Ramo Stott #7 Superbird - First Superbird to win - only surviving race Bird in original configuration.  Ran all three major stock car series, won in two of them.
Marcis #30 500 / Daytona - The Winston Cup show car.  This is a good car that often slips under the radar.
Owens #6 Daytona (auto show circuit car)
Steve Atwell's race Daytona chassis - reportedly an Allison/Rossi car reskinned to a late Charger.
Jim Frederick Fly Rod Bonneville Superbird

Significant Street cars or simply ones of special interest (again no order is suggested here):
L9B287970 Daytona or other early cars like Doctona.
Q5 Daytona
X9 Black Daytona with red gut
Elmer Duellman's 304 mile Daytona (originally X9)
Malcolm A4 Daytona with red gut
Burnt Orange Superbird
Lindsley's Bonneville racer Superbird - restored to bone stock white Hemi Superbird.
Banjo Matthews or Ralph Moody's Prototype Talladegas
Bill France Signature Talladega
Bunky Knudsen Yellow Talladega
Jerry Service's Prototype 500
Jerry Service's black Hemi Daytona
Propane X 500, or Cal Gas Daytona
Bud Moore King Cobras - yellow and orange
Wellborn's Petty Blue w/ white gut Superbird - very original
Vitamin C Auto Show Superbird (where is it?)
Superbird from "Richard Petty Came Back" ad (where is it?)
Magazine Daytona with lic plate 17M-010 (where is it?)
Playboy Daytona

Redbird

Doug,

To your list I'd add the following:

1.) Sox & Martin Superbird
2.) Jack Werst Superbird
3.) Dick Brooks 305 Daytona (I know the Allison Car is on your list)
4.) Woody Walcher's Daytona-here's hoping it doesn't get restored to bone stock
5.) Vern Judy's Daytona-now restored to bone stock
6.) The white 17M-010 Superbird in promo shots
7.) The Wynn's Tor-Red Superbird (if only because the woman model was there)
8.) The original Watermellon Daytona (whatever it's origins it was and is cool)
9.) L.A./Orange County Daytona
10.) Any of Big Willie's Daytonas
11.) Charlie Glotzbach's Daytona-advertising chemicals-it was well done and crazy purple, a sign of the times

I'll add a couple more to my list:

12.) Galen Aasland's Bonneville Superbird (shameless self-promotion, it has plenty of B'ville timing tags-proving anyone could go really fast with a little thought)
13.) "Moonshine" Superbird
14.) Dan Gurney Superbird on the cover of Jan. '70 Motor Trend (I know it is 2 pictures-but the man could drive)

Weren't there several Daytona's used for the article cars in '69-'70? License plates 17M-737 and RBM-970 too?

My personal #1 is Pete Hamiltons. Tie in with Petty, but Pete stands on his own as the one who won the big ones against all the competition. To me when you build a car to win Daytona, it wins, game over.

nascarxx29

Dan Gurney was posed on the 69 daytona before they used his cover picture on Jan 70 Motor Trend for the Superbird.Plates mentioned on various daytonas are in this article in the link
