Little old lady in west Topeka owned it from 1980 or so on , she bought it at Laird Nollar used . She was well know to a few people there driving it very little but was stalked by these guys wanting to buy it , as it was such a pristine surviver . She would let them look at it but not touch it and her standard line was the same as Mine NOT FOR SALE . Jeremy a guy from topeka typed me this It looks like the one that was in west topeka. It disappeared about 25 years ago. And another guy typed me Lee Daprato Stuart Sutton --Run title history, check to see if orginal owner lived in Berryton, Ks, my wife, Jan had a teacher, would have been around 69-70, at Berryton grade school that drove this exact car , think last name was Thurston.

good advise , i dont know weather to replace all the belts or not , conflicted cause i wanna drive it it , not conflicted on the hoses as they have already been replaced with the wrong stuff ,
so radiator is getting recored as its coming apart and all the brakes are getting replaces i'll save anything i pull off and save it
I think that it might be wise if you change all the belts and hoses, give it a tune up with plugs (RJ12YC champion) points and wires if the rubber ends look hard. Change oil and filter in the engine and trans also. Air filter if looks so so, On the brakes I think looking at the shoes to see how much they are worn. On a car that old it might be a bet to replace the wheel cylinders , they are cheep and the master cylinder. I

Dang, Folks we all have been had.
Some people just don't get it. I wanted to help you and your son, but it is obvious You don't need our help.
Absolutely not!!!!!!! , We asked for second and left over parts from peoples restorations a bunch of great people offered to donate towards my sons cause he is only 15 and was 14 at the time . People were awesome and felt strongly that a younger generation kid not into tuners was a great cause , We paid for many of the parts and also paid most of the shipping cost for the donated parts . Ians Road runner is a shell of a basket case hauled out of a salvage yard after 30 years so it needed every thing , Again its a Ratty Muscle built so most of the parts we got were ratty and that cool thats all we wanted , We in no way cheated or try to make you feel HAD !!!! infact We havent even gotten the header from you yet you donated ??? So I dont know where this is coming from ? We have met face to face and you know me . If anyone feels cheated by me or my son we will gladly return any parts you gave us or Pay you if we can . Did i luck into a fantastic surviver ,yes could i turn down the car down , NO Abosolutely not if it was in my power to get it , i was going to . Did we sell my sons car or his parts to do so NO its his and he will build it as he can , he is trying to get his Driver license now and get a job so he can make money to work on it , Am I financing his car NO i believe he need to do that I bought him the car 800.00 if you want to know and gave him a ton of parts myself including all the drive train . I didnt have all the money to buy the charger so i borrowed it from a couple friends , Am I rich or make ton of money no just an average guy who has worked and struggled for everything i have like you . there now you know my life story !!!

F = Light Green Metallic (roof color)
F = Light Green Metallic (body color)

I'm glad to see cars like this get a "do-over". These stories are fantastic, the ones where a rumor of an "Old Dodge in a garage" actually turns out to be true. :2thumbs:

If anyone know of a good conditioner for old vinyl? Want to soften up the interior. Trying to keep the seats from splitting once we start driving it.

I use 3M. I've used their mold remover and vinyl conditioner on my 69 super bee with good results.

