Title: '68 Charger R/T #'s Matching Rebuild
Post by: BLUE68RT4ME on March 20, 2009, 11:41:48 PM
Well, figured I'd start my thread tonight.  I'm in the beginning processes of restoring my Charger.

A bit of history, my first car was a 66 Coronet 500, 383 2 bbl w/727 given to me by my father.  He worked a lot to get that car and from the time I was about 11 or 12 it was my dream to own.  Washed and waxed it just for fun, hoping someday I'd get to drive it.  Never thought I'd truly own it.  Well, turned 16 and that morning my dad handed me the title as I was eating breakfast before school.   :o  Words can't describe that moment.  Anyway, it needed some work by now and we slowly started working on it.  I put a 440 I got from a 68 Imperial in it and about 2 months later a wind storm came through and dropped a tree on it.  I was devistated.   :'(  A couple years later I found another body that was really solid and had it painted like mine.  But then, getting out of technical school and trying to make a go of it I ended up running into money problems and had to sell them both.   :rotz:

For the next 6 or 7 years I let life lead me away from the love I had for cars.  My dad passed away in early '02 and I tried to get the cars back but things didn't work out.  I moved on but started to realize later that it was a void in my life that I couldn't let continue, and with the memories of my dad and I going to car shows, working on cars, and RACING cars (when mom wasn't around!  :icon_smile_big: ) I had to have another car.  Not only for my enjoyment, but to keep the feeling of dad around.  Well my cousin's fiance worked at a Mopar shop in town and they had a bunch of sweet Mopars, especially his blown, 1060 HP 69 Hemi Charger!  So, I told him I was looking for a car and my favorite since I was a kid, even before the Dukes believe it or not, was the Gen II Charger.  My dad lived and breathed Mopar so he definitely had his influence.  He dragged a 71 340 Demon, and a Duster, and he used to race dirt track too.

Ok, getting back on track, my cousin's fiance started calling me when he acquired something I might like.  He found an orange 68 Charger with a 383 Magnum but it needed more work than I had time for, at that time, and it was not something that was a strong driver until I could work on it.  Then he showed me a 73 Charger that was actually quite sharp but I wasn't as into that style, so I passed again.  Then, along came Blue.  He called to tell me about it and it was out of the price I wanted to spend but it was a numbers matching car and, with the "family discount" it was a deal I could not pass up.  Not only that, but it ran strong and didn't need to get into the shop immediately.

So, I bought it and now, a year and a half later, my best friend Aaron and I are working on tearing it down and restoring it.  I'm 1400 miles away at the moment, but will be returning over Easter weekend to take some pic's to share.  Currently, all the panels are off getting soda blasted.  Once they're returned and cleaned up, then the shell is off for blasting.  Once we get that back, and repaired, it's time to start putting it all back together again.   :icon_smile_big:  Here are the pics I have of it prior to tear down and then two of the shape it's in now, from a very cheap camera phone.  Anyway, after Easter I'll have much more to post but here we go!

P.S.  The plates were from the previous owner!

Here's a few more.  You'll notice some rust in these pics, especially in the rockers.  As well, some body work in the rear quarters and someone previous to me and my friend owning it decided to put 69 rump stripes and R/T emblems on the back.  That will be changed and I'll have a couple emblems for sale soon, any takers???   :icon_smile_wink:

I also have different wheels on it now... well, not now but since these pics.  I have the same design but in 15's, the backs are 15X10 I believe, and very tall.  Eventually I'll change those too.

Mark,

That looks like a great project! Should be a ton of fun building that one back up.

Hey man that looks like my car!  I know it's my garage, what gives?  Sorry man had to say it.  Glad to see things are going in the right direction for you.  I will keep an eye on this link to see the changes to my, I mean your car.  I am still suffering from whip-lash from my first ride in this car, but I hope I can still get a ride when this beast is done

Beast??? Shhh!!!  Don't talk like that! She might hear you!  And by the way, if you were a good host you'd have been underneath scraping off all that undercoat so Aaron and I didn't have to!   :nana:

People, it's hard to find good friends these days!   :smilielol:

Hey F5 and Jdiesel   , thanks for your remarks.  It is a really solid car, it should be a pretty fun restoration.  There is a floor board issue on the drivers side, and a few spots that will need some work, but nothing like what I've seen others have to struggle though.  I'll have more pics in about 10 days or so.
Take care and thanks for stopping by!

