Hello everyone,
I am just about ready to paint my 69 Charger RT. Its been a long time coming.
I'm not concerned about originality with this car - I want to make something unique and special.
The color choice I am making is the same color used on Nash Bridges 71 cuda. The car will have a white top, white interior, white RT stripe.
I've dug through the web only to find the color is referred to as School Bus Yellow. My paint guy says he has 47 shaded of SBY.
If anyone knows the paint code I should be looking for, I would really appreciate it.

As far as I know the color was suppose to be Curious Yellow code #GY3 but when originally painted this color it came out to light on film so they redid it a darker color so it would look right on film or something like that. What it looks like in person & on film/TV is 2 different things. LEON.

Although, i don't know the paint code, as leon said directors, etc, wasnt happy with the way curious yellow looked on film so they repainted the cars. The only thing I have ever read is they used Sherwin Williams "School bus Yellow". No code was given but I read that in a book about tv/movie cars. On a side note they said Don Johnson's personal favorite was a built 360/4 speed car, that was used for up close filming, and all the "sounds" of the car was recorded off a car that had a 440 with flowmasters. But in my opinion that color looks alot like mopars butterscotch/bahama yellow.

My cousin actually worked as a PA on that show for a couple years.
He has said the Cudas didn't look very appealing in person partly because of that paint shade. He said it was sort of a maize color. It had more of an orange/tan tint than what showed up on TV. It was definitely chosen for its looks on developed & printed film and nothing else.
As a GL fan, I can vouch for the fact that film can tint colors A LOT more than you'd ever expect. It can literally cause enough of a shade/tint difference to make Vitamin-C orange look like Hemi Orange sometimes.
The real problem is that orange/yellow/red is too close to a skin color. And when doing the color timing/printing, the film processing people always have to make the skin tones look perfect or else it's too obvious & objectionable. But that often means sacrificing the correctness of other things on the film that are near to skin tones.
Unless you've got some specific reason to want that exact color (for a Nash replica, or a car that's also being used on film, or something?), then I wouldn't go after that specific yellow.
If you just want a brighter & higher-impact yellow than the factory Plymouth shade, then you'd probably be much happier choosing one some other way. (Modern 'Vettes have a really good one, for example.)

Excellent points. Mike, I agree, I saw an 07 vette yesterday that was a very nice high impact yellow.
I am the fortunate owner of a 68 super bee and I recently restored it, painted to its original yellow (sunfire) and I like it but for this car I want something deeper to offset the white roof and interior.
I am looking into the butterscotch/bahama yellow now.

If you really want that color, one of the members on www.cuda-challenger.com owned that very Cuda (the main one used on the show) for some time. He recently sold it. I forget his name, but if you post this same thread over there. The members will have you hooked up with him in no time. |

Hey everyone, the car has color!
I ended up going with the tri stage Lamborghini pearl yellow. As this was my first spray, I borrowed a SATA gun which was awesome. Other than a few runs in the clear, it turned out incredible. Inside the shop it looks yellow but in the sun it looks more orange. The pictures don't do it justice.
Thank you all for giving me the advice along the way. Next step is to finish the color sanding and then 4 stages of polishing!

Definitely. White top, white interior, white stripe. I'm searching for the best tire/wheel combo and am liking the 18" billet magnums from American Racing. They are damn expensive though...