Bob Wootton, 86, passed away Monday, August 22, 2011, after a long illness at his Topeka home. Bob was born January 7, 1925, in Lamar, Missouri, son of Tom and Essie Wootton. After serving in the Pacific during World War II, he received his college degrees at Pittsburg State and began teaching Senior English at Shawnee Mission North High School in Merriam, Kansas. In 1968, Bob became a lobbyist for the Kansas National Education Association, until leaving to serve in the administration of Governor John Carlin. From 1992 to 1994, he represented the 57th House district of North Topeka in the Kansas Legislature. Surviving Bob is Wanda, his wife of 67 years; daughter Karen Harmon, of Hastings, England; son Mark Wootton and his wife Rochelle Vigurs, of Amherst, Mass.; daughter Kate Wootton and her husband Arthur Short Bull, of Estes Park, Colorado; and son Stephen Wootton and his wife Mary Lou Emery, of Iowa City, Iowa. Also surviving are two granddaughters, Ann Wootton of New Orleans, La., and Claire Emery-Wootton of Iowa City; and three brothers, Jack, Gary, and Richard Wootton. Bob loved reading, teaching, quail hunting, jazz music, and politics, but most of all his family and the friends he met through the years. A service will be held in Bobs memory at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 27, 2011, at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka. Inurnment will be at a later date at Howell Cemetery, Milford, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Helping Hands Humane Society, 2625 NW Rochester Road, Topeka, KS 66617. Obituary for Wanda Wootton
A Woman of Courage Wanda Mae Wootton, 87, of Topeka, Kansas, died Friday June 28, after a short illness, in Iowa City, Iowa, where, Stephen, her youngest son, lives. She was born to Pete and Eva Thomas of Milford and Lamar, Missouri, the oldest of three children. They are Bob Thomas of Iowa and Beverly Lucas of Lamar. She was schooled in Lamar and married the late Bob Wootton in 1944. He almost immediately went overseas to serve in the Pacific. She was a war bride of two weeks when she parted with him. When the war was over, he became a teacher, and, after that, a government adviser, advocate for teachers, and state legislator. Bob and Wanda lived in Topeka, in the same house, for forty years. Bob Wootton died in 2011. He became bed-ridden and partially paralysed after suffering a benign but slowly debilitating brain tumour. After he became bed-ridden, she nursed him valiantly in their home for five years. She seemed to find hidden reserves of strength and determination, and her courage, always in evidence, became absolute and inspiring, a marvel to her family and younger friends. For that alone, she will be remembered by us with pride. She was the best of wives, mothers, grandmothers, unconditionally loving and loyal. Modest about her many skills, she was a wonderful cook, a clever seamstress, who gave to many her quilts—gifts that are just like her, something, like her memory, that will keep people warm for a long time to come. She had an astute and canny political brain and accompanied her husband on his trips around Kansas for many years, serving him well as an informal adviser. Wanda leaves four children: Karen Harmon of Hastings, England; Mark Wootton of Worthington, Massachusetts, Kate Wootton of Colorado; and Stephen Wootton of Iowa City. She had two beloved grand-daughters: Claire, daughter of Stephen and Mary Lou, and Ann, daughter of Mark and Jeanette. In lieu of flowers, may we please request that donations are made to Helping Hands Humane Society in Topeka. There will be a memorial service at Konantz Warden Funeral Home in Lamar, Missouri, on Saturday, July 13, 2pm, private family burial in Howell Cemetery.
Send a gesture of sympathy to Wanda Wootton's family

no hurry want to take it slow and do it right , I have the priming tool now that goes down where the distributor is . Then also want to soak down the cylinders first and let them set a week or so , then hand turn it over .

Taking things slow and soaking everything is a good idea. Your so lucky it's a big block. When you get it running, add dual exhaust and a 4 barrel. It won't hurt the value imo. :Twocents:
Thanks for the trunk pics Stu. My '68 has a SPD of 4-15. I've seen a couple different fasteners for the tail panel trim and the PO of my car made a mess of the hardware, so I'm trying to find out what my car may have came with...

Maybe just a lazy assembler, the rubber anti rattle tube on the trunk torsion bars is not centered.
Nice find :popcrn:. April 1,1968 looks to be a Monday.

Can you see any glue residue? Sometimes it takes a bit of Windex or water to highlight where the glue was. You can tell because the surface has a different sheen to it.
It's definitely one of the early style trunk lids where they didn't punch out the "centers" on the sub structure.

I had heard that Mondays/Fridays were the build days to avoid back in the 80s.. They had owned a dealership at one point. Ford IIRC.

Someone told me that they did away with being able to register classics with the old plates in Kansas. I hope that they are wrong....
I have two complete sets of my hometown county in Kansas from 1963 to 1974, almost all of them are mint, as well as some back into the 1920s. Meguires cleaner/wax works wonders for bringing back the paint on them. Farmers can be good sources of vintage plates, as some of them tend to hoard them in their barns. One local had 200+ unissued ones from 1972-1975 that were still in the original envelops. Seems that he ended up with them after purchasing the farm and he ran across them while cleaning a loft. I only bought a few that I needed before passing the information on to another plate collector who bought them all in one lot....

with year of make plates you dont have to use the correct county , any car plate works as long as its not in uses
Nice. :2thumbs:
Someone told me that they did away with being able to register classics with the old plates in Kansas. I hope that they are wrong....

