Time for a new thread on my project.
Here, I'll post pictures of my car and parts as I begin the assembly.
Follow along as I try to figure out where the hell I stashed all this crap over eighteen years ago when
I disassembled this wreck.
Be amused as I try to figure out which piece of petrified masking tape with some sort of unintelligible
hieroglyphs scrawled on it belongs with which rusty, crusty unidentifiable part...
Thrill with delight when I discover that the brand new parts I just bought had already been
purchased by me a decade ago and had somehow been sucked into a vortex, magically reappearing
in the spare bedroom closet after the latest, more expensive versions arrive.
Learn new curse words.
Watch me break shit.
Watch me have to redo stuff several times because of my numerous brain farts.
Expect long pauses between updates, because I'm pissed and I've thrown the wrenches through the
drywall, stomped on the part, turned off the garage lights, slammed the door and haven't gone back
out there for weeks.
Expect longer pauses because I'm broke at the time, or a machine shop or parts vendor thinks that
months and years is an acceptable amount of time to do their thing.
Ultimately, hopefully not too many years from now...
If I live long enough...
I'll get this bitch together...
Turn the key...
and:
:drive:
:popcrn: done yet
To begin, I've set out, and attempted to organize the parts I need to begin the assembly.
I'm going to start with the backend of the car, beginning with the installation of the trunk lid and
hinges, so that I can then move on to the stripe and the wing.
Already, I can see that I need to order more parts :scratchchin:.

Your first post sounds like what I am going threw with my Daytona project, After 10 years of collecting parts then having to move them because the kids have to move back in and one of them is an excessive compulsive cleaner so parts got moved again to places I would never put them, Then the good part, They move out,,,
Only to move back in this time with Grandkids only to go through it all over again, 10 years later as I am buying new parts for the ones that came up missing my son shows up and knows right where they are, after I already bought new ones. These things get expensive with kids around. That why I am moving into a two bedroom house with a 6 car garage as soon as this loan goes through. No room for anyone but Grandkids.

It sure as hell ain't the parts I ordered weeks ago. ::)
Try not to go insane when installing the stripe. If you screw it up I doubt you'll do what happened to mine.
I got both side parts on, perfectly centered on the body line, slowly peeled off the backing paper, the 10 year old stripe that had sat in the garage wayyyy too long before mounting seemed to work just fine. Then mounted the trunk lid piece, and the backing paper came off in little pieces on the first half leaving lots of specks and looked like dust bumps under the stripe, when i got to the drivers side of the trunk lid, as i peel off the backing paper, a section of paint (between stripe and trunk edge) peeled off the trunk lid and stuck to the backing paper. about 4 inches by 2 inches that i'll have to respray again. I'll try wetsanding it first but don't expect it to work.
Use a stripe that isn't too old, keep the paper wet, and don't leave too much excess outside the stripe, I'll trim the transfer paper alot closer the next time i do it.

I haven't touched it since early December.
Some of my family members have decided that my time is better spent at the following places:
Emergency room.
Hospital.
Funeral Home.
Graveyard.
Bank.
Lawyer's office.
And, last but not least...
Cleaning up the filthy, disgusting hoarder house from Hell.
Hence, the " :eek2:"

The sister was the last one of my family.
Everyone else is already gone.
Well...
Except for that thing called "Brother" that I absolutely refuse to have anything to do with. ::)

I painted a few parts today.
Today's progress:
Tail light wiring harness installed.
Body plugs in trunk floor installed.
Trunk mat laid in place to allow it to contour itself to the trunk floor for a day or so before marking and cutting mounting holes for wing braces and scissor jack stud.
I spy vacuum trunk release..did the same on my 66
Looking great !!
What does the switch look like for the vaccum trunk release and where does it mount ?

In my case, it's a small black button with a square chrome bezel that says "trunk".
The C body it came off of had it mounted in the glove box, but I may put it elsewhere. ;)

I think I moved my floor bracket to make the jack fit. (It's been a few years) :scratchchin:
This might explain why I had to modify the trunk mat to fit around the bracket. :brickwall:
If I remember correctly, some of the original cars had their brackets bent toward the center of the car
To make the jack fit. :shruggy:
yer probably right...I just built mine from scratch....mine rests against the side of the braces....
I just went back through a bunch of my old pictures.
Yep.
I moved the bracket.
They moved the rear bracket on (most of) the original Daytonas to clear the wing brace, just like you did. I also did that on mine.