Ok, so I was able to get back to the car over the weekend for some pics.  The fenders, doors, hood, and trunk deck are still at the soda blaster.  Hoping to get them done this week.  This is what I have to work with for a main shell.

I'll start with the front fender wells.  They were rusted beyond repair so you won't see them here, they hit the garbage immediately.  On the driver's side, there was some rust that someone previously tried to fix with fiberglass.  We found fiber glass in a few areas, but that's not too much of an issue I guess.

Here's the rear window.  There's a little patch work to do but WAY better than we expected.  These have really been a bad spot with many, including the '69 that I just bought.  Oh, did I tell anyone that yet?  I just bought a '69 Charger to build after this.  That one isn't #'s matching so I'm building that one the way I want.  This one I can't justify customizing considering its numbers matching.

This doesn't look too bad for the battery area, despite the area I've pointed out with the arrow.  That will be a pain to try to repair just because the metal is folded and so thin.

As for the fender tag, can anyone tell me what the additional tag specifies?  I'm not familiar with the additional tag.  Any input will be much appreciated!   :icon_smile_big:

Here is one area of concern.  The floor pan had some major battles with Minnesota salt.  Someone bolted these plates in and caulked around the edges.  I knew this was here when I bought it, I just hate looking at it.  Well, it shouldn't be too difficult.

Ahh yes... and if any of you saw my post in the paint and body section of the sight in regards to the rear valance, here's a good shot with the bumper removed.  Aaron tapped on the corner to see how bad they were.  Tap, tap , POP!   :o  :hah:  Yeah, they were bad.  Looks like there's new metal all the way around the back.  Sounds like AMD does ok on the valance, am I right?  It's just the corners that can be a pain from what I've learned on here.

Here's a shot of the roof.  Gotta love the 70's, huh?  Why couldn't he have just got an antenna with a magnet???   :eek2:  Instead he drilled a hole in the roof.  Breaker-breaker.... NOT COOL!   :brickwall:  Oh well, at least it's easy to fix.

And below is the drivers rocker panel.  That seam has seen better days.  Aaron said we'll probably just make one rather than buy a full one.  We have access to a small brake.  Hopefully he remembers to keep his fingers out of the way!   :smilielol:

Finally, here's the trunk floor.  There's a few peek holes in the vicinity of the arrow but not bad otherwise.

Unrelated to the bodywork... what the heck is this???  Was it popular to put ugly carpet in the dash to replace missing components?  Anyone got the part that goes here?  I'm in the market!  ;)  I don't even know what the piece is called.

That would be great Paul!   :2thumbs:  Thanks for the offer.  Please let me know if you go back and what you find.  I'll be happy to compensate you for it!   :woohoo:

I slipped through MTKA last weekend on my way to and from seeing my family in South Dakota.  Hopefully I'll be able to take some time and relax next time I'm back!  Look out Big Island!   ;)

We have plenty of work left to do so we won't need it immediately but if the soda blaster gets off his butt we should be able to start working on the main shell in about a 4-6 weeks.  Sounds like that would be perfect.  Let me know when you go back home.  Thanks man! :2thumbs:

You definately started out with more than i had on my first charger.

I was just curious how much did you pay for it?

I recently replaced my inner fenders and I still have the old ones. They were not in terrible shape but decided to replace them anyway. I believe some parts of my old fender have a similar contour to the rusted out area on the rad support. If they do I could cut out a section and mail it to you. Take a look at your inner fenders and see if this is an option for you.

Cheers,

James

Hey everyone, so the latest update here is that the doors, fenders, trunk and hood were finally soda blasted this week!  Now we can get to some serious work again.   :2thumbs:  I've also managed to pick up some parts I've been missing with help from many people on this site, i.e. #'s matching intake, carb, new springs, shocks, torsion bars and, as you've seen, the dash pieces and radiator support.  I also picked up a rear valance off ebay for about $130 less than from Year One.  All-in-all, things are going well.