Thanks, that is good to know. I do not trust what I hear from many of the locals in my hometown about car stuff. They tend to be wrong more than right on these things....
Oh, I did get lucky to find two nice 1941 Kansas plates, a 1944 Kansas motorcycle tag, a 1941 Nebraska (with a 42 add on tag) and a 1942 Colorado plate for the WWII era. Many of those plates just did not survive the scrap drives....

Hi Stu,
Like many enthusiasts on this site I think that it is fantastic that a genuine Mopar guy caught a break on a great car. It could so easily have gone to someone who didn't care. Well done on chasing some of the history too, I really enjoyed that. I wish I could find out more about mine, perhaps one day. One thing though, 5/25/68 is my birthday....just saying. Enjoy that great car.

well as you can see my washer bottle is toast , well i was just going to keep it that way as is and slowly look for a used one that was still solid but in the correct color/patina . Because a brand new white one would stick out like a sore thumb
They sell "aged" washer bottles but even that may look too white. You can always buy a new one and airbrush it (or have your kids kick it around in the dirt for a while).

Ok, really impressive story on this! I'm stunning!
Sure I would be undecided on a light resto and upgrades on it or keep it on the way it is.
On a light resto sure i would paint it ( without dissasembly it ), ad dual exhaust, correct for the year 4 bbl carb ( on stock iron intake ) and maybe a magnum cam... am/fm radio with input jack, front disc brakes for safety... and no more. ( not sure on the axle gears change to 3.23 )
GREAT FIND! Enjoy it! You deserve it!

Yep, take care of you first man.
putting it in storage for the winter , hoping i can keep her . But the bills are already rolling in will see how it all falls out .
Stuart, this has been a real treat to follow the story and pictures. I hate to hear about the health issue and hope it is under control now. I learned from a really stern but smart guy when I was 17 to always take care of your feet. Funny what we remember, but I still remember, and still do. Watch them every day. That and other parts!
What did you do to get the surface rust off of the rear end and springs? I am wondering what to do when I get back to it this winter and don't want to damage anything.
Thanks
Bob

Well Happy Birthday my 68 was built 50 years ago today in St Louis . Best Aprils Fools Joke ive ever had :yesnod:
Mine was born in St. Louis seven days later on the 8th, but the 'production sequence' number is 54,216 prior to yours? How were those numbers assigned? My VIN is 4,292 after yours.
Did you decide to keep the car? I don't care what anyone says - green/green/black is awesome!
Happy Golden Anniversary to your '68! My '68s birthday is coming up on April 15th, although its a Hamtramck car

Would love to keep the car , not sure i can but sure want too , Not sure how all the 68 numbers work
something like ..... :scratchchin:
a specific car's order started with a Shipping Order Number (S.O.#) form either at a dealership (for a customer or inventory) or at Chrysler for a "Sales Bank" (available for dealer purchase) car * the S.O.# is lower right of a '68 fender tag
once the orders got to Chrysler they were given a Scheduled Production Date (SPD) & assigned a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
once they made it to an assembly plant they were scheduled based on parts stock on-hand & order status with customer "SOLD car - EXPEDITE" orders given priority
it appears "moparstuart's" Charger was "In Plant/In Process" on 4/1/68 (on "SCHEDULE")
Has anyone seen any numbers referencing customer/dealer ordered VS. Chrysler sales bank cars? of a model or even yearly?
How many shifts (or hours) did it take Chrysler to build the typical/average passenger car in 1968? :shruggy:
Look like it was less the two months from Assembly plant, to dealership, to sold to customer
Hey Stuart !
Any updates on your '68 ? :scope:
I thought he sold it.
I knew he was willing to sell it, but don't know if he did. :popcrn:
I still have her she runs and drives , I have not done anything else to it , Still pretty much untouched as i found it .
Still have a ton of medical bill so will most likely sell it . BUt i still have hope that my insurance and the hospital will come to an agreement
Good luck Stu. Thoughts and Prayers your way.

I'm Amazed a better system has not been figured out. It's all greed & corruption. :brickwall: :shruggy: :slap:
I've heard enough good and bad about both types of health care programs. Neither are perfect. I just have an ingrained distrust for a system where they have no competition. In our system, if you don't like the treatment, you are free to look for a better option elsewhere. Besides, our income taxes are high enough as it is.

