Seeing the passion several others have for these unique cars, I'm surprised to have not ran across more toy and memorabilia postings. I have a decent sized wing car diecast collection, and I know I'm not the only one who collects them, so where are the photos? A thread showcasing some of the offerings out there would be pretty cool, I think. Am I the only one?
I got something similar called eagle race 1/43 and others as seen in tote in front of coronet on hoods of both cars.Trying to thin collection down .As no longer have room

I have a couple of closets filled with 1/18 scale & smaller diecasts & models. I also have a few bigger 1/10 scale versions as seen in the pictures compared to the last 1/18 scale diecast that I purchased... the #71 K&K Daytona that I bought at the Aero Car event at Monster Mopar.
Great stuff! Nice to see them start to come out of hiding. Here are a few of my 1/18 scale Daytonas
1 of 1 prototype that Diecast Deals received from Ertl for final approval. changes made before production included closed headlights, redline tires, black interior, and correct A-pillars.
the muscle machines daytona is a custom piece, made from a regular charger. castline never offered a daytona in 1/18th scale.

Lots of interesting and collectible pieces in that mix. That clear slot car body is the only toy from the links and photos so far that I do not have. I've seen it a few times, but haven't bought one yet. In your bottom left photo, there are three larger scale Daytonas (white, yellow, green) that I've never seen before. Are those wood carvings or?
I remember getting a red SSP "Super Stocker" 'bird for Christmas as a kid, but the wing met with disaster on the school playground. Over the years, I've gathered five of the six colors they came in. I'm missing the orange one, but that color is hard to find on ANY ssp, let alone the 'bird.
The old thread that you linked to was one that I mentioned in my first post. I almost added to it, but didn't want to drag an old one to the front page since interest in it had waned. Wing car items are all that I collect, and I have over 1000 different pieces. I like sharing and exchanging photos of the toys, but do not know how receptive the folks here are to the idea.

I have several 1/18 scale wingcars but I'm still trying to find a 1/18 scale black Superbird. I think it was an American Muscle diecast. Anyone have one that they would part with?
There are two options for a black one. The Ertl "Blackbird" car came without the vinyl top, and 402 were made. A later, and more easy to find, release came in Johnny Lightning packaging, after JL was taken over by Ertl. This car is the Ertl casting with a few detail changes, including the vinyl top. There were also two different black chrome cars, one being an early chase piece and the other released by Diecast Collectibles.

The vinyl covered cars are an interesting story. I got my first one on ebay, and was amazed with the car once it arrived. I started corresponding with the seller afterwards and found out he worked at a vinyl sign shop, at which he cut all of the pieces to do these customs. Over time, he and I worked out a large package deal for the cars you see here. He had duplicate sets of the wraps for most of the cars I have, so I purchased a LOT of donor cars, and he set out to create cars for the both of us.
The entire process took nearly two years to complete, and during that time he left the vinyl shop to take a position with an architectural firm. Before leaving, he cut out enough stock to finish all of the cars I had already sent him. He would create one car for me and an identical car for himself to sell, usually on Ebay. My cars arrived a few at a time over the two year period, but he fulfilled his end of our deal with the finished products you see here.
I wish I had come across his work sooner, so that I could have built an even larger fleet. The photos here truly do not do the cars justice. He also did a few Charger 500's, but the donor cars were harder to come by for those. In hindsight, I wish I had sought those out, too. Out of all his wing car customs that I've seen over the years, there is only one variation I do not have. A third party had it listed on Ebay in the last year or two, and the bidding went crazy before I dropped out to the eventual winner. I had bid way too much for it in relation to the cost of the ones I already had, but later found out it went to the family of the real car's driver. That was a small consolation, but at least it made sense of why the other bidder was so intent on buying the car.
Nowhere near as interesting as some of the cars pictured in this thread, but here's one on the shelf at my shop next to a clone of my Charger.

Great thread. Even though I'm mostly in to 1:18 I do really like the pinewood derby car, and those slot cars, wow. Nice!
For those that mentioned "slimming down" their collections, we do buy partial 1:18 collections from time to time. If anyone is interested call us at 763/425-6020 Mon-Fri. Maybe could even do some trading for 1:18 winged cars that we have, or have coming in... Just a thought.
Thanks for all of the kind words. Like many others, I was into model car building from way back when. I started collecting Mopar diecast and memorabilia in the late 1980's while working at a dealership. At first, I collected every model of every body style, in any scale or color. After the diecast industry took off, the overwhelming number of variations (and some downright goofy looking releases) eventually led me to narrow my focus to collecting just wing car items.
Like Jim, I am also fond of the 1/18 scales, and the Big Willie cars that his company is releasing will find their way to me eventually. Other than the gold plated (and mega-dollar) ones from Supercars, I have about every 1:18 scale wing car ever made, and even some that never were, like the 1/18th Muscle Machines Daytona I posted near the beginning of this thread. It seems like there was also an orange chromed one I missed out on. Counting the customized ones, I have 117 different wing cars in 1/18th scale. Six of those are a complete set of Superbird convertibles that I'd be willing to part with, but the rest of them are here to stay.
My wing car obsession didn't just randomly happen, and I can still remember the first time I ever saw one.
'Tis the season....

