There was an ad in the local paper once about 10 or 12 years ago for one of these. It was only $1500 & very tempting to go look at. I still haven't seen one in person yet, a 2 door wagon is fairly rare. This one is really cool.

It was back in the days when they tried to anticipate what you wanted and have a car to sell in that niche.  As opposed to today where it's only profitable if it's a homerun selling car so they will tell YOU what you want.

If that's the case, I would apply that explanation to the Nomad.  Therefore, in the case of Chrysler they were more likely chasing the Nomad - two years, too late. 

I wonder if either might have been a "modern" version of the old Ford salesman (business?) coupe with no back seat.  Or could it have been a stab at contractors?

So the car that started this thread is a 59 Plymouth Suburban, and the car listed prior to this post on eBay is 59 Dodge Suburban. Did Chrysler use the Suburban name interchangeably between makes?

I own a 60 Plymouth wagon, and though I've always thought it was a Suburban, though there is not a single tag on the car that identifies it as a "Suburban".

The word Suburban was used interchangably between the various Mopar makes, it's Mopar's word for station wagon.

The Suburbans look the same to me for 1959, small differences. Is it possible that the Plymouths were 2 door models only and the Dodges were 4door models only?

I had this 59 Suburban for eight years but sold it late 2010 or early 2011 for $14,900.  I loved it!!! Had great fun with it during and after the resto-mod and drag racing.  I sold it to help cover our down payment for our home on the Big Island.  It now lives in Grand Forks, North Dakota.  The Plymouth Suburban in 1959 were 2 Door AND 4 Door models with two or three different trim styles but there were a lot more 4 Door models made.  The 1959 body style was a one year design so it took quite a while to find all the parts I needed to get it to that stage.

Wondering why didn't use a larger door similar to a Coupe. I think the Nomad's door is noticeably larger than the regular front doors

Editing, Nevermind I think they used the larger doors from coupes.

The 2-doors were aimed at salesmen, appliance/tv service people. We didn't have minivans and Chevy Suburbans were trucks.

Wow, old thread revived from ancient history of 2010 (..... now the good old days?)

I still have my 60 Plymo 11 years later. Not much has changed on the outside (original paint). On the inside I swapped the 440 for a 383, broke it, put the 440 back in it with a different clutch, and redid the seats. The heater core blew in 1989. I'll probably get around to that by the time this thread pops back up in 2032.