Amen to that. Plus everyone thinks our roads and airports are paid for by the Government. ( NOPE TAXPAYER MONEY) LOL[/b]
To anyone that wishes they have government controlled healthcare, a la Canada and others, I would caution to be careful what you wish for. It's bothersome when people refer to it as "free" healthcare. It is not free, you still pay for it, you just have no choice to go along with your payment. It's been my experience, that in Canada, you don't get the healthcare that you pay for, other people get that, you get what's left over..... And while you are enjoying your leftovers, you are still on your own to pay for the rest of your life, while you are too sick to make an income. Unless of course you have private insurance on those costs as well.
I honestly don't know how much folks in the US pay for decent medical insurance, but I would hazard a guess, that their taxes, plus their insurance costs still add up to less than what my taxes are for the same income in Canada. Our healthcare system still gets cash increases every year, to the tune of billions of dollars, while wait times still increase. I'm sure there's a better way, but our government hasn't figured it out yet. :shruggy:
Over here you will get the same cover...working or not. Although its paid for from our taxes there are many counties that pay about the same or even more tax than us with no National Heath Service Equivalent. The NHS is 70 years old this year....I bet you could not find a single Brit who would want us to lose it. Due to an aging population it's under funded and rather stretched financially.....but Brits are still very proud of it. If you were on holiday here and has an accident the NHS would look after you...no questions...no charge. It's a great...but not perfect...system.

Unless your have a very different system over there the government effectively has NO money without our taxes...so effectively the government pays for NOTHING...and our taxes pay for everything. And when we cant afford it in the bad times we knock on the door of the IMF (no ....not the Impossible Mission Force...but the International Monetary Fund!)...and try and pay it back in the good times...Although that bit never seems to work......and that's called National Debt!....lol!
The very poor get treatment here too. FREE for them. My brother had no insurance but was treated nonetheless. Dental and medical.
Well havent touched it in a while but i scored a set of vintage Redlines today , old but cool for display perfect for this one that wont see the road much as a survivor

Hope to keep it as long as I can . These were so cheap and it needs to have tires that hold air on it weather I sell it or not .

Its nice to see you have been able to keep it. I have a little tuning to do but will see you out and about this summer. Take care of your health see you later. If your keeping it and are interested in a factory 383 4 brl intake it prob could be had for some Bush light.

Glad to see you still have the car Stu. I'd hate to see you have to go down the road of having to sell it as finding it was like a lottery win. The odds of coming across another one in that good shape are slim and none. I hope everything works out that you get to keep it for many years to come.

I was just super happy that after 30 plus another 2 years sitting that it started right up and drove up on the trailer . :icon_smile_big:

well thats your opinion , i have a life and i have several cars . This car is not being abused by sitting outside rusting away like your im going to restore it someday comment and it needs very little to be road worthy . The one setting next to it has been sitting since 77 and is no worse for ware . It will have its day .
It is more "perfect "than most 51 year old Dodge Chargers that I have seen over the years!
Perfect for you. :2thumbs:
If it starts and runs and it needs "very little" to be roadworthy, just find some tires, hoses, and belts, and get the thing road worthy!!!! It would be so cool for you to drive it and so cool for others to see it on the road....instead of just on a trailer. It will maximize your enjoyment even if you don't drive it much
I am assuming that as long as nothing is touched or changed, it is still as found minus some dust. So he enjoys showing it as a "as it was on the day it was uncovered barn find". What is so wrong with that? He has his cruising cars, his show cars that he drives. So he enjoys this one as it is. I assume there are still a bunch of people out there that like seeing it in this attire. So the only way others can see this beauty as it was found is to trailer it. Do you Stu. Nothing else matters!!!!

I thought this was a message board in which we support each other, not criticize. It's his car and he can do what he wants with it.
Lets support the owner for his due diligence in saving the car.
For all we know , if the current buyer never bought the car , the owner would have sold it to someone who would turn around and flip it or worse part it out.

checked the ones we could get to all were solid none were seeping or rust bubbling like this one . it wont get to many miles put on it and we will keep an eye on it . Motto has been with this one its only original once so trying to not disturb anything i dont have to. Hopefully i dont regret only addressing as needed .
So to all the Nay sayer who said i would never do anything to it . It should be road worth enough now to make it to more shows and cruises . Ill trade it out at home with the Birdible for a while and exercise her .
replace all the freeze plugs my 68 was the same way something in those block seem to make a lot of rust in the coolant may look good out side but the back side is probably real thin on the inside sitting makes it worse

