So I'm sitting at home minding my own buisiness and I get a knock at the door. My daughter answers it and tells me some guys at the door. I go up to see who it is and apparently I had my garage door open because I had been going in and out of the garage doing some things
well as he was driving by (in his chevy none the less) I guess he noticed the charger in the garage.
First question out of his mouth....

So is it for sale?

Is what for sale.

The charger.

Nope, not for sale.

So what would you would you want for it?

(didn't I just tell this guy it's not for sale?) It's not for sale guy. I've just spent the last 7 years of my life restoring her and prior to that I spent the previous 25 wanting to have one. Why would I want to let go of something I spend most of my young life dreaming of having for myself?...lol

Whats it got under the hood?

440.

Is it original?

nope, It's a recreated 440 magnum, R/T, SE V1G gator grain charger. Originally it was a 383 plain jane charger.

What do you think you have into it?

15-20 I think. Haven't counted up all the receipts yet.

What do you think it's worth?

(ok, oviously another prope to find out what my price is...fine I'll play) Well seeing that I've invested at least 15-20 grand and the car means more to me than life itself I would say it would be worth somewheres around 25-30 grand.

25-30 grand! thats what I see original R/T SE's going for. Why would I pay that much for a clone?

Who say's your paying for anything. As I told you earlier...It's not for sell and that's just what I honestly believe it to be worth. Either way it's not for sale.
I have in the past pondered putting it up for a straight across trade for an unrestored originally 1970 R/T SE that I could possible start all over with but I would never let the lizard go for just cash. The car means more to me that "just for the money thing"

Hell if I had an original unrestored 1970 dodge charger r/t se why would I trade it for a non original charger?

I don't know, neither do I care. All I know is that I have a charger and you don't and I'm not selling mine. End of story.
See you later guy.

Darn, that guy gets around. He was at my front door here in GA about 2 months ago.  I wasn`t as polite, so our conversation was a lot shorter.

i wouldnt mind questions about the car but it seems very annoying how he kept acting as if you were selling it and he were buying it when you clearly stated it wasnt for sale.

Instead of saying it isn't for sale, just say $100,000. I'm really attached to my first Charger too, but for $100,000..... I think I could buy another one and get really attached to it.

Yeah.......well............thats how some cars are bought around here. :-\

I know if I saw a car sitting in the driveway / garage......   http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,24556.0.html   .....like this car. I'd stop by just to see if it was for sale..........wouldn't you? You never know.......you might pick up a 440-6 Roadrunner for cheap.....  http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,23408.0/topicseen.html   but you gotta ask. ;D

I have had more trouble with the lookie loo's at the local cruise night.  Once some guys were talking some shit about my disc brakes not being factory, but the only kid who ever came to the door was really young and asked if it was for sale.  nice kid, felt bad releasing the dog on him.  didn't want to do it......but I felt I....owed it to him...... I have no problem with people coming up and asking questions and details about the car.
It's just the people who pester you for a price and when you give um one they act like it's some outragious thing when you didn't even indicate that it was for sale anyway. The guy was just annoying.

I've had people approch me at home in the past before and ask me things about the car and complement me on the work I've done and thats cool and all. But don't pester me for a price when I tell you it's not for sale and then act like I'm over valuing it's worth when I'm not offering it for sale anyway.

From now on, I'm sticking to... it's not for sale and I don't like to identify the value of my vehicles to other people unless I know you.

It was just a little insulting. and people that do stuff like that irritate the crap out of me. know what I mean?

I understand completely. I dont mind that people stop by my house and ask if the Charger is for sale. Most of them are real nice, have interesting stories to tell, and offer to leave their #`s/names in case I change my mind. I have no problem with that. However,  I too do get testy when I tell them that it is not for sale and they insist that I give them a price. Last time that happened I responded "Why would I give you a F*N price for something that that isn`t for sale?" crude but effective.....the conversation was over at that point.

in my Chargers' back window i put two inch stick on letters that say...