I've put together my "Wish List" on Year One's site... looks like I'll be dropping about $2500 real sooon.  Anyone know how willing they are to discount on big purchases like that?  I'm assuming that shipping will be no small number either.

Well, I hope everyone's enjoying the start of summer.  With any luck, I'll be on the road in August.  We'll see what happens.   :icon_smile_big:

Yeah, YearOne's shipping costs are HIGH so at least you will expect that.   Mopar_Nut is shipping that drivers side inner fender that he took off of his car.  I just need an area near the battery tray and I'll be good, so that worked out.   :2thumbs:  So it sounds like you'll be pretty busy on the car this summer with all those parts coming in.  Good luck!   :yesnod:

Well, I've returned from New York and had a chance to get back to the car.  Aaron had gotten some time in on it; after the fenders, doors, hood and trunk deck got back from soda blasting he was able to get the work done on most of them... The hood needed to have the holes filled in from the hood pins that were present before and one of the doors needed a little attention but not bad.  He wasn't able to get to the drivers fender or the trunk deck yet but they won't require too much work.  The fender requires a couple patches but is pretty solid and the trunk deck needs a new lip put on where the rear fold is located in the back.

As for the main portion of the car... well, let's just say we now have a good idea of "what lies beneath"!  We grabbed the torch and scraper and went to town on the undercoating and... ah-hem... the fiberglass that was covering up all the previous work done to the quarters, fender wells, and the door rail.  After that we started sand blasting the remaining undercoat where we could.  I had to stop short of finishing but hope to get back towards the end of this week and finish that and send it off to soda blasting.

Here's some pics of that damages followed by the accomplishments.  Everything primed is ready for blocking as soon as we get it back on the car.  Here we are...

The floor pan after removing the patch... Oof!

Ground out the bondo around the drivers quarter, talk about recessing the seams! There's more than a half inch between my finger and the brazed seam!

Ok, so after some provocation by Paul, I finally got the motivation to post another update.  Sorry it's been so long.  There has been some good progress, yet it seems to come little by little sometimes.  Aaron works on it when he runs out of the high priority jobs for him and the boys.  Guess it would cost me more if I were a high priority so I'll live with it.   :shruggy:

So, since last post the rest of the body has been soda blasted.  Aaron sealed all the areas we sandblasted before so don't be confused by the yellow sealer.  I didn't swap for a yellow car like some of my Chevy "friends" thought at first.   :slap:  I took some pics of the areas in the front that were uncovered and needed some attention.  Most of these spots have been completed.  Oh, and we decided to buy another front fender for the drivers side as we figured with as much money and time we're putting into this car we might as well be putting the best quality on it.  The fender was not bad, but if anything was going to start bubbling 4-5 years down the road it would be that.

Other than the area in the radiator support frame that Paul helped me acquire a patch for, everything in the front is about complete and we're headed towards the rear of the car now.  Here are the pics I have.  Please forgive me, some of them are poor quality from my cell phone.

Here's a few shots after soda of the rear.  Look at the sail panel.  They cut a section out of another and patched it in with the original lead still in the patch.  Strange to see. :shruggy:

So, including the fender, I just bought $3100 worth of parts from Year One.  They had a 15% discount going on, and with the additional 10% I got for being over $1000 I got 25% off, which basically paid for the shipping.  Some of the parts were on back order but everything we really need is coming in right away.  We're talking 1/4 floor pan, trunk pan, outer wheel houses, trunk extensions, valance corner caps, etc.  So, now all I need is to kick Aaron in the butt and get him off all those high paying jobs to work on mine!   :smilielol:  I bought him and his wife Vikings tickets here at the dome this weekend so I'm going to butter him up as much as possible all weekend! :)

Ok, so here is how she sat as of Saturday night.  Talk about swiss cheese!  Hope you brought some crackers!  ;) It's great to see progress, right?  The quarters were just rough cut for the moment, more to be done soon.  Looking forward to the progress after this because now we're building rather that doing demo.   :2thumbs:

Yes, I know-I know... I'm looking for updates too!  :)  I talked to Aaron yesterday and he was and his wife were at the hospital.  His wife is 6 months along and she was having complications.  This will be their first child, and its not been easy.  He's one of my best friends and the last thing I'm worried about is my car right now.  That said, he said that before he left he told his boys to dive into it so there may be some progress underway.