I fitted my NOS locking gas cap to my new reproduction filler tube I got from Van's Auto.
It fit just fine, but at first I couldn't get it to turn, soo...
I disassembled the gas cap, cleaned out the petrified 45 year old grease, lubed everything up,
reassembled everything and...
It still wouldn't turn once it was in the filler tube. :brickwall:
So...Sticking my finger inside the rim of the filler tube, I discovered a sharp burr...
A few swipes with a small piece of sandpaper and...
All is well. :coolgleamA:

Every part finished and off the list is a move forward. The planning for what's next can go on forever.

After the car being covered up for so long, while I did other things...

So...
On June 6th 2014 I strolled on in to my local Chrysler dealer and placed my order for a brand spankin' new 472 Hemi crate engine for my Daytona clone. :coolgleamA:
After leaving a sizable deposit with my friend the parts guy, I left for home confident that my new engine would soon arrive... :coolgleamA:
I got a call a few days later, informing me that the engine would be delayed a few weeks, and would that be OK ?
My reply was "Sure, no problem" ! :2thumbs:
"I've already waited 35 years to get one, so at this point a few weeks won't matter"... ;)
Over the next several months,
The Chrysler dealer parts guy and I repeated the above conversations several times. :scratchchin:
Sure that it was just a minor issue Chrysler (FCA) was having, I soldiered on...
Then...
Yesterday, (September 25th 2015) I get a call from my friend at the dealership.
Recognizing the number that appeared on my cell phone...
I anxiously answered the call.
Chris ?
Yeah ?
Bad news, Man...
Your crate Hemi order has been canceled by Chrysler. (FCA)
They said they're having "Supplier problems"
I've been told DO NOT attempt to order it again.
The order will be rejected.
They are not sure if or when they will EVER build any more crate Hemis.
Do you want me to mail your refund check, or do you want to swing by and pick it up ?
Hmmm...
I'll be RIGHT there.

I have been working on fixer upper houses for the past 38 years. I decided that since it doesn't seem like I will ever be finished that I would take some time to do my car project. Unfortunately the list of things needing done on the house are piling up now since this project has taken way longer than I first thought. Hopefully the house won't collapse before I am done with the car but I am not stopping now. I hope you can find some daylight to get back on your project. It deserves attention and from the sounds of it you need some "me time" to shake off that bad Ju Ju from the work world. :2thumbs:

Today I completed Phase 2 of my "K-member/engine/transmission/front suspension assembly cart".
I made it so that the rectangular tubes could be unbolted from each other, and used as outriggers for the cart my engine is sitting on.
This will allow me to roll the whole thing over the top of my lift so I can raise it up to a comfortable working height.

I have to get things up off the floor to work on them, especially since I'm 6' 4" and the floor seems to get further away every year. :eek2:
Hmmm...
The last time I posted in this thread was on June 20, 2016. :scratchchin:
Shortly after that date, the Bride of many decades decided she needed to test out our health insurance. :eek2:
With the exception of buying/collecting more parts,
All progress on the car came to an abrupt stop.
After getting her health concerns all squared away (We hope)
We found and bought the RV we'd been looking for off and on for a couple of years:
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,119741.0.html
While Doing some changes and maintenance to the RV, and planning our (now canceled for this year ) epic western road trip to Montana...
I developed my own health issues.
Now, after a month and a half off work, with the first four weeks or so basically laying flat on my back...
I'm able to get up and around and do a few things.
So, I've decided to work on a part of the car that isn't covered in expensive PPG B5 blue (I don't need the stress of working with newly painted parts right now :eek2:).
It's a project that I'm not even sure is going to work, but if it doesn't, it can all go back to stock, and the extra junk I've collected for it can go in the dumpster.
I thought some of you might be curious why there hasn't been any updates on my project recently.
Life gets in the way of the hobby sometimes. :rotz:
But, I'm still in it. ;)
I'll show you all what I'm working on in an upcoming post.
After installing the factory power sunroof in my car, I decided I needed a little extra head room.
I've owned several Imperials over the years, and have come to appreciate the benefits of an adjustable driver's position.
Early on in my project, I adapted a six way power seat setup out of an Imperial, this allows for a lot of seat adjustment, just like a modern car.
Head room issued fixed. :2thumbs:
This leaves the steering column. :scratchchin:
I want to install a tilt/telescopic column from an Imperial.
I know there are columns available from the aftermarket, but they're expensive, are usually billet aluminum or stainless :puke: and none of them I've found have the telescopic feature.
I've been collecting this shit for years, so out to the archives I go to gather up some junk for this project...
Here I have couple of pre 1970 ( no ignition switch ) tilt/telescopic Imperial columns, the original column out of my Charger... and a $5.00 wood grain steering wheel to experiment with:
After cleaning up the splines, and polishing my shaft...
The Charger wood grain steering wheel went right on the Imperial column. ;D
(Ignore the column mounted shift lever-it's leaving.)
This was my biggest concern, if the wheel didn't fit the splines, this project was going to get way more involved.
It telescopes. :2thumbs:
It tilts. :coolgleamA:
Stay tuned. ;)
Awesome, I like the steering column idea & have always wanted one myself.
Thats awesome, I have been wondering about a factory column like that, glad you & the Mrs. are doing better.
Glad to hear you both are feeling better
    glad your at least puttering with it :icon_smile_big: hope all the health issues are behind you
Thank you all for the kind words.
I worked on the steering column a little more today.
I took the mounting bracket off of the Imperial column, and test fitted the Charger mounting bracket. :scope:
The bracket from the Charger bolted right on. :coolgleamA:
The Imperial column had these cool metal sliders on it's mounting bracket.
So I swapped them over to the Charger bracket in place of the flimsy plastic ones that came on the Charger.
I've ordered one of these.
I'm going to attempt to conceal the transmitter inside the Charger steering wheel center, and the receiver somewhere inside the nosecone.
If it works I can get rid of all the complicated bullshit in the steering column that was previously used to blow the horn.
I like the tilt-telescope column idea.....have often thought about one myself.....the only issue that I can see (unless you have already figured it out), is that the steering wheel looks to be a lot closer to your body than a non C-body column....
You could always move the seat back to compensate, but then you would be farther away from the gas and brake pedals as well.....
or am I just overthinking this entire scenario??

