Title: XP29G8B269602 - 1968 Dodge Charger - General Lee Conversion
Post by: JoeyGowdy on December 24, 2007, 12:05:43 AM
Rowdy purchased XP29G8B269602 (http://www.stockmopar.com/mopar-vin-decoder.php?VIN=XP29G8B269602) in August 2007 and fully restored it to a General Lee Replica by May 2008 just in time for Dukesfest in June 2008 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway!!

Heh, yeah looked great... however it's now Primer Red and will be Hemi Orange soon.

Quote from: dads_69 on December 24, 2007, 02:01:32 AMI like the gold as well. I almost bought a '68 R/T in that same condition and color years ago, sold before I got there.

I love the Metallic Gold as well... who knows, might be the same car.

Quote from: dads_69 on December 24, 2007, 02:01:32 AMHowever, a duke '68 just isn't right. But, to each or her own.

100% true. :'(

However (unlike us die-hard charger fans and DoH fans) most common folk won't know the difference between the 1968, 1969 and 1970 models, they mainly see the Orange Paint, General Lee stickers and Dixie Flag and automatically assume it's the proper year model and all. ::)  It's fine for what I plan on using it for... might restore it to the factory image later... it has ALL matching numbers, stock factory AC & heater, paper work, clear title, etc. (which we all know is rare) :2thumbs:

Yes still a work in progress - probably 75% complete.

Quote from: 69bronzeT5 on December 24, 2007, 02:26:02 AMWhat are you using it for?

The usual: daily driver, dukesfest (http://www.dukesfest.com), classic car rallies, local parades, fundraisers, magazine articles, Pinks-All-Out, events like that and might film it in an movie or two (http://www.joeygowdy.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=61).

Quote from: dads_69 on December 24, 2007, 03:02:30 AMNot the same car you own now. The charger I was going to buy had power windows and a real R/T not a wanna be. It was in Washington State also. Matching number car you have also, what a shame to clone it. Enjoy.........

True... figured I'd get a lot of :flame: :RantExplode: :flame: for converting it to a General Lee... however I'll probably restore it to factory original after I've finished my current plans for it... worth more original anyways  :2thumbs:

The Center Console was in pieces (pic #1) so we carefully pieced it back together with fiberglass, then spread fiberglass all along the inside to help strengthen it (pic #2). Later painted it Medium Beige and added the Tan carpet pieces for the final results (pics #3 & 4).

Thank you, although I am turning it into a General Lee I still wanted to use most of the original equipment (if it was possible to repair it) just incase I (or someone else) ever decided to revert it back to its original factory image.  :yesnod:

I don't know how correct you're trying to be, I'm guessing not too correct since you're using a '68, but I believe the correct color for the GL is not Hemi orange, but 1975 Corvette Flame Red.

Either way, great looking car.  I'm not the biggest GL fan either, but I'm always happy to see a Charger getting restored, GL or not.

True, I went with the Hemi Orange V2 because it was an in-between/medium orange color.  Most have the Corvette Red, some have the Hemi Orange and others have Vitamin C Orange. In the picture below the Corvette Red is the darkest, Hemi Orange is the medium and the Vitamin C Orange is the lightest.   :yesnod:

Heh - there is no "correct" way to build a General Lee... only a guideline due to there being so many different versions used throughout the series.  In truth, to build one "correctly" you would need to include all characteristics from all versions of the car throughout all seasons... hmm... that would be an interesting looking General lee LOL

True.  In the story the doors are welded shut, however in reality they were not.

Yes. However after watching Seasons 1 - 7 on DVD you can tell they edited out those goofs... amongst other things.  :shruggy:

The car is coming along great man.

There's one thing I've always wondered. When you have your General Lee at one of the Dukesfest shows, and there all parked together, does anyone ever "Loose" their car or get confused whos' is who's?

At least until they get up to the door maybe?

To set mine apart from the rest, I've added several custom features:
1. Front Wind-shield: a custom text logo on the top that reads "www.JoeyGowdy.com"
2. Rear Back-glass: a custom rebel flag that appears to be "blowing in the wind"
3. Hood/Door: a custom text logo sticker that reads "RowdyGowdy's General Lee"

It's funny, you actually can sorta "lose" your GL at a big Dukes event.

There's a lot of differences between the different GLs though.  Most guys could only really confuse their own GL with a few of the other ones present at a Dukes event.

You can always tell the surviving WB prop-car GLs from the replicas at one glance though --  The real ones look like sh*t!

