We need more input on this front windshield upper chrome trim clip debate....

8 on the top or 8 + 2 "special" clips?

Chris,
I'm gonna post Mike's thread again.  Page one might have some info to get your brainstorming going.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Just 6T9 CHGR

Mike, I have seen & re read the thread numerous times.  The FSM & parts manual makes no mention of these "extra" clips.....

No one is at this point in their resto???

I got my windshield out, and I do not have those two "special" clips, nor do I have a hole for them...
the windshield clip set I bought from legendary only had two different clips...

I've got the glass out of the 68 at the house.  I'll check when I get home today.

chargerkid01

I busted the windsheild out of my charger (it was spidered when I got the car)then we to the chrome off I don't remember those clips either of course my grandpa finished the rmoval while I was in the hospital getting glass removed from my eye. Note to self do it the right way!!

Shakey

Mine has been out for some time however the SS trim was not installed and there were no fasteners in place.

I'll look through some of my salvage yard photos to see if I have any close up reference shots that may reveal something.

Shakey

Some general photos that may or may not help.  You'll have to look real close or try and zoom in somehow.

Im almost thinking this a second half of the year '69 thing, possibly going into the '70 model year......my car has an SPD of 4/30/69 :scratchchin:

Gonna look in the 70 parts book...

My windshield is out.. I have 10 holes. My car was build JAN 13 69.

Now I have a problem, I did only save the best clips, and they all are the "normal" type :brickwall:
So now I'm in desperate need of those two "special" clips :brickwall: :brickwall:

Welcome to the club Bronzy ;)

Looking in the '70 parts manual (which is a huge PITA over the 69 manual) it makes no reference to any other numbered clip nor does it give an amount needed...just gives the generic "AR" (as required)

So Chris and I aren't insane. I agree that it may be probable that the use of this clips is aligned to some build date....or perhaps specifically to the assembly plant? All 70s were built in St. Louis. I know 69s were not exclusive to one plant....maybe that is the angle?

So much for that theory. Or maybe it was a Hamtramck practice that was adopted by St Louis the following year.

Yeah Hamtramck for me as well...Brian (UFO) looks likje some early dates there as well (blows out my possible after Jan 1st theory)

Ok - Checked - 10 along the top, 26 total.

1'st one on top starts about 1-3/4" from the corner, next one 4-1/8" from the corner.

The car is over an hour away but I'll try and get some pics. It was reported all the clips were the same style - are people seeing a couple of different types? Clips are still installed - original windshield was removed by us for the first time....in one piece! There were a couple of nervous moments but we got it out. Were the measurements above not good enough? Do you need to know what are on the side?

Yes there are different clips on the top.....there are 2 unique clips that are installed in the second position from either side....

See this thread for comparison pics of mine....

Chris I looked at mine. They all look the same across the top.
Maybe maxwellwedge will have different results.
Also looked into the service bulletins, there's one for wind noise but it deals with the vent window.

maxwellwedge

All the clips across the top of mine are 100% identical. Maybe yours was done doing a period when 2 vendors clips were being mixed in or the one vendor changing their design slightly. The interesting thing would be to compare an early vs mid vs late production clip to see if there is a difference.

Dodge Don

The "special" clips are located in a unique spot in the sequence of holes and are right where the top SS trim contours around the top corner. I don't think it was a supplier issue, rather, a fit for purpose issue.  :Twocents:

Are yours installed/spaced similar to the dimensions of my clips?

Just 6T9 CHGR

Ill measure mine tomorrow...when I got my clip set 10 years ago from Dave Ferro @ Totally Auto, he's the one that told me about the special clip that is mounted in the second inboard position....

We have established that 10 clips on the top is the norm for a lot of cars (even though the parts catalog only calls for 8 up top)

Next issue would be the use of this different clip

Both you and Dodge Don have these "special clips" and both are from Farro. My gut tells me to go with what is found on original cars and not to listen to Farro.   :icon_smile_big:  But - I will check my other 2 Chargers for the heck of it.

No you are missing the main point. My car came from the factory with these special clips. I have the original special clips that I removed off my car. My windshield had never been removed prior to my resto.

Totally Auto just happens to be the only ones who include these special clips in their clip packages.

maxwellwedge

Sorry - didn't read that......I guess we are back to checking other cars...I have 2 more to check and a friend has a couple others that are coming apart. Do you think it may have been dealer installed because of a service bulletin or does the spacing look natural? I doubt that though - the windshield pretty well has to be pulled to install those clips. Just thinking out loud here. Dodge Don, you may have mentioned this earlier - when you removed your original windshield did you note the difference and the position of these clips or notice after removal?

I noticed while I was removing however failed to note the exact location of each clip. Which isn't like me....I may have recorded it and now cannot find it. Shakey knows how psycho-detailed I am....so my error. :shruggy:

Chris,

I pullled my stock windshield last year and my rusty original clips are located exactly as yours.......
Built date is 9/19/1968 @ Hamtrack
The crappy side of the story is I forgot to bring my camera so I could 'nt take any pictures... So I can't tell you guys what clips mine has....

This thread had me running to the car to check and I have a 68 with ten hole on top. It sounds like all the same up top will look fine since some are that way, but, I'm obsessed enough to let the "special" clips wig me out. Has anybody determined the actual location of the two oddball clips? :shruggy:
Oh no, it's gonna be a driver! ;)

oldcarnut

Old thread new question.  I didn't find any related in the search.  My 70 RR had 26 clips.  10 top 10 bottom and 6 side.  Outer 3 on each side on top were different.  Clip kits I saw came with 24 for all 68-70 B-Body and I checked again and it seems that's all listed.  Any ideas is this is correct with 3 on each side instead of just the 2nd hole as previously shown?  I looked in a couple FSM and couldn't find specifics.  Pictured are the 3 types old ones next to the two types of new I received.  I dont know for certain if they had ever been replaced before but I didn't think so.