I purchased a couple of the painted cars from a Jim Heller, and recall he had several different wing car decal sets at the time. Heller used to have a website, but I'm thinking it has since gone away. He does still sell on Ebay (http://myworld.ebay.com/jimheller/), so it should be possible to contact him through there, to see what he still offers.

I only quoted part of your post, but it made me think of the first ones I saw. When I was an exhaust tech at the local Montgomery Wards auto center, one of the real tech's had a Green Daytona. Also an Orange Superbird. This was back in 1971 or so. I'm sure my jaw dropped as I stood and stared... something I'll never forget.

the first one (the 1 of 1000 car) is the wrong color, as doug pointed out. the later release is accurate, but only 402 were made. DiecastDeals.com, out of Florida, released the car (in 2005, i think). Their old website now links back to their ebay store, which does not show one listed. I'd drop them a message, and see if perhaps they could still have one around. The Ertl model number is 29492, if that helps to search for one.

will these carrera cars run on the old marx 1/32 jump tracks? i have several of the old tracks and cars, plus a few carrera cars, but never tried them on the tracks. thanks.
The modern Carrera cars are 14.8 volt, so I think they will still run on an older 12v system. You might have to file down the guide flag. I think Carrera offers a replacement guide for legacy type tracks. The Carrera Evolution series is the older conventional style slot car system.
I have that Carrera track, I set it up about once a year and race myself!

while the bigger scales offer more detail, there are some cool options in 1/64th scale. this pair is from greenlight, who i personally think makes the most accurately scaled daytona of any 1/64 diecast manufacturer. these two are greenlight's collector club exclusives. in a case of near irony, there were 504 made. i bought a full case, should anyone want to trade something wing-car related that i'm missing.

those m2's are pretty sweet. i semi-regularly hang out on hobbytalk in the diecast section. The lead designer at m2 (sean72) is a regular poster there, and does a great job of communicating with collectors. sean has been know to show off pre-production pieces. the early prototypes of these trucks is one example. He often gathers feedback on what people would like to see produced. these trucks were high on that list, and it looks like they've done a fantastic job on them. no one else has a comparable product anywhere near this price point.
entering "daytona" in the search box on m2's website should bring up the different releases they have made of the car.

I got mine at a local model car swap, but as mentioned, they are out. Also, Hot Wheels has a new vintage race series with about 30 classic race cars. A whole pile of Petty cars. 68 RR, 69 Talladega, 70 RR, Superbird, 71 RR. There's a #11 AJ Foyt Talladega. Both Bud Moore Boss 302s, the #48 Gurney AAR and the #77 Posey T/A Challenger.
Saw them on ebay

1/24 custom painted diecast of a Racing Champions car. This is the only scale that the #7 car has not been mass produced.
The Brickhouse car is another custom job. Roof decal got dinged up in shipping.
those are awesome, doug. it's sad that no manufacturer took advantage of the availability of that casting to make a series of different race versions in 1/24 scale.
while on the subject of 1/24 scales, has anyone seen this dark blue car for sale anywhere? one website mentioned the program was put on hold, so this could be just a pre-production photo and the car may not have been produced. 2011 would be the 4th annual release in this "toolbox treasures" series.

I'm new here, but thought I'd add in some of my 1/18 scale versions of the Winged Warriors. One of the over the counter versions that I didn't see in the previous posts (but I really didn't go back that far) was this Bobby Allison Charger 500:

Yes, 1/18 scale is the only scale I collect. I have approximately 500 models on display in a dedicated room in my house (obviously they are not all Winged Cars, or even Mopars, but most are Nascar).
I originally came to this message board looking for pics for my future customs, and have already found several ideas. Some of them take a little while to create, but I will certainly share them as they arrive.