A common problem with the stock exhaust headers are the butterfly valves, they will rust closed if the vehicle has been setting up over the years.  If it doesn't run right and tries to die constantly (and everything else checks out fine) then it's the butterfly valves... it's dying from it's own fumes. Used the torch to cut out the rusted butterfly valves... it can breathe again... problem solved!   :2thumbs:

What's wrong with air-shocks?  :shruggy:  It's not like I did away with the leaf springs.   To give it more support I reworked the old leaf springs (adding one leaf to them) and replaced the old stock shocks with the new Max-Air-Shocks to help give it a meaner more aggressive old school look in the back.   :2thumbs:  I'll post a few photos of the reworked leaf springs with the max-air-shocks very soon to show the more aggressive old school jacked-up look I was referring to.

I am not a fan of DOH, or the cars, or what the show did to hundreds of cars.  I want to smack someone every time they see my green, white vinyl topped 68 and and grin and point "General Lee"!  Ugh.

All that said, looks like you saved a nice car and made a nice car to drive and enjoy.  That's what's important.  We need more chargers on the road, whatever color or style.

I agree with some of the other writers about that gold color.  What a cool color with those seats.  You don't see too many of those.  And of course, you can always go back!!!!

On Oct 18th 2008 Mississippi on Wheels (http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,49751.0.html) held a car show in New Albany, MS and my GenLee (http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,37826.120.html) won 3rd place in the Special Interest class.

Later that evening some friends txt msgd me wanting to take some photos with it... the Daisy Duke potentials:

Yeah - I wish :) actually, the before photos were taken with a 35mm camera, the during/after photos were taken with a cheap low-rez digital camera... and the last photo with the Daisy Dukes was taken with a cell phone.

Hover your mouse over the red X, right click the mouse to bring up the menu, then click "Show Picture" or "View Image".

A lot of times if there are lots of pictures on a webpage it might not load them all resulting in the red X - if the image is there you can use that mouse command to manually make the image load.

I don't get people who hack up the rear of a '68 when they build a General  :shruggy:
Why don't they just stay with the original 2 left and right rear lights?

No clue, to each their own I suppose.  It wasn't butchered too badly - it can easily be re-installed -or- sold to someone who needs it.

I'll asnwer this one, Obn the show they did that to the panel, so if the builder wants to make it look more correct, that would be one of the ways to go. But the hard part is getting everying behind the panel to line up right and install mounting hardware for the lights toe set on.

They now make, new tail panels which they didn't do before. So for some, they could either chop the painel to make the other one, or they would have to went out and look for a donor car for the panel of a 69. Now with the new panels, you can just drill out the spot welds of the old panel, and change the tail panels which would be easyer and would save the old other year panel (if it wasn't rusted out and beyond repair) and have it in case you wanted to switch back some day.

But Like Joey said, to each his own though.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find the chrome pieces that actually goes there (haven't seen any on eBay) so I picked that up at AutoZone until I'm get the correct pieces... a little help would be appreciated, anyone know the part numbers for them?

A previous owner of my '68 used some sort of chrome plastic stick-on trim to simulate the LR wheel opening molding. I didn't do much to the car for the first year but that trim kept catching my eye. I knew something was a bit off. That sort of thing is ok in a 50/50 situation (50 feet/50 mph) but not sitting still with a camera nearby.

The Charger looked lonely this evening so I decided to do a little work on it, redrilled the holes for the sail panel trim and installed them:

I like the idea of the plastic trim retainers, may not last forever, but you don't have to climb inside the trunk to put the speed nuts on.

7th girl in from the left.  I need her number please.  If she balks then I'll take 3rd girl from the right depending on the length of her hair(that could be a deal breaker).  After her the rebel flag girl but she will have to change her hair color back to brunette.  Hmmm, let's see next would be the 4th girl in from the right but once again, brunette hair color change must be immediate so after her it's 4th girl from the left  Then the very first girl on the right looks like she's got potential.
Heck they are all beautiful.

Get me some numbers  :callme:

Looks like you had some fun.

Okay, I been holding back on this but I can't anymore. Why did 31 people say he "terrible... slaughtered" his car for? it no worst then when someone takes a charger and hacks it up to make a pro street car out of it where the car loose it's whole rear frame area.. Now that is terrible. I don't see where he slaughtered his car at, at all.

Now about the big mack, I have a friend of mine that ate 12 paties at one time as well in front of afew friends to show us he could. So Gowdy, I will have to say if might have to up to more beef paties well maybe 3 more  :smilielol:. I always though 10 was alot but when my friend did 12 I was  :o. After he was done eating I did ask him where in the heck did he put them all at. Still today all my friends still hasn't top him yet and I even tryed once and failed  .

I think the whole deal with rowdy is when he started posting youtube links of his crazy ex girlfriend and how strange he was with the reaction. Some people havent dealt with that... Why didnt you just buy a 69 since youve tried to turn your 68 into one?

I don't want to hi-jack this thread but I will asnwer your question how ever though. I couldn't find a '69 but rather a '68. And with parts being enter change-able I just swaped out the center part of the grill was all. I like both '68's and '69's so this way I have both worlds. Or was you asking Joey here that question?