Looks great Stu!
The car looks awesome. That paint is so nice, I wouldn't repaint on it. You were the right buyer for this car.
How does the car run? You have good acceleration and performance?
Yes runs great. May need a carb rebuild in the future and accellorator pump. But not yet.
Thanks again to Brian M Bodensteiner. For the donation of a washer bottle in much better shape then mine and holds it old patina. Waited till we got running and drive well to switch it out and not to put a hand through it working on the engine
Bin of all the original parts we have taken off to make the car safe. Tried to touch as very little as possible to keep the car original but we must make it driveable and safe.
Glad to see that you have the car out and about! :2thumbs:
If you have to replace the freeze plugs, it won't effect the value at all !!.
Washed the whole car and cleaned and washed the Engine bay this weekend . Also complete deep cleaned the vinyl top with Aerospace 303 cleaner and then sealed it with Aerospace 303 UV protectant , it was really dry all over but especially out in the middle . It really suck it up and looks like brand new now .
Washed for the first time in 33 years.

well that's your opinion and your taste. I like many different styles of wheels my spyders are rare and I love them on chargers. Bought them just for this car. I have 4 complete sets of keystone classics and 4 sets of cragar SS's that are ready for some of my other cars. I won't ever get rid of my stock wheels just fun changing looks every once in a while. The bias ply red lines look fantastic but are just not fun to drive on. Here is one of my favorite charger 500's with spyders on it. Wish it was mine. But you get the idea of the look I want.

correct they were not expensive and you never find cheap 14 inch tires . I chose 70's to fill the wheel well better . These have a great classic muscle car look on the outside but have a great modern tire tread design .

I see people on other classic car sites like them, but I can't find much info on them other than that. The tread does look modern. What's the treadwear number?

Craigars SS.
i have three sets of cragars and 2 sets of ET Diamonds that look similar really love those also especially with spinner three bar centers but not the top of my list like spyders and Keystons
The charger hasnt been cooling properly on longer rides and rather them blow up the 74k original 383 the radiator came out to be checked out .
Sent it out to have it boiled out and repair any leaks in the original numbers matching radiator .
Its really hard making decision on what directions to go , just trying to touch everything as little as possible . I for sure decided it was getting a water pump and a thermostat , cooling and safety issues are just on the must do list . So the radiator shop calls and the radiator was super clogged up and rotten as soon as he tried to boil it out the core would have just fallen apart. He can recore it and save my original numbers tanks .I told him to do it , he ordered a core that has a better tube configuration then original and will cool much better . For 500.00 bucks i thought that was a steal so now the car should cool great .
So the next Delema , Everything looks like its never been touched . So im having nightmares that the original timing chain is is still in there and its a ticking time bomb with the Nylon coated gears . I really hate opening more things up and touching more stuff but its a no brainer while all this is already out to just go ahead and put a double steel roller timing chain and gears set in it . I will sleep better and the car be better for it . No sense in ruining the motor .
:popcrn: :popcrn: :popcrn: :popcrn: :popcrn: with the new tires on it was extremely evident it need this

picked this up , looks better then the bright green interstate
Getting more grease and grim off it while its torn down , little scrubbing here and there . Alot more blue is coming out little by little .

Sent it out to have it boiled out and repair any leaks in the original numbers matching radiator .
When did they start stamping the VIN on radiators.....?
Correct part numbers and date codes sir :rotz: not to mention its the exact radiator this car was born with
Just messing with you, friend. :2thumbs:
That is great that the car still had it. The best I ever did was having the original engine.
Smart move with new timing chain :2thumbs:
you need to get a Gano inline screen for the upper Rad hose, if not it will plug up your new radiator.
Well balancer & timing cover are off now. As I suspected. Origin nylon covered cam gear still in there 53 years later. Amazing it's still in tact. Chains a little loose so glad I made the decision to crack her open. Cover and front seal were both leaking pretty good. Chance to get it sealed up right. She ran really well for 53 year old time capsule with a ticking time bomb timing chain .

74k , 53 years amazing I cant believe that nylon is still there and in such good shape . Little old lady driven most of its life .
You might think about replacing the cam while you have the timing chain off, and maybe go for a holley 4 barrel. :Twocents: :shruggy:

Getting ready to send my wiper motor to topher to fix the park in it . It works just the wiper stop where ever you turn the switch off . He says its a easy fix and will keep my original patina ,
He also has a buddy who is going to do the same for my alternator it still charges but is weak and has left me stranded a couple time when i have my headlamps on it cant keep up .