I'm now working in South Carolina so I won't be back to see it until Christmas.  By then we might see some good progress.  He wanted to get paint on it in January so we'll keep our fingers crossed.  Until then my only reports will be words rather than pics.  I'll keep you posted but please keep him & his wife in your thoughts.  :2thumbs:

Dylan Charles was born yesterday morning weighing in under 3 lbs.  He's going to spend a lot of time in the hospital so Aaron will be quite busy.  It seems everything is going pretty well, all things considered.  I'm going to be more concerned with his baby than mine so I may not have much for progress to post for a while.  Your thoughts are appreciated!   :2thumbs:

Well, Aaron's baby is doing quite well considering.  He's nearly up to 6 lbs. and should be arriving home within the next couple of weeks.

As for my baby, they have been making progress on it.  The frame rails are now completely repaired, the outer wheel houses are removed and the new ones are clamped in place until it's time for welding, the rocker panels are done, and the trunk floor is ready to be put into place.

Sorry I don't have any pics to post right now but I'll do what I can, when I can.  I'm 1600 miles from the car so hopefully Aaron can send some to me between now and Easter so I can share them with all of you.

Until later...   :2thumbs:

Here is the latest cell pic from Aaron.  I guess the other side was aligned and ready for welding but this side was still in process.  Everything is still just screwed together at this point but it's progress! ;)

Hello everyone!  It's time to dust off this thread and get back to it!  ;)  Wow, it's been nearly 7 months since my car has been touched but Aaron has finally started working on it again.

They finally got all the rear sheetmetal aligned and screwed together and have started welding the trunk floor in place.  I don't know how long that will take but it's certainly the last big hurdle before the filling process can begin.

My roommate has also torn my seats apart and is recovering them while he has some time off from work.  He should have them done in short time as he's really good at that.

I can't attach pictures from my phone but will try when I can at home!

Steady as she goes, I've gotten progress two out of the last three days!!  You won't hear me complain about that!   :2thumbs:  The outer wheel house on the drivers side is now in place, just a few tacks left for the quarter extension and then it's off to the other side which is in about the same condition as the previous photo above.  Their hope is to have quarters on by weeks end which, in my mind, is rather aggressive knowing how things can change in an instant but I'm not going to discourage him!  :icon_smile_big:

Well, brushing off the dust on my thread here.  Here is a little more progress.  Once they finish up the drivers quarter the only body work left up top, other than final blocking, is to finish around the rear window and one spot on the passenger side pillar base.  They still have to get back underneath and clean up around the new floor insert on the drivers side but then the rear end comes out and the underside gets primed and painted.  Then the front end comes off and the same will be done, as well as replacing all the bushings and ball-joints.  After that, I think you guys get the idea.  Here are some pics...

We were supposed to have a tractor pull Sunday.  It was rescheduled from a rain out last week, yep it got rained out again on Sunday.  My wife talked about heading up because neither one of us had ever been there.  We figured there was too much stuff to do around the yard so we decided to stay home and work.
We do plan on getting to Anoka this summer so I think we should all try to meet there sometime.

Wow this thread got dusty!  Well, here's my update... I am in the process of rebuilding the tranny as I write this; it's right here on the floor in front of me.  The power steering pump and unit have been sent off to Firm Feel for some nurturing and they will return with all sorts of friends to help rebuild the front end.

As for the car.  All the detachable panels have been blocked 4 times and ready for paint.  The body has been blocked twice, with two more shots to go.  The plan for the upcoming Thanksgiving break is to tear the K-frame off to disassemble all the suspension, sand blast it, and repaint it.  Then, paint the engine bay, and the motor as well.

From there, Aaron's guys will work on painting the undercarriage by Christmas and when I return for Christmas we plan to paint the rest of it and start reassembling the car.   :2thumbs:

He got the paint from PPG and while I was there we opened up the can to take a look at it.  The paint looked amazing despite being THE WRONG COLOR!   :slap:  Aaron went back to PPG and they sent a color from the late 80's by mistake.  So, they sent the correct stuff recently and it was a match.  Looks good, I can't wait to see it on metal!