I love the Dr. don tarr coke superbird , have always loved that paint scheme and thought it would make a great race clone tribute car .
I did the bestline car also
slot car time. while afx (daytonas) and tyco (superbirds) were the most popular HO-scale brands over the years, life-like racing also produced a wing car in HO scale. i don't know of any other color these superbirds were made in. has anyone seen others?

Great looking model there Bill. Love the addition of the real clips. I have probably 75 model Daytona's laying around here, but I have only built 1. That was when I was 8 years old I put together one other than that they just sit here in the boxes.
All the little #7's got together for a family reunion today.
now THAT, is a cool photo.
OK some more HO slots...
These are some of the AFX Daytona variations. You can see the two yellow cars are Flamethrower models (they have headlights) while the orange and one of the blue are not. There are no orange flamethrowers, and I have at least one non-lighted yellow car at home.
Most of the cars came in the clamshell package, but the yellow car lived long enough to get into a blister pack. Full sets frequently had the blue or yellow cars in them.
These are the newest Tyco slots. The yellow car on the right and the Petty bird were released in the late 80's/early 90's. The yellow car was packaged separately while the Petty car came with Petty's '91ish Grand Prix. The orange car was part of a two car set in the mid 90s, and the yellow car on the left came in a set with a '73 Charger, and were released my Mattel after they bought Tyco. That set is the last HO slot car set from Tyco/Mattel.

Other than the first, these are the oldest Tycos. The oldest car is a sky blue car with a flat black hood and 43's on the doors and roof. There's one car on eBay now that apparently came in a set, but lore has it that it was only available through warrranty if you sent your broken car back to headquarters in Brooklyn, NY. They'd send you a new car and it MIGHT be the 'bird. I have one at home that I need to photograph.
The orange metallic car is the oldest 'regular' car. It was part of the TycoPro line which had a solid brass chassis. There's also a very clear color variation available, where this car is the lighter than the other, which is almost FK5 burnt orange. The red/white/blue cars were originally TycoPro/TycoPro2 cars (have no idea what the difference was) and ended its life on the Curve Hugger chassis. The silver car came in blister pack (as opposed to the earlier cars' "bubbles") and was exclusively on the Curve Hugger chassis.
Regarding the cars in the post above, the original yellow and Petty birds came on HP7 chassis while the orange and late yellow cars came on the much faster 440X2 chassis. They're all interchangeable if you use the wider "pan" chassis as opposed to the "indy" narrow chassis.

i saved this first photo off of ebay a long time ago, but never did figure out if the car really came this way. a photo of one on a full card, without the staples, might go a long way towards confirming if this is genuine or not. i recall the seller was asking crazy money for it.
the second photo is a second mattel era release superbird, which may have been a toys r us exclusive. released in 2005, this set came with two chassis, and four bodies, and is shown in the last photo.

modern releases of the old afx car. the first two (red, purple chrome) came in johnny lightning packaging, after which the brand name was changed to autoworld. they come in the old afx-style clamshell, with some releases also available in blisterpack. the "x-traction" name is used on both.
there are subtle changes made to the mold. door handles were added to several versions. the race car window "retainers" were removed, and and the gas cap relocated to the normal location, on the street versions. the out of place looking engine added to some hoods is a more obvious change from the old version. wiper blades were painted on the black car.

Jim, how much are the unrestored Big Willie cars?
$90, according to their website, which seems a pretty fair price, considering the edition size. i was still saving up for the three regular versions, so hopefully i can scrape up enough pennies for this one before they sell out.

the ebay listings for three gold plated versions (out of 12 made) ended last night. i would love to own one, but they are way beyond my budget. i thought that the one which ended at $450 shipped went for crazy money, but it ended up looking like a steal. oddly enough, the guy who won the third listing actually saved himself $40 by losing out on the first one.
congrats on the listings, jim. a second chance offer to the guy who lost out on car #3, at $920, would have to be mighty tempting?

Very few sets of 3 left too.
I got my unrestored car in the mail yesterday. I'm very impressed with the details, the packaging and the quick shipping!
i definitely need to add that unrestored willie car to the 1/18th barnyard. the first one here was purchased this way; the rest are customs i've gathered over the years. there's still a little work left to be undone on the last two...

Doug I will make it a great deal for you, just go ahead and send it my way. I mean surely you will find another one right?
Doug Dempsey has been working with Mike Griesemer of G-Man-Graf-X on an accurate set of 1/25 model car decals for the #7 Superbird. My understanding is that they are now available to order. They have really nailed the right look, including the special Superbird wing decals. I understand that Mike will offer additional variants for this car like the #77 Lem Blankenship USAC version and the #47 1972 Ramo paint job. Doug Dempsey built the demo model shown here.
Mike's email contact info is: mike_griesemer@msn.com <mike_griesemer@msn.com> Mike has some other eye-popping USAC wing car decals available now like the #6 Bettenhausen Daytona, Norm Nelson's #2 Superbird, Dave Whitcomb's #8 Daytona and the Sal Tovella #8 Superbird.