Yep. I've thought of that.
With the six way power seat track I've added I'm able to move the seat pretty far back and down to give me more headroom.
I'm a big goon with ape arms, so it shouldn't be a problem. ;)
glad yer back at your project....mine came to an abrupt stop in February, our septic drain field failed, had to have an entire new septic system installed here.....to the tune of around $35k

I went to the "St. Louis Mopar Blast" a few weeks ago and bought two more C body tilt/telescopic steering columns to dissect for this project.
The two steering columns I already had were missing some of the small parts, theses two are complete, so...
Problem solved. :coolgleamA:
While I was at "The Blast" I got my AMD back bumper and bumper guards from Ted Stephens.
I also got a new set of rear bumper brackets and the bumper guard/exhaust hanger brackets.
It's getting cold outside, I'm going to finish up a few more outdoor projects and start back working on the Daytona.
Maybe this time I'll make some progress. :scratchchin:

You got that right. :nana:
I'm making a second attempt on the steering column project.
I've started over from the beginning, this time with a 1967 tilt/telescopic column from a Chrysler.
The 1967 column I bought a few weeks ago is 100% complete, the one I was working with was missing a few things..
Also, the '67 column uses a regular steering coupler like the Charger had, the other column had that big, rubber biscuit style coupler. :eek2:
Today, I started to disassemble the '67 column, and I cut off the C-body floor brackets and the lower shifter arm.
:popcrn:

They changed to plastic to be cheap.
The metal sliders still slide, allowing the column to collapse on impact. :Twocents:
Today, I bolted the modified '67 Chrysler tilt/telescopic steering column into one of my junker parts cars.
I figured it was safer to do the test fitting in junk that doesn't have expensive B5 blue all over it. :eek2:
Everything bolted up just fine. :coolgleamA:
It actually fits. :2thumbs:
( Ignore the column shift lever...it's leaving.)
As I suspected, the deep dish of the woodgrain wheel places it too far back... :scratchchin:
COOL!
So, I'm toying with the idea of going with a modified "Tuff wheel", since it's much flatter. :scratchchin:
Will a "Tuff wheel" look out of place in a '69 ? :shruggy:

I've got to agree with you, Stuart.
The tuff wheel thing just isn't going to look right in a Daytona.
I'm going to give up on the tilt/telescopic idea for now.
I think I'll look into one of these tilt columns from Flaming River that will allow me to use the wood grain steering wheel:

The factory '69 wood grain steering wheel is just too deep.
It needs a flatter steering wheel to work.
I might consider a wood grain Tuff wheel. :scratchchin:
It's nice and flat and doesn't have that thick black grip on it.
Ok, so this is what I came up with.
It's a Grant wood "Tuff wheel".
It fits, clears everything, and while it's not the look I really wanted, I think it's a good compromise since the original '69 wood grain wheel just wasn't going to work.
I like it. :2thumbs:

Thanks
The black foam grips of the Tuff wheel looked out of place with the woodgrain dash. :scratchchin:
I think the new wood Tuff wheel will go better with the woodgrain dash that I'll have in the Daytona. :coolgleamA:
yes much better then the black foam
It still no trippa my trigger. Sorry
Center is too big for my taste. I'd almost whittle out my own.