I have a couple pics of the car after a coat of dura-blast but they're on my phone so I can't put them up at the moment.  Hang tight, the rock is starting to roll again!

I know, I'm working on it.  This was from Aaron's cheap camera phone.  He said he'll send a couple more tomorrow of individual panels close up so we get a better look at the color.  I was there on Friday to see them spraying sealer on them.  Everything looked really good.  I'll keep all of you posted.

Ok, so we actually have progress to show.  All the body work is done.  We have paint on the undercarriage, the engine bay, and the interior.  Also, the rear end and suspension are done, the k-frame and linkage have been painted, and we're hoping to have the front end together with engine in place by the end of the coming weekend.

My steering wheel and billet wheels have come in.  I pick up the wheels with the new KDA NT's on them tomorrow.  For now here are some pics...

So, yes... all the suspension is painted, rebuilt, and reassembled.  Things are looking great.  As of Saturday, we had the engine and tranny together and installed in the car.  We also got some wiring done but not shown here.  Hoping to have the fenders and hood on by the end of the week and then paint it next weekend.  The weekend after we are hoping to fire up the motor.  Keep your fingers crossed!

Alright!  Don't make me come over thiere!   ;)

The interior is black with silver pleats.  Everything but the headliner is pretty much ready to go.  We'll get that going next week and then put everything else in.  Trying to get the motor started this weekend.

When I bought it the paint was so faded I really didn't get a good feel for the color of QQ!.  Now that I see it on the car, it's definitely one of the greatest colors of blue I've seen!  I can't believe they only used it one year.  (well, unless I'm mistaken.  I don't think it was on the Charger more than one year anyway!)

My R/T was a QQ1 car, still has a few patches left on it in the trunk and around the front rails, I'm happy with the black on it but would be well impressed if it was still Blue .
Great thread, have been enjoying following your build

Good news, after a very strong effort of Saturday we got fire!  We got it all wired and played around with problems here and there but at about 8:15 p.m. central time we found the ground wire that wasn't grounded well and she popped off without any help.  As soon as gas got to the carb it fired and never looked back.  That girl screams thanks to all the help from Mr. Porter.  I can't wait to get it on the street!  We're still plugging away, but now I'm a bit excited! :icon_smile_big:

I was looking for your car on Saturday, didn't see it, did I miss it?

Only if you were coming from South Dakota! lol  It is not complete.  I am a little disappointed but oh well.  The interior is just about complete.  I believe they are sanding and buffing it this week.  We had to play with the timing a bit and I still can't get that darn cast aluminum trans pan to seal up.  Ugh!  Trick Shift isn't free!  :icon_smile_blackeye:

Anyway, I plan to take it to Troy over at the R/T Garage in Prior Lake after I am done.  He is a friend, an amazingly intelligent Mopar guru (both he and his wife have been written up in Mopar Collector's Guide independently), a great mechanic, and also the inventor of the Rev-n-nator.  I'm going to have him put one in my car and work out some of the other gremlins I've got lurking under the hood and in my wiring.  If no one knows, I actually bought this car through him.

Anyway, I'm sorry I missed you guys.  I was actually out in the swap area.  My buddy and I rented a couple spots to sell our stuff.  As luck would have it, we ended up being neighbors with Galen Gavier!  That was great!  He and his fiance were very kind.  He also made sure no one tried to jip us on anything.   How great it was to know that man has your back!  haha!

I had a great time despite not having my car there but I WILL make the picnic.  Please let me know if the date is set!

Haven't heard anything about the picnic yet, its a busy summer so we'll see how it goes.

I vote that the charger picnic is NOT on a weekend in August.  September would be much easier for me.   :Twocents:

I was almost at the show this year.  Driving my Charger home in 494 traffic from work Friday i come up along a Yellow Daytona 4-dr charger and sure enough Lee is driving.  That was the extent of my getting together with MN Charger people. :P

Mark the Charger looks great!  I love blue Chargers.   :2thumbs:

Thanks!  At the Mopar show in the twin cities last summer I ended up in the swap lot next to Galen Govier.  I told him I was looking for a new car and he had all sorts of good things to say about the new Chargers with the V6 and told me to check them out.  When I did, the dealership had just finished putting these stripes on and after driving it I was pretty much sold!