There is a red stripe in the middle of the #47 with is the 1972 paint job shown below. No stripe for #7 or the 1971 version which is #77.
Yes the body used is a JoHan. Doug Dempsey uses a Revell-Monogram nose as it does not have the recessed molded in headlight decals.

The Fred Lorenzen #28 Piper Daytona is being done to correct the issues Yesterdays decals had when they did that set. Also a Cotton Owens Daytona will be in the mix later but right now the Ramo Stott cars and the Most Rare is the John Soares Superbird. and the Kevin Terris if we can find a better pick of it, so if anyone has a better photo please post or send it! thanks! also we need a color pic of the #26 Dragcraft Daytona if anyone has it I have 3 or 4 B&W's need to know the colors tho. also Mikes gonna do some Sponsor sheels like the OLSONITE sponsor for the #5 Nichels bird and couple differnt Quarter sponsors for Cotton Owens Dodges. so stay tuned!......
Are the decals done on an Alps and how difficult are they to work with?
yes all are alps and very easy to work with.

You don't happen to know anyone with any of these still in the package do you? I have a handful of the red ones but none are still in the package, and only have one of each of the other colors. not off hand, i don't. both diecast versions pop up on ebay every once in a while. the white key car also shows up on occasion, but i have not seen a red one for sale, loose or packaged, in quite some time. i gave both diecast versions to paul kaufman three or four years ago, but those were the only extra kidco's i had.

ok, who has a toys r us in their neighborhood, and wants to pick up an item for me? it seems that M2 released a store exclusive 4-pack of cars that includes a rediculous looking daytona that i think i have to have. the item doesn't show on their website yet, but here's a crappy pic of it.
$T2eC16ZHJF0E9nmFStGh6)!~~60_57.jpg
speaking of m2, here are three of their latest releases. the black car is from the mopar 75th anniversary set, while the green car (along with the pink chase version) is from the drivers series.

I actually started passing on M2 cars because they've gotten stupid looking. I bought the black mopar version though.
I want that pink one for my daughter. ;D
I did see 2 M2 Daytonas at Toys R Us recently.
They were both on flatbed trucks .
Both were reddish, and stock looking, but one was pristine, and the other made to look well worn.
They looked good, but I just didn't like the colors...
:Twocents: The M2s are everywhere and the paint jobs arent doing it for me .If they package the daytona again with the hauler or the 2 post lift they display better
http://www.m2machines.com/products1.php?id=120
I bought a 5 pack of the lifts from them. They do make cool displays.
They had 2 on the haulers at our local Toys R Us.
If anyone's interested, I'll look and see if they are still there.
Here's one from Amazon for $15 that has the "dirty" Daytona:

And the one with the clean race Daytona:

Ba-ZING!
I don't see any Europeans in the background. Couple of Texans, a Kiwi and a Bass Boat. But they are all American power.
Here are a couple of customs meant to be local guy dirt track racers. The Daytona's chassis is based on the "Dirt Track Super Stock" MPC series from the early '70s merged with a body from the 1/25th AMT Daytona sold today. The paint scheme is based on a guy who ran Nascar Late Model Chargers in the Northwest in the 1970s.
The Charger 500 is based on a dirt track series from the 1960s. The body was a "glue-bomb" General Lee I picked up used. The lettering is a tribute to what may have been, had Mary, Larry and Deke actually beat the train to the crossing.
So the deal is... the lighter colored #7 is a prototype sample that ERTL submitted for review before production started. The sheet below is the graphic layout. There is a Post It note on the sheet saying, "change color to dark blue". There are a couple of small differences under the car too.

wow, never seen one until now
so that's the short track car without wing? :scratchchin:
It's the unsponsored version, with the "blank canvas" paint job.
it's the first time i've ever seen evidence of the clear one existing. the missing wing/bottle cap might as well be made from unobtainium, i'm thinking.
You sure the clear one isn't some turbine version that Wonder Woman drove?? :smilielol:

I got a few hot wheels and misc others. I think these 3 are the coolest. A Monopoly piece and two Racing Champion ones.

The little RC ones on the left also came in B5 and yellow. The Monopoly piece came in at least three different game packages, with the version in a metal tin coming with gold plated ones. Fancy fancy!
Never heard of the Monopoly ones before but I'll keep an eye out, those are cool.