Yeah, it's not ideal in the looks department, but I'm a big goon so I've got to do something to make this car fit me better. :eek2:

It does look a little better with the horn button on it...
I hope. ;)
I like it :2thumbs:
I needed a horn contact spring retainer/insulator thingie for a Chrysler Tilt-O-Scope steering column in a '69 Dodge Charger Daytona with a Grant reproduction wood "Tuff Wheel" :scratchchin:
Come to find out, such a thing didn't exist... :brickwall:
...Time to fabricate ;)
I got the horn switch and button mounted on the steering wheel, and fabricated a locking lever for the telescopic portion of the steering column.
I was going to mock it all up in the parts car, but it's something like 10 degrees out there in that garage today, so I put it all together on another steering column I have in the heated garage.
Everything fits and works/tilts/telescopes as it should. :coolgleamA:
It's finally warmed up some around here, so last weekend I was able to mock up the tilt/telescopic/woodgrain Tuff wheel in the junker parts car.
I'm still not 100% sold on the looks, but everything fits and tilts/telescopes as it should, the wiring is even going to work. The Chrysler column electrical connector has a couple of extra wires I'll have to deal with, but it will plug into the Charger wiring harness.
I think I'll try to find a nice chrome Fratzog to dress up that big ugly black horn button. :scratchchin:
It'll be an improvement if you do it. I'd look for one off of a Coronet c pillar.

Yep, needs something to break up all that black plastic. I need to see what reproduction Fratzogs are available. :scratchchin:
:popcrn:
Blacked out spokes would look good.

Good idea Brian ! :2thumbs:
I'm sure I've got some old cracked lenses around here somewhere that I can salvage a Fratzog off of. :scratchchin:
I painted some brackets today.
Bumper, bumper brackets, bumper guards and license plate light have been assembled.
:coolgleamA: :popcrn:
I always paint the backside of my bumpers to prevent future rust.
I put the new back up lights in today.
I hated the wire just running through a hole in the valance,
So I installed these rubber grommets from the local Rural King.

:2thumbs: I done the same with rubber the grommets :coolgleamA:
I needed to temporarily install my bumper so that I could determine the exact placement of my bumper guards. :scratchchin:
Realizing that attempting to do this by myself would result in scratched paint, flying wrenches and more than a few new curse words being brought into existence, I decided to rig something up. :hack:
My El Cheapo Harbor Freight transmission jack, several yards of blue tape, some scrap lumber and a few nuts and bolts did the trick. :coolgleamA:
Lookin good! one question on that bumper, repro or original?

Mike, The bumper is from AMD.
I was thinking that, I used the AMD bumper on my Daytona and was pleased with it, it will pass for an OEM bumper, it's not show chrome, but more in line with OEM production chrome, how did you find the bumperette fit? I know Panhead/ Curt had a minor issue with the fit, I didn't have any issues with mine though
My bumper is going on 14 years old and no issues with the chrome and no rust, and I do drive my car rain or shine...
Thanks
Mike
GREAT work going on!
Always gotta be thinking when working alone.. I used a chair. :icon_smile_big:
very nice work :popcrn:

Mike,
The bumper guards fit the bumper just fine.
I'm having some issues with the lower mounting brackets on the bumper guards hitting my shiny, B5 blue valance.
Could be the guard's bracket ?
Bumper too high on the body ?
Could be the taiwanese valance I got from Harden's muscle car world back in the '90's ?
Could be I'm an idiot :scratchchin: :brickwall: :shruggy: ?
If I can force myself to go out to the garage today, I'll try to figure it out. :scope:

Thanks
I tried balancing the bumper on my knees while sitting on a chair and slowly rolling forward, Then I realized I would have to hold that pose while reaching in the trunk and getting the washers on the bolts and getting my nuts started. :eek2:
Way too much going on at once, and paint repairs/touch ups are 1800 miles away in Arizona :eek2: :brickwall: :slap:
So, the bumper guards won't fit. :brickwall:
The back up lights had to be reshaped to fit the valance, too. :eyes:
This tells me that the valance I got from Harden's back in the 90's is probably shaped wrong. :brickwall:
The only way I can see to make the bumper guards fit without destroying the paint on the rear valance, is to cut the lower brackets off, reshape/ reposition them and reweld them, which means they will need to be rechromed. :flame:
So, for now anyway...
I've chosen the bumper guard delete option:
A few trinkets have been added. ;)
Very Nice beautifull works