"1969 Charger"

"440"

"No $"

it's cut down alot on the dumb comments and constant questions...  :yesnod:

chargerrt

When somebody asks me how much I want for my Charger I look them in the eye with a big grin and say, "How much do you have?"   I know how much my car is worth and it means alot to me, but if somebody wants to spend an asspile of cash for my car then so be it.  I would be out of debt and I could get another one in the same condition or a little nicer ;)

;) That sounds like a good idea. My brother made me a bet when he first brought his up to the front yard.  He said he'd bet me $5 that in the next week there would be someone coming up to ask about the charger.  Good thing i didn't bet  ^-^  There were 2 people and some phone calls about them in the first 4 days....

GTX

My Charger is well hidden and nobody on my block even knows I have it. When my buddy came over in his '69 though I had tons of questions after he left. Yes his car is for sale but nobody ever antes up the money, just a ton of people making lot's of noise.

I usually get a few people each year come knocking about the GTX. When I start it up with the headers uncapped it usually brings a bunch of people out of the woodwork. Most ask the standard questions but I usually run off the standard list of:
Plymouth made it
It's a '70
Yes, it looks different than a '69
It's a 440
Yes I have some money in it
I did it ( put on the blower) cuz I wanted to
No it's not for sale
No I don't race it and I haven't a clue how fast it is nor really care right now
No I don't go out to the strip with it. (I'm too busy with the Charger to do more on the 'X' right now)

After that I get to settle in a hear their stories about how they had a Charger R/S convert in high school with a 440 Hemi  or a Camaro just like mine etc..  :smilielol:
Occasionally I'll get some kid who will tell me all about his import and how it would probably kill my car. ::)

I just smile and listen and call them dumbasses after the leave but I'm nice to them.  :image_294343:

I just try to cut some slack that they even show an interest in old cars.

I'd say..."You can't afford it, it costs that much." :icon_smile_big:

Silver R/T

sounds like kid punks that were trying to "buy" my charger. They're like can we talk to your father about his charger?
Im like :no, hes not here and its my Charger
Well how much would he like for it
me: Its my Charger and Im not selling.

Some kids just dont have clue. Glad Ive got garage now and I keep it SHUT so no punks knock on door with low ball offers

I don't mind people asking about my Charger.I understand that when told no,then that should be the end of the subject.I just think some people should think about what they say on this thread before they stop at someone's house to ask about a Charger they saw in someone's back yard.If you don't like people asking you about your car, don't ask about someone else's.Usually the people who are offended about a low ball offer on their car are the same ones who want something for nothing.I hope no one gets offended by my option but that's the way I see it.

I used to live on a fairly busy side street, and i would usually get 3 or 4 people a month, stop and ask about my car. And every so offten i would come out of a store and find a business card or piece of paper with someones phone number on it under the wiper blades. You can't have an old car in plain sight and not have someone asking about it . One time i pulled the motor out to rebuild it and left the body outside without a hood on it, i had 3 to 4 people a day asking about it , that got old quick. i'm usually nice to the ones that show some respect, and the rude or odd ones, i write down thier tag number, if something comes up missing ...

Ghoste

The other part that used to drive me nuts when I had a 2nd gen, was that after you convinced them it wasn't for sale, the conversation was generally finished with a suggestion that I paint it orange and put a 01 on the door.
Apologies to GL fans, it just drove me nuts is all.

Nope, not for sale.

some people are just plain stupid. Dress it up anyway you like, idiots roam the planet. As soon as he came back with the "So what would you want for it?" after the "Nope, not for sale." you had one on your hands. Trying to be polite and carrying on the conversation just digs one in deeper to the idiot's world. ;D

Let's all remember that alot of us use to do the same thing.I remember knocking on doors and asking questions myself back in the day! :yesnod:........But I don't think I really went far enough to the point of nagging the owner of the car I inquired about either!

Great job you did fending off the tire kicker, Lizard. I've had many idiots question me numerous times. One guy kept pestering my wife at Carlisle about my '70, I wasn't at the car at the time. She finally told him, "A MILLION bucks!" He told her she was nuts & walked away. That was one way to get him to shut up.

I'd just be leery to divulge TOO MUCH info to a complete stranger who knocks on your door questioning about the car. Like, whaddya have into it, is it original/numbers matching, how much do you have in receipts, etc. This inquisitive stranger could appear harmless on the outside, but could also be a thief scoping out his next swipe. If he knows you have big bucks in the car, maybe you have more valuables inside the house as well.
Paranoid? Maybe so. But you can never be too careful in today's world with these cars.