They were made by Johnny Lightning, I haven't seen them in years though. I also have a LRE Monopoly piece and misc others.
doug, tell me more about this monopoly tin version? this might be something i need to find. a tough one to find is the white daytona token. it came with a variation of the white lightning "chase" car. white lightning production was typically 1% of the series run, and the variation was a very small percentage of the 1%
the racing champions superbird came in five colors, i can't tell if ryan's is the purple or platinum colored one

Someone is going to have to snag a set of American Racing Torq Thrust wheels for their car to match the slot car. Good thing he's not afraid to change up his car.
carrera's 2014 release announcement looks like there's just a single aero car this year?

Carrera USA had a large track set up at Road America for the Cheetah reunion last weekend. I asked about new cars, and the #58 Ranier C500 was the only new issue. The word is that there will be no more Plymouths due to the license expiring. Future Dodge releases are at this point "iffy". I asked why the licensing would be difficult for a dead brand such as Plymouth. The answer was that the licensing goes through Chrysler Europe.
If this is the end, it has been a good run.
It will be sad if they loose the mopars :'(
Thats a fact.

Funny, labeled a 1970, but the picture appears to be a 1968...with '69 side lights!
It does have the line in the grille though, just missing the bumper.
Good find reminds me of the AMT green pup charger

$20 would be about the max for a blue one. i can check with a buddy to see if he still has some available, if you'd like.
there are two different boxes, one for an electric pre-shave lotion and one for the wild country aftershave. the cars are identical other than the contents sticker on the bottom.
the clear bottles are few and far between, so who knows what it would take to buy one. i've yet to see one other than in a photograph.
$T2eC16NHJHoE9n37.jpg
Its amazing how many of these are around.
Does every wing car owner have at least one? I got mine soon after I bought the car...86 or 87. Long before the internet made it even easier.
They used to be common at the swap meets. Not so much now.
m2 is killing me. they keep dropping daytona variations left and right, but with only one store that carries them within 25 miles of me, there is about zero hope of finding anything on the shelf. on top of that, the company's website is still under "reconstruction" a year later, and is way out of date on new releases.
just saw this one on hobbytalk, yet nary a mention of it even existing from m2.

I like that one, the truck is the perfect touch.
I almost got me one of the white and orange Daytona's last week. Had 2 available, along with a Cuda and some other car, I can't remember.
Quote from: Ghoste on September 04, 2014, 12:16:27 PMI like that one, the truck is the perfect touch.
3 different versions in the release, along with the chase version of one. someone scored all four last night, according to his hobbytalk post
the trucks are pretty cool, but i hate shelling out $15+ for one that i don't really want, just to pluck the car from the package.

mattel will surely do a dozen color variations before it's over, but they nailed it with this very first one

Shut up and take my money. This is fabulous news that they have renewed the license. I was quite excited to see the new offerings as well as the #7 "Tennessee Bird Walk" Road Runner. This is the Superbird temporarily running without nose and wing at Talladega in 1970.
Neat.. what's the price on these cars?

Street price should be about $31.99 USD on the standard "Evolution" models and $44.99 on the "Digital" cars. The Evolution cars are traditional analog slot cars like we grew up with. The Digital cars have an extra chip that allows multiple cars on a lane for that kind of track set.
Carrera just started breaking into the USAC wing cars when they stopped a couple years ago. It would be great to see more of these moving forward. The Butch Hartman and Don White Daytonas would be excellent to see. Ditto on the Jack Bowsher #21 Talladega. Contact me for photo references.
Thanks!
They are neat cars
I have most of them before they stopped making new ones for a while
They also have lots of Chargers :2thumbs:
lots of fond memories in this ancient thread.
I am in Canada. I started in wingcars in 1985. One of my earliest is a 1/18 Daytona dated 1992. I have now amassed a collection which I believe is everyone that was built since then including 1/64 and 1/43.
One or two are low production like 1 of 12.
Finally now as nearing retirement I am trying to put them out on display
I have so many I lost count. First 1/18 was a Daytona from 1992. I like to believe I have all or almost all.
Picked up a couple of these on Ebay very recently. They are 1/64 scale and not easy to find in stores.
Cool! Too bad they mangled that poor Dodge truck!

Thanks for the offer!
It all depends, how these new offerings are doing in the shops - they're some of the longest-running moulds already, maybe that little break caused by licensing will even help a bit.
And then we have to check, what succession regarding color makes the most sense.
Anybody has the contact to Mr. Stott, by the way?
