4 speed console shifter

Does anyone have a shifter I can borrow. These things are freakin outrageous and I'm sure I can reproduce these for a reasonable price. I would like to borrow one and try to make these.. I'm in New Mexico and would be willi to pick it up and give a deposit if necessary.

no...66 to mid 68 used the "Inland" shifter...after that, they used the "Hurst" style....what part are you wanting?

the handles & complete mechanisms are completely different

I need a 4 speed console shifter for a 69 dodge charger rt. When I can find them they are like $300. For $20 worth of steel, some bends, and some welds. Thaught for sure 68 and 69 were the same. 70 went to pistol grip but figured it was the same shape. I have seen 67 and it looked the same too, had a hurst shifter mechanism.

Yup, just the lever. 68 and 69 were just wood knobs that threaded on the end 70 was the pistol grip, would be harder but think I could make that too. Just figured I would start with the threaded end

I'm planning to do the 70 b-body console shifters but I'll probably use stainless steel. The plan is to cut the metal with a water jet and then make the four bends (would need to heat it up). I already got the measurements from a guy who has an original shifter. Not sure if it's gonna work but if it does I want to make the DXF file (for the water jet) available for everyone.

As already mentioned above by A383Wing, 68/69/70 each uses different style/shape shift levers. Pics below. It is my understanding that later '68 models had the '69 style Hurst shifter.

If you just want a shifter for your own car and you're capable of making them, then why not just make one that feels comfy to you?  You can eyeball something close to the factory dimensions just from the pics. 


If you're serious about reproducing a batch of accurate ones, then buying one original shouldn't be a big expenditure to do it right.

You should be able to find a crappy looking old used one for a lot less than 300 bucks if you just want to measure bends

Order a new one and measure and trace it out on a piece of paper and then return it.

Wasn't that the year your knuckles hit the padding going into first......I think that's why I picked a 70 hurst to fit in mine.

Not sure if this was directed at me but I just want to make one for myself. It's not that much more work to make an accurate one if you have the measurements - which I do have. The goal is to have a shifter handle that looks as close to a factory handle as possible and still be cheaper and better quality (stainless).

I agree with you. If you have the means to make it yourself and it looks good then why not?
Plus your saving some money in the process.

Please show us pics as you make the shifter, and who knows, you may be able to sell a few.

mine have been as well...but my Inland handles do not have the "second bend" at the upper part

Yup, I was thinking about just plain steal and painting it or powder coating it interior color. Probably just buy one and then re-sell it. 69 is the correct one but I've driven them and the shift through is like 2ft. Is the 68 a shorter through ?

Very easy to correct the throw length (make it shorter):

.) get a 70 B-body pistol grip shifter mechanism - they have longer tabs to compensate for the longer handle
.) modify the shifter tabs at the transmission - drill new holes closer to the pivot. Makes shifting a little harder but shorter throw.
